oh my gosh - I figured I'd get one or two responses on this! :) ok - some more truth to divulge... we also have oak trim and doors. So I am also trying to break up a 'sea of oak' in my BR as well. So I do have multiple agendas here. We do have the intent of resale in the next few years and oak is still popular here, so painting/changing the oak isn't really in the cards. I would have 2 sets of bifold doors in a row. So it's not simply the lack of space in the room that has me contemplating alternate door options. Kiko - I don't think anyone takes offense to your input. ;) But I do think that mirrors on the ceiling would raise more eyebrows than closet doors. LoL. I lost my bf to cancer 6 years ago at (her) ripe old age of 26. Cancer SUCKS - what more can anyone say than that.?.

I don't see why you can DIY. It won't have a recessed look like the one you posted, but would look like the doors nosoccermom has. You can have mirror cut to the exact size you need so that the 6 panels are covered, then trim the edges out with molding. If you're concerned about additional weight on the door, then reinforce the hinges by replacing the center screws in the top and middle hinge with a much longer screw. Also, ask the mirror/glass supply store for some padded spacers. You will need them if there are gaps between the mirror and the panels on the doors. Gaps will allow the mirror to flex, something you don't want.

handymac gave you perfect advice, and it's hard to improve on it. The only thing I will add is that you may need to put in a pilot hole for the 3" screws. I, too, suspect that you have short screws and they are close to stripping out. However, you may have trouble driving 3" screws all the way in unless you have a pilot hole. Just don't make it too big in diameter: the diameter of the drill bit should be the same size as the center shank of the screw (i.e., the part you see when you hold the screw up to the light and ignore the threads). You can pick the right bit by holding bits up against the screw, and choosing the one that best matches that shank.

The closet in my master is 29 inches deep. Then I have 3 other closets upstairs like this in my sons' rooms and the guest rooms. Those closets are 22, 23, and 24 inches deep. I'm standing in front of them now and thinking that if I had shelves on the sides and a bar across connecting them....well, if they were jammed packed like I have some of these closets then it might be annoying trying to move past the hangers to reach the shelves. It depends on how much stuff is in there. Looking at it now, I think I have actual "dead space" above my bar. There is so much room between the shelf above the bar and the ceiling that if I was to change my closet right now I might just keep the bar across and add cubbies above the bar for my bulky sweaters. I really don't find reaching into the side space to be that annoying. I noticed in my husbands closet he has his suits in the side space. He only wears suits at weddings and funerals. He also keeps the ironing board in there. We don't iron often. Apparently I never do bc I just now learned that's where we keep it. Lol. I don't think that little bit of "wasted space" is worth such a huge overhaul. As long as it's lit well and the doors are good (I can't say enough how much of a difference it was going from sliders and bifold doors in my last house to doors that swing open). And we have good lighting in the closet which makes it easier to see all the way into the side space. For the record, I hang 90% of my clothes. I only fold sweaters and undergarments. So having just hanging bar isn't so bad for me.
