Craftsman-appropriate toilet (w/ good reviews!), sink?

Hello,

I need a new toilet and would for once in my life like to get a decent one. The one w/ the good reviews that I can tell from little research seem to point toward more modern looking toilets. I prefer one w/ a taller tank and maybe more square or at least w/ square "trim" along the top - and then while I'm at it I'd like to replace our pedestal sink. The one I picked out 10 years ago in a hurry is more victorian whereas our home is a 1913 craftsman. The sink that was I think original was the kind that stood on metal legs and was square - but it had a huge break down the middle of the bowl so we got rid of it.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried salvage yards? I had the original pedestal sink in our 1916 craftsman resurfaced by Perma Glaze. It looks wonderful...even 10 years after we had it done. We have an architectural salvage store in our area, and they have lots of old sinks that would look gorgeous if resurfaced. And the Perma Glaze guy in our area actually has an inventory of restored sinks. Worth checking, if your interested. We are considering one of these sinks for our new home being built.

Re: sink-I bought Kohler Bancroft in the bigger size. To my eye, it looks completely accurate for a bungalow.

Take a look at the American Standard (AS) Town Square. It comes in both a one-piece and two-piece tank and bowl. It also uses the 3" trap just as the Toto's do, gets high map scores (1,000), qualifies for the local water company rebate as a high efficiency 1.28 gallon toilet. It appears that the newer American toilets flush much better than their water-saving predecessors. This is most likely the toilet I'll be getting. The one-piece is easier to clean, but it can up a couple hundred dollars more to the price.

You might also consider the Kohler Memoirs toilet, however, many on this site complain that the Kohlers clogg. It, too, gets a high map score (1,000), has the square tank top, and looks very traditional. As with everything else, do your research before buying.

If you haven't shopped for toilets in a while, be prepared for some sticker shock. I was flabbergasted at some of the prices for the newer toilets and for the highly-coveted washlet. Since I'm remodeling the hallway/guest bathroom, I'll fore-go the washlet and put that money into a better cast iron tub.

You can also search the site for Kohler Memoirs, Toto, AS, etc. and you'll find several opinions on toilets.

Thanks for the responses everyone! Let's see if I can address them all: There's a lot of focus on my guest bedroom area. My intent for that space is really to "flex" with us as our family ages, like you said, @lavender_lass. For now, I see it being used as an extra room- play room, or whatever with a bed or pull out couch for the infrequent times we do have adult over night guests. It can also be used as a BR if someone breaks their leg or has surgery or something. Then, as we age, it will become our Master bedroom. The Guest bath is large because we needed one that is wheelchair accessible. We have 3 friends and family members in w/c now, so it was drawn with them in mind. (And any future handicaps in ourselves.) So currently, it will be used as the bathroom that every guest uses when they visit. I didn't want it to open right on to the family room, cuz I think that's a little tacky! :) I don't like the door being where it is to the "guest suite" or flex space or whatever you want to call it. I was thinking about moving the door down, like you suggested, @kirkhall. Since you mentioned it, I'm thinking that's probably a really good idea! @fotomatt- just curious what you meant about the small look/sq footage? Didn't know if you meant that I haven't used the space well, or if I did use it well! Does the exterior elevation look wrong? I was actually worried that I have too much sqft. Just wondering- I won't bite, I promise! :) @andi_k- good point! And actually, after looking at those pics again, they don't seem to have alot of usable counter space, either. I might have to rethink my vision for that room. Adding a little footage to the mudroom might be on the agenda. I need to check and see if it will jive with the upstairs. So....what do you think about my front windows, then? Should I cut them down to 2 casements w/ transoms? That would give me a little more room to play with in the mudroom, but would that ruin my exterior look? So many good things to think about! I appreciate them all!

That seems like a very good price. I did a quick read through, and a couple of things jumped out. There is vinyl siding, and then there is quality vinyl siding. You should get some assurances it would be the latter. $3500 seems like a good price to upgrade to fiber cement. Just make sure it isn't James Hardie brand prepainted siding. There have been a lot of reports of paint failures with that brand, especially in snow country. A 150 amp electrical service is too small by today's standards. Most homes are built with a 200 amp service. Our new home is getting a 400 amp service. Textured ceilings hide lousy sheet rock work and are almost impossible to repair properly. I suggest you insist of flat finished ceilings throughout the main level, and also the lower level, if you don't take my next suggestion. Either have the builder pour a ten foot foundation wall or go with an eight foot ceiling in the lower level. Either way. make it a dropped ceiling. Dropped ceilings provide direct access to the space above them. It's great for running new wires, access to HVAC ducts, tracing a plumbing leak, etc., without tearing the ceiling out. Good luck. Beverly, thanks for your input on the color! DH would probably freak of I did that as he thinks everything should be painted white. I actually felt like my choice was pretty bold for him lol. But I absolutely see your point! I have a handyman coming this week for another project so I'll ask him about the mirror coming down. Because of sink placement the widest mirror I could do is about 28". The current one is 24" wide. Any suggestions? Also if I stick with the RH light, what is the best metal finish to go with it? This is brushed bronze Or ORB Or something else?

I'm planning on doing this in the next few months. Have had the sink picked out for a couple of years! Wanted to put two faucets in the wall, but husband is adamantly against it. So I guess I will make do with them mounted in the countertop. I see some nice ones online. The sink is about 30" wide, and has no faucet holes. Cabinet is 54", and there is no room for anything larger. I think we can do with about a foot of counter space each on either side. Better than one small sink/faucet. Frankly, I think it will be a huge improvement, even for resale. Even undermount oval sinks would take up about 20" each, leaving only 14" for the space between, and the spaces on either side. I think that would look ridiculous. :)

I just bought the very reasonably priced Toto Promenade. We looked at the Drake by Toto but it was too contemporary a style. The Promenade has nice "squarish" traditional shape that might work for your Craftsman style home. Its been installed for only a few weeks but we all are really happy with both the looks and the performance.

On the Terry Love website he says that this new Promenade has essentially the same workings as the Drake which is his best selling toilet. It comes with the 1.6 gallon or the smaller volume (I think it's 1.28 - it's called the Eco Promenade).

I have the same question, and do like the look of the Promenade. I wonder, is there a vintage-looking loo with a skirted bottom, though? Would be nice not to have to clean around all those bumps... Ta for any hints!
