Is there any way you can get streaming video (movies) on your TV without using your laptop as a modem (or whatever it does)??

Suddenly, in our house, my husband and son discovered streaming movies and my netbook is used for this task. Isn't there something else you can buy to do the same thing?

Yes, you can use a variety of Internet-enabled devices. There are several threads in this forum on this subject. Just do a search on the term: Netflix

I guess this is beyond me. I don't want to rent something from Netflix, adding to the monthly charge. I do not want to use a cell phone.

Thought there might be something available in Radio Shack or Best Buy that would allow the streaming without tying up a laptop.

That looks good for detailed info on popular sites. I have also found the site "downforeveryoneorjustme" useful when I try to visit an unfamiliar site (or any site for that matter) and nothing comes up. It lets you figure out whether it's your browser/computer or a wider problem that is out of your control, and it can be used with any web site by simply entering the web address. No cable and no subscriptions for us, other than Amazon Prime, which we get because we already have Prime. In our living rooms, we have Samsung TVs and get Samsung channels in addition to the hundreds of local channels (of which we only watch about 40) we get through the air via antenna. I am not averse to turning the TV on during the day, and there are certain afternoon shows that I like to watch from time to time, including Selling Houses with Amanda Lamb on DABL (I think). I think Amanda Lamb is an extremely obnoxious person and a horrible designer, but I like to watch her because she is so bad. I love it when her clients refuse to take her bad advice (generally regarding hideous wallpaper that she tries to force on them) and feel sorry for them when they allow her to steamroll over them. I used to watch CBS This Morning years ago, but it's really gone downhill - ever since they booted Charlie Rose, and now I can only stand to watch the first 20 minutes of it - after that it is a lot of fluff and way too much time wasted on commercials. On occasion, I will watch Perry Mason at 9 AM while I am waiting for the effects of my morning BP medication to mellow out. I would love to watch German and Italian shows, but we don't get any of those. I probably watch Youtube more than I do TV. In the afternoon, we often watch To Tell The Truth at 5 PM with Gary Moore as host, and Kitty Carlyle and Peggy Cass as permanent panel members. Unfortunately, the panel usually also includes Bill Cullen, who is extremely incompetent at asking questions of the guests. On weeknights, Just Shoot Me reruns come on after TTTT, and we usually watch that also. I can sort of watch these shows while I am making dinner. We get quite a few British "Home" shows on Samsung channels, and I watch some of those in the evening. Sometimes we watch Dateline or Unsolved Mysteries in the evening, but we generally do not watch movies except on weekends.

We watched that a while back. At first I liked it, then I found it repetitive and stupid which hurt my heart because I love both Keanu and Wynona. At that point I was invested, wanted to see if it would turn around again and how it ended. Sadly it did not get better.

You don't rent the device from Netflix. Netflix sells the "Roku" streaming device for $59.00.

Several gaming devices are Netflix ready. We us Wii. The link above to Instantly watch TV shows & movies on lots of different devices. I believe there are some more since that page was constructed.

The whole topic of streaming Netflix could support a forum of it's own but such forums never seem to gather enough steam to keep moving. You can sometimes find answers to specific questions at Need Help with your Instant Watching System?. The people at the General Discussions forum at Streightdope.com often have good answers to Netflix questions. [Someone here once scolded me for mentioning streightdope. I am not sure why.] Searching Gardenweb's Electronics Forum for Netflix I find 10 threads but I did not examine them for quality.

Did you look at the link I provided? It shows all the devices you can use. Since you titled the post "Netflix," my assumption is that you already have a Netflix account. If you do, it costs nothing to stream the movies. You can watch as many as you want for free as part of your Netflix membership. You just need one of the streaming devices I linked you to. So, do you have an account or not?

We also use a Wii and it works great. The Netflix folks are super about talking you through setup, etc.
