Here is my 2009 Christmas Gingerbread "Barn". I make a gingerbread house every year. I thought I would share my 2009 Barn with you.

How cute is that? VERY! I love the snow on the barn, it looks so real. I have never been brave enough to try a gingerbread house.

Lucky you... I WISH I had your problems! =) Seriously though... I dug up most of my backyard to make garden space, so I dealt with the existing-grass issue. I pretty much tried to rake/clear whatever would come up easily and piled it in a big heap which became my compost heap over the winter (mixed in kitchen scraps and such as I had them). For the remaining grass, I just built my raised beds on top of it. I spread newspaper over it, then topped it off with dirt (well, peatmoss and topsoil, with compost to be added in spring). It has seemed to work ok... the newspaper smothered the grass, and since it stayed buried under damp soil, it has been breaking down pretty quick. You may not have really deep beds your first year, but it's a nice way to get going without being overwhelmed! Lori

Here's my list as it currently stands. The first three rounds are growing. Round 4, which is fall tomatoes, is usually put into the ground in late June or early July from a late May or early June sowing. Because last year's drought continues to plague us, I cut way, way, way back. I was trying to limit Rounds 1 thru 3 to a total of 40 varieties, but I didn't succeed. : ) ROUND 1: These are my "must haves" for this year. They were started in February for planting out the last week of March or the first week of April. Might start putting them in the ground this weekend, depending on the forecast. These 4 are from purchased plants I found at a local store in Feb. and planted in containers. On any given day during the harvest season, if you walk into my house, you're likely to smell the delicious aroma of dehydrating tomatoes coming from the kitchen. We don't grow any oxhearts here because they produce very, very few fruit per plant in our hot climate. And, in case anyone is wondering, we grow all these tomatoes for us and, no, we don't sell any, although we often give them away to family and friends. I had added a link to utube and a video of Ricky Nelson singing Garden Party to my blog post, but it won't let me do that here. So, just remember that wonderful song as you view. Click on the video and enjoy Ricky Nelson as he welcomes us to The Garden Party. We love fresh vegetables and fortunately live in an area where they are plentiful throughout the summer months. I even have a perfect set of dishes with a vegetable theme, but I used those last week for Tablescape Thursday. So, I went digging through my stash of dishes looking for something for a Garden Party. I almost went with some china and an elegant theme. However, the weather has cooled somewhat and the late evening hours we are able to enjoy the outdoors for dining. So, I went for a more practical garden meal on the screened porch. I decided that these plates with a birdhouse would work for the party this weekend. I tried to snag photos of the birds in the backyard, but since I was looking for them, they didn't show up. I have a male cardinal (red)and an occasional white female that visits my back yard area . I just love to watch them as they flitter from branch to branch. There is also a mockingbird that returns every year to make a nest in the spring. She is very territorial and has chased my husband up under the covered porch on several occasions when he was working under the tree that held her nest. We also have a couple of small rabbits that frequent the yard and many, many squirrels. All of them have been missing since I have manned the porch with a camera. However, I decided that this rugged looking little birdhouse was an appropriate centerpiece for my Garden Party table for the evening. I used round beaded placemats as chargers. I found these at a Salvation Army TS after Christmas for 99 cents each. They were new and still had the tags from Horchow! I couldn't believe the price. I used a set of dark green handled flatware on top of red napkins and a red tablecloth. Glassware used includes four amber wine goblets that I found recently for half price at a thrift store. They ended up being only 75 cents each that day. The other glasses were found last week at GW for $1 each and are green Coke looking glass. I love the shape and size of them for iced tea. The menu for the evening was peel and eat shrimp that was cooked with Old Bay Seasoning served with cocktail sauce, Hoppin' John and a loaded baked potato. Iced tea and an assortment of white wine was served. A Merlot was out for DH after meal time. He prefers the Merlots and enjoys them with most foods or as an after dinner drink. This particular Cap Rock chardonnay is a Texas wine that I enjoy. I always have to laugh at the piles of shrimp peelings that are left behind and tell their own story. Dessert for the evening was homemade vanilla ice cream. I made this last weekend for one of the ice cream socials and froze several big bowls of it. Since it is not as hot this weekend and we are actually able to enjoy eating outside, the ice cream was a nice treat. However, I scooped it into the bowls and placed it inside the freezer for a few minutes before serving. If you aren't from the South, you might not be familiar with Hoppin' John, so I looked up a little info for you. Hoppin' John History Eat poor that day, eat rich the rest of the year. Rice for riches and peas for peace. - Southern saying on eating a dish of Hoppin' John on New Year's Day. Hoppin' John is found in most states of the South, but it is mainly associated with the Carolinas. Gullah or Low Country cuisine reflects the cooking of the Carolinas, especially the Sea islands (a cluster of islands stretching along the coats of south Carolina and northern Georgia). Black-eyed peas, also called cow peas, are thought to have been introduced to America by African slaves who worked the rice plantations. Hoppin' John is a rich bean dish made of black-eyed peas simmered with spicy sausages, ham hocks, or fat pork, rice, and tomato sauce. This African-American dish is traditionally a high point of New Year's Day, when a shiny dime is often buried among the black-eyed peas before serving. whoever get the coin in his or her portion is assured good luck throughout the year. For maximum good luck in the new year, the first thing that should be eaten on New year's Day is Hoppin' John. At the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, many southern families toast each other with Champagne and a bowl of Hoppin' John. If it is served with collard greens you might, or might not, get rich during the coming year. There are many variations to traditional Hoppin' John. Some cook the peas and rice in one pot, while others insist on simmering them separately. Most food historians generally agree that "Hopping John" is an American dish with African/French/Caribbean roots. There are many tales or legends that explain how Hoppin' John got its name: * It was the custom for children to gather in the dining room as the dish was brought forth and h op around the table before sitting down to eat. * A man named John came "a-hoppin" when his wife took the dish from the stove. * An obscure South Carolina custom was inviting a guest to eat by saying, "Hop in, John" * The dish goes back at least as far as 1841, when, according to tradition, it was hawked in the streets of Charleston, South Carolina by a crippled black man who was know as Hoppin' John. Although not from the Carolina's, a variation of this dish is a favorite of mine. However, I use jalapeno peppers in it. These pepper are one thing that I do have growing in a small garden tub. We eat lots of these peppers. I cooked fresh black eyed peas and used fresh tomatoes and our own jalapeno peppers. I also usually leave the rice out, so in some circles it wouldn't really be Hoppin' John!

