Help--I got the dreaded green Motherboard Screen

My PC is less than six months old, a 64-bit system running Windows 7. Last night Outlook suddenly had to close, and when I tried to use Photoshop it didn't recognize the card reader I had plugged into a USB port. It was weird--it recognized it w/o the card, but as soon as I inserted the card, the F drive icon disappeared.

I decided to restart the computer, but haven't been able to boot it up since. I get a green screen with the motherboard model number on it. It says to hit Del to get into Setup, and the first two times I tried it nothing happened. But this morning I started it up again, and this time was able to get into Setup. But I don't know what to do from here.

I unplugged everything that was connected to my USB port, BTW.

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

Once in the Safe Mode if you can get that far, Click Start all Programs look for Accessories click it, click System Tools in system tools look for system restore and click it. Try a restore point a few days back.

You don't happen to have BitDefender Anti Virus installed Do you? There is a major issue with BitDenfender Anti Virus and Windows 64 Bit operating Systems.

I "believe" I've had success with a two part attack. I heat my plant water to 50C, and make a mixture that is one part hydrogen peroxide and 3 parts water. For really large pots, I would place the pot in a large enough bowl/saucer to hold water, and add water to the bottom to come up 2 inches, then water from the top with more of the 50C hydrogen peroxide water. Supposedly the bubble action of the peroxide is enough to kill off the larvae near the surface, and the heat of the water does too. I would always find dead whitish larvae on the outside of the bottom of the larger pots from the bottom watering. This has to be done continually, with all plants, over a period of a time. My numbers began to decrease, then all disappeared. Now I see a few back again, but I've been making nursery purchases, and keeping in the house because it is too cool to keep outside (coleus, potato vine, begonias etc). I just keep up with warmer water (now at body temp, and a smaller percentage of hydro peroxide, about 1 part to 4). Apparently, herbs and plants that have scented leaves to not appreciate this treatement, but I have not had one houseplant or outside garden plant die from it. I purchase the 3% mix from the local big box store, cheapest I can find if 1 litre/$2. Nearby reputable nursery purchases the 30% stuff (which would apparently eat the skin of your hand in seconds if applied! Yikes!) and apply a week solution to their plants for part of their bug control method. It bubbles as it sinks through the planting medium, and fluffs it up, sometimes too much, so the soil it puffed up like a muffin or cupcake would when done baking in the oven. So once I feel I've got the #'s of gnats under control, I weaken the mixture (1 to 4 or 5 water), then it doesn't foam up so much. I am now addicted to watering this way, especially the succulents in winter, gives them a drink but doesn't leave them wet for long, soil dries out faster. Summer they all get straight water. I also operate some indoor worm bins, and one know that one for certain is a breeding ground for those pests, so I keep it wrapped in a bedsheet that I change with each feeding. I freeze the sheet with the flies trapped in it to kill them, then shake 'em out on the deck or in the tub (winter) and rinse them away and start over. But in the general area of the house, except for the odd couple I've noticed in the past 3 weeks (due to not being able to say no to taking home bedding plants because it's too cold for them to live long in the Canadian Tire greenhouse here!) I was out taking some pictures this afternoon and got a really bizarre effect when I took a picture of the shed from the opposite direction from the picture I took from the porch yesterday. It was so strange, and not at all what my eyes saw, that I re-scanned the paint stir sticks to include the new door color one, just to be sure that it really was green! Compare the color of the door in this picture of the shed to yesterday's picture: All the stir sticks, including the original door color on the far left and the new door color the next one over. Your eyes (or ours at least!) see the color as it is in yesterday's pictures. I don't know what the camera is seeing!

