I do not want to do business with google. Is that the only way I can download new books.

sure you don't have to get books from there or apps from there if you don't want to, get the kindle app from amazon and get your books from amazon instead. Or get the aldiko app ereader from amazon apps store with it you will use epub format books so will have to download books from sites that offer epub.

You will need to get the amazon app to be able to access the amazon app store.
Find your favorite apps in the Amazon Appstore.

Thanks Raven. I have another question for you, I keep getting a message that the certificate is not valid anymore. I went to the pdn site and a lot of people are needing it, didn't find an answer, but I didn't have time to look very long. Can I find them with the names you gave me, they have a lot of apps I imagine?

I'm not sure how you can say you don't want to do business with Google, but you do want to download a Google app? Can't have it both ways.

I have a gmail account and NEVER receive an unwanted message from them or anyone else. As mikie says, there's no need to give a phone number.

I love the idea of supplying pests with a number for dial-a-prayer number or an overly aggressive religious organization, that kills two birds with one stone (it drives both sides crazy, deservedly so).

snidely I do NOT want to download a google app, that is what this post is about. I did not know I had to have the app and did not know it was a google app until I got to the install point.

The reason I gave my real phone number is because I don't lie. It was my cell that got the spam not an email.

If so, here's the thing. Google developed the Android op system and gives it away for free. Your device was less expensive to buy, in part, for that reason. In return, there are certain quid pro quos. If you want apps from their regulated site, you need to register with a gmail address. You can choose not to, and there are some shady non-Google sites with android apps but I don't recommend them.

Emma, I'm an honest person too, but that doesn't mean I supply correct information when I think it's better not to. Like on a website, if a question is asked you don't want to provide, don't provide it. It's not a moral dilemma.

Snidley, I tried it your way and they send the confirmation code through the phone so that didn't work. I gave them my number and no spam text this time. When I did all of that my pdn won't work because of the certificate validation. My tablet is larger and easier to use, I tried it and it doesn't recognize it.

When I first bought the PDN it worked fine. I don't remember downloading something but I must have. I downloaded free books with no problem.

I am giving up on it, I will just prop up my 3lb book on something. LOL

That's too bad, you should be able to use it as you want to.

Did you try using an email address for the confirm code?

I just filled the form out and didn't see a way to do that. It's not that important.

did you click the link I provided to get the Amazon app for installing the Amazon app store on it? Once you have the Amazon app installed then you sign into your Amazon account to access the app store and then you can search for whatever app you want. The aldiko reader is a good reader app that I like. You can also install the Kindle reader app, once you have it you can choose books from the Amazon eBook store many are free and have them sent directly to your Kindle app for download.

just use the device, go online click the link I gave you, install the Amazon app store app on your device, go back to the app you installed click it and it will take you right to the apps store. You will have to use your Amazon name and password.

Raven kindle's was a google app also and I suppose they all are. I tried and it didn't work for me. My pdn needs a certificate, so I tried my sylvania tablet. Amazon does not have a kindle for android tablets that I could find. I went through the process with the tablet and it was for a phone, which was suppose to work on a tablet, but it would not recognize my tablet.

NO kindle is offered at Google app store but it is NOT a google app it is by Amazon the makers of Kindle and the kindle app for android, you can get it from many places only one of which is google but definitely not the only place to get it. That is why I gave you the link to the amazon app store you can get it there rather than google.
I have the kindle for android on every single tablet I have and I have many. So it definitely is there and available.

I have no idea what the certificate is you mention can you tell me what it says? I have never seen anything on any tablet about needing a certificate. Post what it says.

a couple of questions check to make sure your PDN has the correct time, date, area set.

Do you have an SD card in the memory card slot? In some cases you must have one inserted to download apps or books.

I no longer have my PDN but mine was a very old version not sure which you have and which Android version it is that info would be helpful.
I think the PDN comes with the SAM SlideMe app store loaded on it, if so you should be able to get your apps from there easily by using the slideme app.

I went to amazon and googled kindle for android and got the same thing barnes and noble had the google app. Your link is what I needed.

I have mostly gotten my books for the PDN using the B&N app. No problems at all, and I have loads of free books as well as some I have bought. I have both the Nook and the Kindle apps on my Android phone and my Nexus tablet. So I can get books from either source besides all the other free sources.

Emma is right about the validation code. Maybe its something new with Google, but last night they wouldn't let me log on to my gmail account without varifying my phone #. I had to type my cell # and they send an validation code which I had to type in to access my account.

I have 4 gmail accounts but, so far it only did it with my main account.

I thought it weird and it bothered me too. I have not received any spam phone or texts.

Raven I set the time and date, don't know if it would work with Google or not. I am not going there again. Then I tried to install Slide-Me and the PDN kept going to sleep. I will try again, will keep waking it until it fully installs. I did get it installed on my Sylvania Tablet and downloaded a free e book.

Jane thanks for the confirmation. I had an account years ago and I didn't have to go through all that we have to now. There is no reason we should have to share our phone number with organizations like that.

I really prefer holding real books, but am reading the Outlander Series AGAIN and they are very big books, it bothers my hands. I thought I would install them on a reader for that reason. I wonder what will happen to all of the customers ebooks if Barnes and Nobles go out of business.

ok here is the deal on google I just went to my gmail to see if it did it to me and yes that screen came up asking for my mobile number I have never given it and won't if you just go to the bottom of that page and hit save and continue it takes you right to you email you are not forced to fill out your phone number. Just skip it and hit continue. I did and it opened right to my email.
They want your cell number as a safety net if someone is trying to hack your account, I give them an alternate email address instead and they contact me that way. Which they did recently when someone was trying to access my account. Plus they put a lock on my gmail till I answered them from my alternate email address.

About B&N that is exactly why you keep a copy of all your books on your pc so you are not depending on them. I have a folder on my pc with a copy of all my books, plus I have them on the SD card in my tablet.

Raven I am determined to learn to use the PDN and will probably come to you with more questions if I can't find answers by googling. I have the white PDN and it does not seem to have a model number. If you need the version number I can find that for you. How do you save your books? If I keep a card in my reader will it go there? Can I down load books through my PC with a usb cable?

yes you can use a cable but what I do is just move my SD card from my tablet to the card reader on my PC or I use a very inexpensive card reader that plugs into the USB port of the PC. Load the books from your PC into the SD card, safely remove, then plug into your tablet. Most newer PC have SD card reader built in. if you need to buy a portable USB type you can get them anywhere electronics are sold including Walmart, biglots, radio shack.

you can find all the info on your tablet and Android version right in the tablet under settings about.

Raven, for some reason I have lost all of the Outlander books except for the first two. I have read them all, but would like to keep a copy of each. You generously provided me with the files of several of them over a year ago. I even went to my gmail account and searched for the e-mails there, but somehow those have been deleted. If you still have them, would you be so kind as to share them with me again? If you do not still have the e-mail address you used for me, just use the one I have on this forum. I will be eternally grateful to you.
