Would you buy a Gateway laptop all comments welcome.

Is tosh short for toshiba? (smiles)

I have been wanting a laptop for YEARS but $$ problems keep popping up and I don't want to buy a cheap one just to get one. I want one that I will use more than my desktop.

Right now I am tossing around the Gateway and Toshiba wondering which to buy?

I have had wonderful luck with Gateway desktops but think laptops are a whole new ballgame as they are crunched together in such a small case. "Have air, will breathe".

Right now I was bouncing back & forth with the Gateway P series or NV (17") and am leaning towards the Toshiba A500-ST6647 Core I7.
So much to have to know before you take the leap!

So hard to buy site unseen as I will have to order it.

Not all wireless 2.4 phones disrupt it. Tried a $9 GE from Walgreen's here and it very rarely disrupted... and never on ring or dial. Maybe once every three days. Yet my old expensive Sony would daily a time or two for no reason cause loss of wifi for a minute. Have been using DECT 1.9 phones,, 5 of them here .. they never disturb it. If connecting to a neighbors wifi,, you might talk to the neighbor and explain the benefits of securing thier wifi so you 'cant connect to it unless you know the passkey. Then at least you would get a popup asking you to enter the secret and know you're not stealing their connection. Or just get a bigger antenna and cancel your internet connection and use your neighbors.. heh Have read some people have continue to have problems with 5.8 phones too. I forget exactly ... even though they say 5.8, many will communicate or ring or dial or something on 2.4.

It says it needs VGA video drivers but the screen is fine to me. That's because it's not in VGA mode, the only time it uses VGA mode is at the very beginning of boot at the splash screen for instance, before the on- board or video card driver is loaded. The VGA Driver is also loaded in Safe Mode and needed there to see.

You might look at gateways website. If you do much graphics the graphic's card in that model is the same one I have in my laptop and quite frankly its the bottom of the barrell minimum card for Vista. A quick look at gateway.com shows their 'M Series-X' with an upgraded graphics is actually about a $100 less. But hard drive is smaller,,, I didnt really spend time compairing other features. I wish I had a better graphics card and I seldom do any graphics to speak of. Windows Vista rating experience on my laptop is 3.2 out of 5.9 the reason is that intel intergrated graphics card. It's the slowest component on the list of items that they apply the Vista user experience rating with. Below 3 is not suitable for vista.

Transfering pictures from old PC to new laptop

The email might not be the best option, depending on your connection. If you reduce the file size of the picture, you reduce the quality of the image. They have really inexpensive USB drives out now. I bought a 1GB drive for $14. You just drag your pictures over until it is full, then drag them into your MyPictures folder on your new computer. It is reusable - just delete them off after you have them transfered and do it again until you are finished. A CD will hold less than a 1GB USB drive. Large USB drives are available. Hopefully you don't have thousands of pictures on your computer - I have 10's of thousands! Make sure you learn how to use your burner and back up your photos soon - hard drives fail, no matter how new the machine - you are on borrowed time if you do not backup your pictures, and it only takes a few minutes.

I've been using a Gateway LT for almost 2 years now and all if fine with it, except that the letters on the keys started to wear off within 10 months (I'm a heavy computer user). Not sure if all their models are this way. My sister's Toshiba is 2 years old or more, and her letters are still perfect.

Other than that, no problems.

*LOL* No, tosh is not toshiba. Reading good things about the Gateway NV series what's the tech support like.

The support was real good in 2004 when I purchased my desktop but I do not know about now.

THIS is what I am toying with but can't seem to get my mind made up.
