Wireless Network

I have a Dell 3000 wired to the internet thru a Westell 327W router. Also coneected to the the Dell is my printer. I have a Gateway 7320 laptop connected to the Dell by wireless thru a security enabled wireless network. I can't use the printer from my laptop-I tried sharing and online the printer- but nothing works. Why

So from your laptop you went to 'Printers & Faxes' and 'Add Printer' and it can not find the printer ?
Is the desktop booted and printer powered power is on ?

In your laptop 'Services' set the Print Spooler to automatic and make sure its running.

try a full power down of everything I do mean everything. Power off the computers, the router, the modem etc. leave all power off for 5 mins or so, then power up in this order, power to modem only let it get fully lit up, then power on to router, let it get fully lit up, then power up your computers letting each get fully loaded. Then try to connect to your wireless, I assume you have put in your wireless network passphrase for the laptops that are trying to access the wifi network.

Just to add,your wired computer must be turned on in order for the wireless to print, at least mine does I found out.

Suprised linksys doesn't have a CD install that prompts you thru most of the settings and security setting. Mostly I find its not knowing the technical wording that confuses & scares people. Really not much to it. Pick a channel your neighbors not on... 1, 6, or 11 hopefully as they have perfect non overlapping radeo wave frequency. Change the 'ssid' = name of your 'radio station' to something other than linksys. Some check boxes for PSK & WPA = basicly the type of secure phrase it will accept. 128 bits is fine on encryption. Make a passphrase, I used my firstnamelastname. With a twist. Make sure you copy& paste that passphrase and get it on each computer before pushing the set button. Then add or change the login/password on the login to the wifi access point/router. Most of that just flows with, next page, next page in the routers wifi setup. Possibly. The first thing you should try is moving the existing router around. Sometimes even a few inches of movement can make a difference. Generally speaking you want the router to be up high and free of obstructions around it. The are also, depending on the router, hacks for the firmware that allow you to change the settings increasing, for example, signal strength. You could also look into different antennas for the router. Another possibility is to use a "repeater." While there are devices especially made for the purpose, they tend to be a little expensive. You can use another router, access point, or even some print servers to function in the capacity of a repeater and position it on, say, the first floor somewhere. The last alternative and one guaranteed to work, is to run a length of CAT5 cable between the basement router and your bedroom. Although depending on the layout of your house, that may or may not be easy to do. Another option might be to run CAT5 between the basement and first floor, positioning the router there.

I think "mikie" has the idea, clearly you need to "add a network printer" to your family of printers your laptop has access too. One thing this needs to do is add the necessary driver. I can't say I remember if your notebook "sees the printer", but I think that's what mikie has suggested. I haven't done this for a few months and would have to "feel my way along".

Mikie I tried "Printers & Faxes" and "Add a Printer" and it cannot find the printer and the desktop is booted and printer powered on. I cannot add a printer. You mentioned "Services"- where do I find it the "Services" I used to be able to add printers but now I can't and don't know why.

choose Management

My laptop will not print without leaving the spooler on. On my laptop - When I set it to automatic, Spooler will start at boot. Or if set manual, I can go to services when I want to print, which isnt often, and start the spooler before it will find the printer.
