I've got an e-mail into Microsoft Support....I'm not sure how to buy pass it so that the shield doesn't come up each morning. Yesterday, it was there along with a Windows Defender update. I updated Defender and the shield went away...but, it was back this morning. I've installed it from the shield and also at the Microsoft site and it says in both places that the install was successful.

could you go to the windows update site itself and copy and paste the info on the exact update it is trying to install and having problems with please so we know what one we are dealing with.

also anytime an update has problems on your pc microsoft does provided free phone help for updates.

I've installed this update multiple times and it says it was a successful install...

Then I went to start, all programs, updates and installed it from that point....again a successful install

Then, I went to the Microsoft site that was mentioned in the previous thread and installed it there...again was successful, but still getting the notification.

ok good thanks for that clarification now we know we are on the right track and that is a needed update since it deals with the auto run issue.

Most of the others that were having the problem you were having after trying multiple times it finally quit popping up the shield. Seeing the answer microsoft gives would be a good idea. I personally have no idea why it is doing that, there are now about 4 people reporting the same thing happening to them over on BBR forum, you can go back to the windows update page and block that update so it does not show up anymore if it is showing as installed. It seems very random as to who it is happening to.

The first time or two (maybe 3?)I installed it it showed up as installed in the MS Updates but wasn't in add/remove. Reason I checked was the update notice kept coming back. The last time I tried, no notice came back and it shows up in both places.

Sorry, forgot to mention I did this over a period of over a week. I kept going back to that other post hoping to find an answer and tried just one more time before asking a question almost identical to yours.

I had the same issue with my shield popping up and saying that I had an install and I couldn't get rid of mine either. It was a security update but not the same KB number that you have,mine was KB954430 but still it acted the same way as what you are experiencing. It is a microsoft update problem, I blamed it on my Kodak easyshare software because the shield seemed to pop up after I tried to run my easyshare program. I have since run my easyshare software again and this time it didn't pop up, so it had to be Microsoft.

ravencajun is right, Microsoft does offer free phone help on their windows or Microsoft updates.

After trying everything I could to resolve this problem on my own I finally decided to call Microsoft. It took me three phone calls, one to Malasha one to India and one to the phillipines. They had to take control over my computer and they all were very nice and gave me step by step instructions on what they needed me to do and they also explained what they were doing while they were trying to fix the problem. The one in the phillipines finally got it right. They keep a record of what they have done, so that if another Microsoft tech needs that information they have it available to them. If I didn't understand what was said to me I was very polite and asked them to repeat it and they would kindly do so. I had no problems with them.

If you are still having an issue here is the phone number that I called. It is free.

So that you will know there is an extra number. We normally will have Example: 1-866-727-2338. But they have added an extra number. Just dial the 1-866-727-23389 and you will get through. I don't know why an extra number is added unless it is because it is overseas.

You can find their phone number from Windows Update, just look for the one that you are having problems with and their is a phone number available there. That is where I got this phone number from. They probably have the same number though. I find it strange that so many of us are having this problem even if they are not the same KB numbers. I still think it is Microsofts problem and they have to fix it. They really knew where they were going and what to look for. They give you a code and instuctions where to go and what to type in and then you have to give them permission to access your computer. Once you log off with them they can't access your computer again unless you give them permission again.

Well, the good news is that I got the number right when I e-mailed Microsoft. The bad news is that I got the little shield popup again this morning.

The updates shows as installed everywhere I look on my computer.

They were to contact me within 24 hours and they did...but, they said they would contact me again in another 24.

Thank you so much thirdfrt for the phone numbers....I imagine that is going to be the route i have to take. I think I'll wait for the second e-mail this evening and see what they say. My eyes are better in the evening....I couldn't even begin to do it this morning.

Okay...I got my "help" e-mail from Microsoft this morning. Apparently they feel that those of us having problems are the ones with XP Pro. But...I need to wait until my eyes are better later in the day to continue with this farther. Are you all interesting in "the rest of the story" or not?

Maybee I have been emailing one of my friends with Microsoft about this and he said that MS is aware of it and is working on why it is happening and he would let me know if and when there was anything you can do (like a patch) however he said they are recommending that if it is showing as installed in your add remove programs and at the windows update site in your history then go back to the windows update and mark that update to be hidden so that it does not continue to pop up wanting to be installed again.
If I hear any thing I will post back.

Well, I started in on the e-mailed instructions this afternoon. It was 70 here, and much to nice to stay inside, but the instructions looked step by step and I thought I could just breeze right through them.....NOT! I got to No. 4 in Step 3 and that folder he says to go to wasn't the one that he had me put there...and I knew nothing about getting a shell32.dll....So...I did a system restore and will try calling Microsoft tomorrow. I'm so "stoopid" that I was trying to type the information in Step 1 Number 2....then duhhhhhh, I figured out that I should copy/paste it in order to get it right...the same with everything else he told me. But...the folder that ended up in C/ wasn't the one he mentions in Step 3....

The most common cause for this issue is some files are not replaced successfully while installing updates. In Windows XP Professional Edition, it can also be caused by incorrect permission. I suggest we refer the following steps to test the issue.

Before moving on, please let me know if the operating system is Windows XP Professional, if so, let us reset permission first. If not, please go to step 2 directly.

