Can Convection Micro substitute for second Oven?

Help, we have very limited space so are thinking of a stacked micro over the wall oven as I really don't want a micro over the cooktop. Range is out due to some back problems.

I really don't bake a whole lot and am wondering if the convection micro can serve as my second oven instead of going with double wall oven plus microwave.

Finally, if I don't entertain much except for holidays do I skip the warming drawer or do even occasional cooks find them useful???

I had a convection micro that acted as a second oven for many years. I think it all depends on your cooking styles and needs. I found it was good for casseroles, baking rolls or biscuits, bundt cakes (my rectangular pans or muffin pans didn't fit). If you don't often need a second oven and a smaller one will do for the second one, it's probably a good arrangement for you.

The first thing I could give up in my kitchen is the warming drawer. It takes a while to heat up and we haven't been good about remembering to turn it on early enough to use it as much as we thought we would. We also discovered our micro has a keep warm setting, and I've used that sometimes instead -- it doesn't require a warm up period. We're keeping it for now, but since we have a drawer panel on the front of it, if it dies, we may just put a regular drawer there. We'll see what another football/band and holiday season do for us.

Thanks, I have heard that people who don't cook all that often and entertain a lot don't use the warming drawer. I think I can use a convection micro to maybe make brownies for example while I am using my oven. Most likely will not use a second oven all that much. The only thing is that wall ovens are a little smaller (at least in appearance) than a range so would a full size cookie sheet fit? thanks for your time.

I'm not familiar with that specific model but I know sears often put "see instructions with unit" or something on most/all of there online specifications tabs. Then they don't give you access to those manuals, good ol' sears - thanks. For most conv/micros the most important clearance is usually the top and bottom. Think about it all those people with these built in above their oven in a tall cabinet. These things are @ 27" +/- and ovens go in a 27" or 30" cabinet. SO......you'd have zero side clearance or 1.5" max on the sides. They therefore such air in the bottom and exhaust out of the top or vice versa. What does the manual say about top/bottom clearances ??? Does that unit have any vent slots or holes on it's carcass side???

Well I don't know about the advantium, but if I had it to do over again I would not get the Miele speedoven. It is so difficult to clean when I have used it as an oven that it is now just a very expensive microwave. My setup was speedoven, wall oven and warming drawer in a stack. Due to my height or rather lack thereof :) I risk burning my arms when using the speedoven as an oven as well. Mind you I do like the features of the oven but am not using them much for the above reasons. I know that you have purchased a range and so the situation is different, but there are only 2 of us as well and I entertain a fair amount. If I had it to do over I would go with 2 ovens and a regular microwave.

mfrog and pebbles123: I got it from buy.com because I couldn't find one in a retail store anywhere. Their website says you should call the manufacturer if there is a problem other than shipping damage. I just called Panasonic back again and the woman told me that they have quality control and they would not sell a product that has a defect. LOL, right! I made the mistake of telling her that I paid $540 for it and she then told me to go to the Panasonic website and look up the item. It was listed as $699 and backordered so she said mine must have been refurbished or a used model and they couldn't be responsible for it. I told them where I got the oven the first go round and they were OK to service it. Then she had me put in my zipcode and Best Buy came up and she said that was the only authorized dealer she could recommend. Best Buy only had it online too. Unfortunatley I couldn't get the store link to work to check the price while I still had her on the phone but I went to bestbuy.com afterward and it was $599. Hmmm...I thought it couldn't be below $699 if it was legit. I went to the buy.com website to look up their return policy and it says you can return defective product for exchange but it is up to them to decide if it is defective once they receive it. So if they say the door is OK, I'm stuck with shipping there and back. ARGH!!!!

I'm going through a similar decision process. I like having a microwave for basic reheating, melting, etc. But I can't say I'm up for learning the convection microwave option. I don't like the way much microwaved food tastes or cooks--meats in particular, but even other foods can get rubbery. I've heard food things about the speed cookers as a better option, but I think they still utilize microwave technology. I'm considering a CSO with a regular convection oven, and a countertop toaster oven. (I use my current toaster oven as much as my microwave, often with better results.) I still need a microwave so I'm considering a drawer. I'd ideally have a convection microwave, but the only place for me is in my island and I've read it is not recommended to put a convection microwave under the counter. The benefit to the drawer is that you don't have to remove the items to stir and start cooking again--a benefit I overlooked when I started out vehemently hating microwave drawers! (It is now growing on me as an option.) A friend who recently built a house, mounted an over the range microwave at cabinet level over a counter. If you have upper space, that could be an option too. If you are planning to replace your double ovens, and you don't absolutely need a second full oven, you could consider a single oven plus a speed oven.

What size oven are you looking at? The most common wall oven sizes are 30" and 27". Most newer ovens have better insulation and are larger inside than the same size older ones. I've only had one older 27" that I couldn't' use all my cookie sheets in. I have a 30" now and have lots of room.

The best way to know for sure is to take your largest pans, probaly a cookie sheet and a roasting pan, with you when you look at the ovens. You can also research them on line and look for interior measurements. but that may not account for placement of the rack glides and other things that could get in the way. It's best to test themin person.

I had a GE Profile microwave/convection oven and loved it. It was large enough for me to use a medium size rectangular baking dish and it would still turn on the turntable. We are now in a different house and getting ready to do a kitchen remodel. I am definitely considering a microwave/convection combo.
