We just went through that -- and chose porcelain. We used our extra pennies on the granite. We just wanted easy upkeep and we're not 100% sure we will be forever, so... : )

Thank you Susan. Did you get a travertine lookalike? If so, would you mind telling me which one? Do you have pictures on line? A designer showed me one a few weeks ago and it really looked good.

You already have quite a lot of travertine, and are having doubts whether you want more...

Why not spend an afternoon [or two] exploring the tile outlets in your area so that you really understand what your options are?

Our tile is Mohawk Borghesi, in Noce. We have the 13 x 13's on the floor and the 10 x 13's on the wall, also the universal decorative border inset running through the tub surround. I think it looks nice...especially with the niche (now that I know what it's called!).

What I was looking for was slip resistance, first off. And I really wanted tile that had both tan and taupe shades in it, and I got that. Good luck, whatever you choose will be beautiful!

I have travertine in my entry and around the fireplace. I love it but I have had it long enough that I know it does not clean as easily as porcelain That bathroom in the ad looks like my bathroom. I got the porcelain with the same look, tub, etc., in the picture and it really looks good. P.S. Monica, I have MS too, another reason for the porcelain. I also got ceramic/porcelain slate as opposed to real slate in another bath since I was told by some experts that "real slate" chips much more easily. The ceramic/porcelain slate was not cheap either but it looks great for someone considering slate or ceramic/porcelain.

I think in your mind you think that porcelain tile is somehow "settling" when what you want is natural stone. I don't think you should look at it that way. I think you should look at it as you have the choice between two beautiful materials, both with slightly different properties, and you need to weigh the pros and cons of each in order to make your choice. It would seem to me if you can get the look you adore with much less maintenance in probably the highest wear area of your house and in a bullet-proof product, it's a no brainer. I would pick the porcelain.

THANK YOU ALL! I'm back in the porcelain mode again (till I see another travertine bathroom LOL) Seriously, kgwlisa is right. I feel I'd be settling and this is the bathroom that will be lasting the rest of my life. It really IS a no brainer tho and I need to do what I know is going to be best for my situation in the long run and just get over myself! (g)

Yes they are! ; ) Of course we've only been using the bathroom for a few weeks so everything is still new, but it seems to be easy care. Thanks Monica and good luck with your project!

I really wanted travertine but was talked out of it by my installer, who implied it would not be very durable especially in my steam shower. I compromised and had the travertine I loved put in around my MB fireplace, and used porcelain for the bath. I had a hard time finding a travertine-look porcelain that didn't appear printed/pixilated. As it turned out, my porcelain had some variation but not as much as I'd hoped, and the installer didn't do a very good job randomly turning the tiles as he installed, so in a number of areas there are identical tiles right next to each other.

annkathryn, your tile looks great on my monitor. I'm sorry you're not 100% pleased with it. I remember when we did our travertine backsplash, DH had me stack the all the tiles by taking one tile out of each box so they'd be good and shuffled.

Susan, hope you'll be posting pictures soon! I really like the look of some of those Mohawk tiles and can't wait to see yours installed. I'm going tile shoping on Monday. Designer that DH does work for has shown me a Marazzi tile but I'd like to compare them. I'm thinking the Mohawk might look better.