Step 1: Reset Permission

1. Click "Start" and click "Run".

2. In the Open box, type "secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose" (without quotation marks) and press Enter.

3. Please do not close the Dos Window, it will be closed automatically when the task finishes.

Step 2: Download and install KB967715

1. Please download KB967715 by the clicking this direct link:

2. Save it to the Hard Disk C (C:\).

3. Please double click the installation file under Disk C to install the update again.

After this, let's restart the machine and then try to visit the Windows Update site again to check if the Update KB967715 is still listed. If the issue persists, let's refer to the next step.

Step 3: Replace original files

=======================

Note: I assume that you have saved the WindowsXP-KB967715-x86-ENU.exe file to C:\.

1. Click "Start" and click "Run".

2. In the Open box, type "C:\WindowsXP-KB967715-x86-ENU.exe /X" (without quotation marks) and press Enter.

3. Type: C:\KB967715 in the "Choose Directory For Extracted Files" box.

4. Please go to the "C:\ KB967715\SP3GDR" folder.

5. In the open folder, please copy shell32.dll in it from C:\KB967715\SP3GDR to the following two folders to replace the original files.

C:\WINDOWS\system32

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

6. Click "Start"->"Run", type: C:\WindowsXP-KB967715-x86-ENU.exe and then press "Enter" to install the Update KB967715 again.

Note: I assume your system is installed on the C: drive. If it is installed on another drive, please modify the above location accordingly.

After we have finished the above steps, please restart the computer and try to update Windows again. If we still encounter an issue after performing the above steps, please help me collect the installation log for further troubleshooting:

Collect KB967715.log

2. Locate a file named " KB967715.log".

3. Please send it as an attachment to: v-30jzhe@mssupport.microsoft.com.

So that you will know I have Windows XPSP3 Home edition and I still had the same problem although like I said before it was a different KB number. I also want you to know that I called Microsoft at 9PM, 11PM and 1AM and got them everytime, with that phone number that I gave you. When I called the first time I got Melasha the second time India and finally the Phillipines. In Melasha I asked the guy what time it was there and he said that it was 9AM. So it was morning there while it was night here. Ha!

I hope they are aware of the fact that this is not just happening to Windows XP-Pro, it is also happening with Windows XP Home Edition. I told them when I called them that I had the Home edition when they asked me. I wanted to post this so that you all would know that this problem is happening to the Home Edition as well as to XP-Pro. I know that there is a difference between the two OS (not sure what that is) but both had the same problems with the shield popping up and showing that it had been installed on the computer and then the shield popping up again with the same install showing up again. Different KB's but the same kind of problem with the shield etc. I am just curious how many OS were affected by their updates.

Well, yesterday, I was just tired of working with the thing. I figured I would just start in again today. So...this morning when I turned on my computer, the little shield didn't come up. I don't know if my problem is solved or not....I'm afraid to go and look at the update site it that update is still there :o) But..I didn't get the shield this morning when I turned on....that "has" to be a plus...right?

*sigh* the update is still there...so I guess it will be the telephone to Microsoft today....

I am running Windows XP Media Edition, and I have been having the same problem. Add/Remove says that KB967715 was installed on 2/26, but I keep getting the notification and have "installed" it over and over, but as of today, I am still getting those notifications. When I get some time, I think I'll call that Microsoft number.

Or would it be safe to just keep ignoring the notices, infuriating though they are, since I do have the update in my computer protecting it?

just go to the windows update site choose custom let it scan your pc then when it shows that update choose to hide that update, then it will not notify you any more.
Start> all programs> at top windows update

I had my computer in the shop for another reason and asked the tech if he would install that update for me. He said, "Yes, no problem." I went to pick up my computer and asked him if he had installed it and he said yes. I asked him "how" he had done it and he said he just downloaded it and installed it. I told him "I" had done that but it would just come back. He said, "It didn't come back." I said, "Are you sure."....."Yes", says he. So..I ask him if he will check it out for sure before I cart the thing home. He gives a loud *sigh* and says he will show me, but that he installed it. So...he hooks it up...turns it on...goes to updates and says, "It's back...." I told him that that is what I was telling him in the first place. I told him I had an e-mail from a Microsoft tech about it but I only got so far and couldn't figure out all he was saying to do. He said, "If I had those instructions, I would do it for you." I told him he "did" have the instructions, all we had to do was open my e-mail folder. So...he does that and opens Jo jo's (tech from God knows where) instructions and starts in...finally he gives it up and says he'll show me how to hide the thing and not to worry about it........so that is sort of the end of the story...it is hidden and I never succeeded in getting it installed, and I'm not going to read any more instructions about it :o) Another tech with the last name of Wang, who said he was Jo jo's supervisor gave me more instructions...but, hey...if it's that hard the heck with it...I'll die and go to my grave without having ever gotten the thing installed...I've come to grips with that knowledge and have accepted it :o) Thank you all for your help and concern....

One more thing...I think Jo jo's instructions caused me to have to take my puter to the shop in the first place :o)

Thank you....I "could" go ahead and call Microsoft, but I think I am just going to let it go....my computer is working very well, and I don't see that update. This is the first update (including SP3) that I couldn't master, but that's the way it goes, I guess. It is hidden and can just set there. I would think they could do a better job with some of this stuff, but I know it's complicated....
