Mixing Hardware Finishes

I understand this is acceptable. Seems alien to me but I'm good with it if "everybody else is doing it" (g) But, surely there is some kind of pattern. For example, my faucets are brushed nickel. I'd like me vanity hardware to be in the bronze family (vanity will be stained/glazed dark). So I asked a sales girl in a local specialty store that sells door hardware, bath accessories, knobs, etc, what she thought was a good rule of thumb. She said if my faucets were brushed nickel, she'd do lighting the same color and do cabinetry hardware and door handles in the bronze....bronze on the lower half of the bath and brushed nickel faucet and above. Sounds reasonable. What do you think? Floors and walls will be a light travertine color, vanity top is Giallo Ornamental (lighter than Santa Cecelia) and accent color is "sea tones" (blue, aqua and champagne) glass tiles.
