Opinions on schlage vs. emtek vs. kwikset doorknobs
Comments (20)i sell doors and hardware. My opinion is, Must get a feel of all knobs of interest, before you go any farther. Then look at your purchase. Amortize your purchase, this long term or short term. Then look at your budget, but you spent $20k to $100k on a remodel or over $500k plus to build a house and you decided to save money on your locksets? You spent $1,000 plus on an entry door and your going to put a $100.00 lock on it? really? Our sales here are 90/95% Emtek. No one offers what they do. - Randy...See MoreEmtek Hardware or cheapy brand?
Comments (10)You pretty much get what you pay for with door hardware. The cheap stuff works ok with lightly used doors. Not so well with daily use doors. I have learned that being frugal(tactful way of saying buying cheap stuff) usually winds up being more expensive in the long term. You buy the less expensive knobs, and two wear out/break in a year. If you can still get the same design, ok. If not, now you have to buy all new, or have mismatched knobs. Example. I used to live in a trailer(tin roof/sides is not a mobile home). The entry door knobs were junk when I bought it used. I bought cheap replacements(trailer, right?) Finally bought $60 sets(door latch/dead bolt) for each door. That was over 20 years ago. I'd bet they are still there(were two years ago when I left.)...See MoreDoor Hardware: Emtek, Schlage, or Kwikset
Comments (11)I don't actually have any firsthand experience with Emtek, but it appears to be good quality middle-range door hardware. I usually specify door hardware from Omnia, which makes very good architectural-quality hardware. I think it's probably a bit more more expensive than Emtek, but it's nowhere near the cost of stuff like Rocky Mountain Hardware, and some of the other brands that advertise heavily in the fancy design magazines. You can check out Omnia at their website: http://www.omniaindustries.com/ You can also compare prices on Emtek vs. Omnia at the website of Knobs and Things.com. They carry a wide range of both brands at competative prices (see the link below). One other bit of advise, if you're buying a whole house worth of door hardware, you might be better off letting your contractor place the order, unless you're willing to carefully think through every detail of every door. Door hardware is more complicated than most people think. You need to specify which hand, door thickness, offset, strike and type (privacy, passage, etc.). If the contractor makes a mistake, it's his problem. If you get it wrong, it's yours. I also recommend that you specify that all locks should be keyed the same. Then one key opens everything, so you don't have to find a different key for every door. James...See MoreDouble Hill (SDH) door hardware vs. Emtek, Baldwin
Comments (0)Hi, I've been considering Emtek (Luzern or Mercury style) or Baldwin (Wave style) door levers for all our interior doors. Today I stopped by yet another showroom and judging by the styles I was interested in the sales guy offered me door hardware by Double Hill (Zephyr style). I liked it a lot (the look and feel of it). The guy said that's what he has in his home and he is happy with the quality. I have never heard of Double Hill. On their web site they appear as SDH Hardware. Not many online stores sell it. Does anyone here on the GW have this hardware? What is your experience? How is the quality comparing to Emtek and Baldwin? Thank you! Here is a link that might be useful: Double Hill Lever - Zephyr style...See Morejaymielo
