Internet Explorer Hanging

Hi,

On one computer, I have CCleaner and a little app. called Tempfree. Between the two of them, I can usually get Internet Explorer running quickly again. On another computer, I don't have Tempfree, its apparently not being available anymore, and that computer hangs frustratingly often. I have run AVG and Spybot to no avail. Would anyone know what I might try?

This is probably not your problem but just in case I will mention it. My IE was hanging up for awhile and a tech told me to unhook my Linksys router. When I did the problem went away.

unplugging the router and letting it restart will often fix problems like that if they are related to the actual connection.

there are so many reasons a browser can hang. but you did not tell us which version of IE you are using and that could make a difference is it 7 or 8?
Go into your settings and set it to run with out any of the addons active so you can see if it could be one of the add ons causing the problem.

getting a second browser is of course something you should do if you do not have one on the pc, it is always best to have a backup should one fail. Getting firefox and trying it would let you know if it is just a browser problem or if it is coming from your connection or elsewhere, does it happen on both or just IE, helps narrow it down.

I just answered the question as it was asked, which as stated seemed to have nothing to do with either IE 11 or Outlook mail. Don't know what other kind of answer you were hoping to get. "Shutting down" the computer certainly means that no virus/malware can get in or out...so your computer is safe. That's what you asked.

I sometimes get that message when I have a loose connection, either with my cable modem or the Linksys router. It will clear after checking the connections and/or pushing the reset button. Just my 2 c's. Bejay

The setting is in IE version 10 & 11. Mine is version 10. By its default setting, the Enable Protected Mode should have already set. To check, open IE. Under "Tools" (top menu), select "Internet options". Under the "Security" tab, you will see "Enable Protected Mode". This should be checked. You can also disable the Flash Plugins. This bug won't work with Flash plugins disabled. To disable, open IE and go to "Tools" and select "Manage add-ons". Under "Toolbars and Extensions", you will see to the right "Adobe Systems Incorporated". Under this, "Shockwave Flash Object" is listed. When you select this, you will see a "disable" at the bottom. Click on it to disable; then, select "Close" to get out of the setting. Doing both, you can continue to use IE.

When installing Norton as a Comcast customer, the download is from Norton. I was a Norton Customer before becoming a Comcast customer and other than a bit of brand signage, the Norton Suite doesn't appear to have different versions. There's no need for any third party uninstaller program - if you look on your program menu under Norton Security Suite, one of the choices is Norton Uninstall. I can tell you from my own experience that that utility works very comprehensively. I once had a corrupted file that required an uninstall - reinstall that wasn't working for me, and Norton Tech Support used that tool on a remote connection. OP, I'm glad everything is working for you again.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have (had) IE8. It's now back to 7 because, after disabling all add-ons and trying to check IE8 for problems at Microsoft, I uninstalled it, downloaded it again and deleted it again. The problem continues even in IE7, so I have a tech looking at it. Enough time spent. I hope he can resolve the problem.
