The island hood most likely won't have a flat side to lie flush up against the wall although I suppose you might be able to mount it like a chimney hood. Personally, I'd get an inexpensive island hood now (if such a thing exists) and then get the wall hood when you remodel.

Small "island" hoods are often used against walls. They're chimney hoods, and usually the wall behind is completely tiled. As Weissman said, they're not flat on the back.

Problem is that to be a good island hood, over an open space, it should really be deeper front to back. There's no backsplash stopping the effluent to the back. Usually, for a 24--26" deep range they recommend at least a 30" deep hood, I think.

That said, a slightly narrow hood would be a lot better than nothing. :) And if I remember right, your cooking surface isn't massive. I can't remember what style you cook, but you can also make sure to put the greasiest, smelliest, fume-iest stuff right under the fan. :)

Alternative, see if the Habitat store has anything good, Craig's List, etc., knowing that you're eventually going to remodel and give it back to them...

Thanks y'all. I guess if it's not too big (and I've been looking at ones with flat backs and sides) it should be okay. I'd go for a cheapie but it might be a while before I bother with the remodel (especially if I fill in the things I think I'm missing and get comfortable) so I'd rather get something decent. On the other hand, I COULD get a cheap island hood and a good wall mount hood for the price of a GOOD island hood.

Since I'm stuck with a range in my current configuration I might as well have a good enough hood to broil fish, right?

But remember that a lot of the GOOD in the price is for the surround. You could get a really bang up insert and a plain box. :)

It would be easier and cheaper to buy your good quality wall hood now, and then create a custom wall the exact size and shape of the hood for the flat wall for it to back up against. You could cover it with stainless steel on the wall side, or glass tile, or any number of decorative surfaces. It won't be ideal in the pretty, but it will give you decent quality ventilation now and let you reuse the vent against the wall later when you do your reno. Obviously, one of the 24"-27" deep hoods would work best as an island hood "kludge" and give you better coverage against the wall later.

Ahh GreenD! If it were that easy I'd wall in that whole darn peninsuleg! (No place for the TV in the next room, for one thing.)

But you do have me thinking of something better than a shoji screen...can I assemble a glass block wall on a tile counter? That's a question for another forum but the massive island hoods I'd need look wrong here and the flitty glassy ones don't fit into future cabinets (and they'd have to be too large to be freestanding in a future kitchen--house too small for that!).

I just renovated my kitchen but I install the island rang hood as wall mounted rang hood I don't know that how look like at begging I didn't think to not install but now I am not happy can you please tell me that if I can keep the range hood or I have remove and buy another wall mounted rangehood. I attached the picture as well. Please guide me