Your husband may well be able to rebuild this computer. However it would be best to ensure that the issue is with the motherboard and not some other component. What if you buy the board for $100 after being absolutely sure it is the same and all the current components are compatible but the computer still does not work. Returning good parts is not an accepted way with computer stores. The chances of finding a 6 year old motherboard are slim at best, current boards will not accept those older parts probably. Somewhere on that board is a model number and revision number to make the search easier. Most importantly you cannot use your current XP operating system so you need to buy another one, another $100 plus gone and for an operating system 2 steps behind the times. Your current XP is tied to the specific motherboard it was installed on with factory built computers. You will need to ensure you either have all the CDs that came with the computer so that all the drivers are available or that you can find them for free online. The processor will need cleaning once removed and it will require Arctic Silver or equal quality paste to re-seat the heatsink on the processor. This bit is the most difficult or frightening apart from deciding on what parts are compatible. Do the math then take a look at today's computers for pricing. Also if hubby feels good about it check components to self build, it can be a very gratifying experience once all the parts are determined and compatible with each other. You likely will only be able to salvage the hard drive from the existing machine if you build new.

I would raise the drapery rods so that they are about halfway between the top of the window and the crown moulding. You have the transoms and taller doorways, and the windows end up feeling kind of squatty with the drapes hung right at the top of the frame. You can use clip rings if needed for more length. I would turn the rug the other way, parallel to the couch - it looks too small the way it is running now, compared to the width of the couch. Add a floor lamp to the right end of the sofa by the wall, and slide the couch a bit more to the right - it doesn't have to be centered in front of the window, and will give the room the feeling of more walking space move over to the right a bit. Take the tall cabinet and put it on the left side of the console cabinet, to create the feeling of a larger entertainment unit. Take the big plant off the top and add a nice plate on a plate stand up there, perhaps a pair of candlesticks or a smaller ivy plant. Take the single chair and put that on the right side of the cabinet, as extra seating. Add a lamp on the right end of the console by the chair. Something in red, either the lamp or the shade, would be nice to bring some red to that side of the room. The height of the lamp will balance the height of the taller cabinet on the other end, and also provide some warm lighting for the person seated in that chair. Try bringing in the two wing chairs and putting them at a soft right angle to one another down at the right side of the fireplace. A round table and lamp between them would be a good addition. A fabric ottoman that could act as a coffee table and extra seating would be nice in front of the couch. Something narrow and simple in design, or even a pair of the square ottomans in a bright red or rich moss green would work. The mirror is great, but too small. Try to find a large piece of art, or even a pair of framed pieces. The mirror will only really reflect the tv, so not a bit bonus to have a mirror up there. Add some taller candles in holders, perhaps the vase of grasses currently on the hearth. Once you bring the lamps in by the couch and wing chairs, you likely won't need a lot of art on the walls on either side of the fireplace, but wait and see for sure. You have a great start in the space - just need a few things to pull it together.

Thanks, Zep! I was able to do the System Restore. Although my screen looks fine, and Outlook appears to work, I was unable to open Firefox. I don't know what else might be malfunctioning.

Nope, I don't have BitDefender installed.

I appreciate your help.

What happens when you try to open Firefox? It just does not open, any errors?

Right click the Firefox Icon and run as administrator, try that.

Or open from a different location besides the Icon on the desktop, try the Firefox Icon in the Start All Programs Menu.

No error messages, just nothing. Wouldn't do anything as administrator. In All Programs I had two options, Firefox or Firefox Safe Mode. Neither worked.

I'm going to try opening Photoshop and Excel, two other programs I use a lot.

Ok let me know if they open, something got corrupted maybe. Plugging in and removing usb device can cause that at times.

If those programs open good. We can try reinstalling firefox.

(I had to run out for an appointment.)

I didn't try to use Photoshop, but it opened fine. Ditto Excel and Word.

Shall I try reinstalling Firefox?

Run System File checker to look for any corrupt files. You need to run as administrator.
Click Start
click All programs
click Accessories
RIGHT click on Command Prompt
click to run as administrator

In the Run box type sfc /scannow and click OK. Note the space after sfc and there are 2 'n's in there.

This might take some time to complete and it is possible you may be asked for the Windows 7 DVD (not sure with Win7)

You should also click Start, click Control panel, click "Review your computer's status" hitting the small down arrow beside Security to see if all is OK there.

I forgot to mention that while you are reviewing your computer status Windows 7 has a small Troubleshooting icon at the bottom of that page to find and fix problems, you might give that a whirl as well.

Okay, I ran the scan and received the following message:

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

That was reassuring.

I have to leave for work, but will check out the Troubleshooting icon later.