That is so cute, love it! How good are you at these things, here is my story!!!

Syble, my DH bought two Gingerbread house kits a few years ago, grandson & I tried putting them together & it turned into a laugh fest!

That frosting that comes with them must be the problem, as nothing would stick, we'd get the roof on & the walls would fall, everything was a total disaster including us. We had frosting all over us, the table & the floor & ended up throwing the whole mess out!!!

Yachter: Well, this is "house" # 5 for me in recent years and I have learned something new every year. Last year I learned a trick about the "glue" to assemble. I no longer use the icing. I use carmelized sugar, it hardens fast and holds like cement, however I don't recommend that when doing these with children as it is very, very hot and could cause serious burns if you get it on you.

This was so different..and very unique.

You did a fabulous job. Do you make a cardbord structure first, then add the 'walls'?
Love the longhorn inside, and the chicken on the roof.

I've made small ones with Girls Scouts, and they were a lot of work...
You really did a lot of detail, and it's fun to look at.

I do believe I've found another Virginia girl!! And Boy, is she talented!

I love it! I've never had the courage to try a gingerbread house, much less a masterpiece such as a whole barn and barnyard! You even have the farmer resting after cutting down a tree!!

I was showing this to my DS this morning and how that the barn was lit up. He said, "Kind of looks like the barn is on fire to me!"

I said, "Well, maybe the bull kicked the lantern over and set the barn on fire!"

Hey, I just go with the flow of creativity! In other words, I just spurt out whatever bunch of foolish nonsense that pops in my head, but my mind (and hands) sure can't create something this original and unique!

Every time I scroll back up I see something I missed the first time. I love the snow on the horse corral and I just noticed that you even have a silo! How cool is that!

I can't wait until DH gets home to show him this one. He LOVES farming and would do it for a living if there was enough $$s in it to take care of the family. He will have a fit over this!

I'm impressed in a BIG way! My DD stops at every gingerbread house kit she sees, but neither of us has the courage to bring one home and try it!

Maybe you would be kind enough to do a step-by-step tutorial, sometime. Someone like me has to "see" it before I can do it!

At least share the secrets you've learned! Hey, I'm just over in Appomattox. Call me next time and I can come and watch! I would promise to just sit in a corner and be quiet as a 'Church Mouse', but it won't do any good to lie! Everyone here knows I can't be quiet one second! LOL

What a labor of love. Msut have taken you a long time to complete. Like everyone else I'm blown away by the details. I've always wanted to create a gingerbread house. I have done small ones with molds with children, but nothing like yours. It's wonderful, just like a scene right out of the country.

Very cool gingerbread house idea! I made one many years ago, but never even thought about doing a barn...love it! Don't let anyone eat it, it's too pretty! ;-)

Thank you everyone for your very kind words!! Believe me when I say, If I can do it you absolutely can too!

Betty, thank you for the warm welcome from another VA girl! I found a "free" pattern on line (website below) for the barn. I cut the pattern out of a heavy construction type paper and use that to cut out the gingerbread. I usually try to make the gingerbread a few days, even a week prior to assembly to ensure it is good and hard. Rather than use the royal icing as the "glue" to hold the house together I use carmelized sugar. It drys fast and is like cement, but you shouldn't use it with children as it is extremely hot and can cause serious burns should you get it on your skin. Then I use the royal icing to pipe the seams and cause the snow drift effect on the barn and fence.

From there,just let your imagination take over.

In my mind barns are red with a black roof so I used a little royal icing tented with red food coloring to paint the barn red. The black roof is made from chocolate waffer cookies. The fence around the horses is gingerbread, however the fence around the sheep I found at michaels. I would like to say I made the animals, however they were found at walmart and target in the childrens toys department. Maybe when I get a little more confidence I will attempt figures out of gum paste like they do in the tv competitions (he he he). The "base" of the silo is a paper towel roll covered in gingerbread and the top is aluminum foil rolled in a ball covered in gingerbread and baked, then sprinkled with powered sugar to make it look like it is covered in snow.

I'm just in total awe of your creativity and talent in creating these masterpieces! I love the barn and the little cottage is very cute also.

Maybe you could make animals out of marzipan. I used to buy them at the bakery when we lived in Europe and use them to decorate cakes. Not sure if that is easier than the gum paste but the marzipan was very tasty to eat as well! Just a suggestion, I'm sure I don't have the patience to make them myself!
