20 year old KA Dishwasher
Comments (15)I also agree that you should keep your old dishwasher. I have not been happy with the new ones at all, and in fact had my husband remove our less than one year old one, and put the matching cabinetry we had made and put in it's place. It has been a bit of a mental adjustment to go back to hand washing dishes after all the years of being spoiled with a dishwasher, but I have a routine now and am fine with my decision. While building our home we bought a single wide to live in during the process. We put a top end Frigidaire dishwasher in, soon swapped it out for a top end Kitchenaid. Much to my surprise none cleaned very well. We moved into our new house a year ago and installed a dishwasher that had great ratings, also a Kitchenaid, and it has been mediocre as well. It was used at least once a day, sometimes twice a day as I cook everything from scratch. In addition, we had 3 control panels replaced, as well as the upper basket roller system that broke within 3 months. The repair man said that was how all of them have been, no matter what brand. I was aggravated with having to rewash many things, the extremely long wash cycles, and the smell that it developed unless cleaned all the time with a special dishwasher cleaner. In the end, I felt the thing caused more work and time than simply washing the dishes and putting them away. Part of the problem lies with the poor dishwasher detergents that we are now forced to use. I've tried them all. The other issues are that they simply do not use enough water to properly get the job done. I noticed the new manuals for Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kitchenaid state that Afresh must be used on a regular basis, and that rinse aids HAD to be used. Well, the perfumed Afresh is just plain gross, and I don't want rinse aid residue on items I eat from. The owner of a large appliance dealership warned us.......he said he hates to sell dishwashers these days. Most women will defend to the death having a dishwasher. My mother in law would never be without one, yet her glasses and silverware are filmy looking, and we found them gross on Thanksgiving. She thinks they are fine. Other people leave the water running while they "clean" the dishes before loading them. Then they load and unload a batch that would have only taken minutes to do by hand in the first place. Don't get me wrong....I hate washing dishes. On the other hand, I also hated unloading the dishwasher. I then realized that for me dishes are no fun no matter what, and is one of those life chores that has to be dealt with. What I hated most of all though were dishes that had to be rewashed. No, I will not lower my cleanliness standards. How ridiculous. The last great dishwasher I had was a Maytag that we bought in 1997. Prior to that we had excellent Kitchenaids....See MoreCan't decide between Bosch and KA Dishwasher
Comments (15)Besides what everybody else has already said, here are a couple of other thoughts. Consumer Reports testing lists the Bosch SHX555 as having "excellent" ratings for washing and energy use, and "very good" ratings for noise and what CR thinks is "ease of use." There are ratings for KichenAid KUDS30 models, but no KUDS35 models. It may well be that the only difference between the "30" and "35" models is which retailers sell them. Anyway, the KUDS30 models were rated as excellent for washing, very good for energy use, average for noice, and very good for ease of use. CR lists the Bosch as having a 110 minute cycle time and the KA KUDS30 models as having a 115 minute cycle time. My Bosch SHE55 was similarly rated by CR but, in practice, usually runs about 100 minutes. (Both the KA and Bosch seem to have sensors that adjust cycle time for water turbidity, so YMMV). My SHE55 model, which I've had for 8 months, has racks that are designed differently that the ones on the Bosch I had for the previous fifteen years. The racks in the SHE55 (and, I believe in the SHX55) models have a different layout from the old Bosch, although they also have adjustable height and rows of tines that can fold down. Not everybody likes this layout. It took me some time adjust I saved the racks from my old Bosch and, once in a while, I sometimes swap in the old bottom rack for a particular load. IIRC, the current KA models use a more standard rack design, albeit with some flexibility. So, one thing I would suggest for the OP is, if you are still stuck in the making your decision, go back to the store with some of your plates and glasses to see how yours will fit. One final thing. There is a strident debate about the safety of some Whirlpool dishwasher products, which includes it's KitchenAid models. There are reports of a small number of them suffering circuit board burn-outs with some those even catching fire. Apparently, there have been several housefires attributed to the DWs. Whirlpool has denied any product defects, while numbers of enraged owners are lobbying the CPSC and blogging, and newspapers have been publishing some stories. Do a web search using "kitchenaid + dishwasher + fire" for more info on this debate. Also try substituting "whirlpool" for "kitchenaid." There were a couple threads here at GW on the subject last summer and fall, as well. I remember one of them was about whether to let your dishwasher run when you are sleeping or going out for the day. Comments (9)What dishwasher does not get "mixed" reviews? What dishwasher brand does not have at least a few "I will never get an appliance from THAT brand again" reviews? Most negative reviews for Miele center around people that are comparing them to old top of the line dishwashers that were not energy or water efficient. And they complain about wash times. Or people that used phosphate based detergent then unknowingly started buying new phosphate free formulas and thought something was wrong with their dishwasher. And bought a new Miele and did not notice an improvement. And are mad about. But that has nothing to do with Miele. And a few had install problems and a few got a Miele Lemon. It happens to all appliance companies. If you have consistently soft water you should consider Asko, Bosch or Miele Classic. I think they all clean equally well in this situation but Miele has better long term durability. If you have hard water that has a consistent hardness level you should consider Bosch 800 Plus that has a manually operated water softener. But if like most Americans you have hard water that varies in water hardness you should strongly consider a Miele Crystal or higher that have automatic water softeners. The Bosch softener you adjust for water hardness level while the Miele continually adjust as the water hardness level changes. This really gives better results. The benefit to Dimension Plus with Q4 sound rating and Diamond is that they have auto open door that helps in drying by letting steam out at end of cycle. The Diamond also has auto close as well, the LED lighting, standard 5 year warranty with 24 hour monitoring by Miele HQ via wifi. BTW I love the cutlery tray. It saves more time during unloading that it cost during loading. Plus cutlery gets cleaned better. You can buy a Miele basket and use it instead if you really want to....See MoreNew KA Dishwasher with UltraFine filter module
Comments (7)One of the reasons I don't give too much weight to these "professional" reviews is they ooh and ahh over gimmicks without any regard to reliability and build quality. Now, I like technology, I'm not want one of those people who wants appliances to be exactly like they were 50 years ago. I think there are some new features that really make appliances do their job better. But some stuff... Not so much. The Kenmore dishwasher that was rated #1 before they tested this KA had a motorized spray arm. I remember Consumer Reports being all obsessed with how it could reverse if it got blocked. What if it breaks, you won't get clean dishes then! Here's a better idea: load your dishwasher so that the wash arms can turn freely. Consumer Reports has the tendency of rating different models with exactly the same wash system completely differently. They treat Kenmore like it actually makes things. The one thing I did like to see is that the Miele Dimension was rated "excellent" in their latest testing round. I remember a while back they thought a Miele model was one of the worst. I bet you any money they have the same wash arm, pump, everything. LOL!...See Morelmrinc_gw
