Lost IE menu(?) bar

I almost never use I.E., unless it is to open some site with the FireFox add-on View in IE, so I just realized today what has been making it look so bare and strange: The File>Edit>View>History>Favorites>Tools, etc., bar is missing, and I can't figure out how to bring it back to life.

Would someone please tell me what to do? I have recently had trouble with a PC virus, but got help for it and hopefully am now clean, but a number of things got changed in the process. I do not think this is one of them-seem to recall a "bare-looking" IE even before the virus trouble started.

I am running IE 8.0.6001.18702. I have just noticed that the real problem may be that I have a bar of sorts, but many of the buttons are just black, so I have to hover the mouse over them to see what they are for. And then, I did find some things like View in a drop-down menu. I would like those small icons back!

Default I believe is press the alt key to show the file/view/etc menu bar but it can be set to show all the time along with how menu icon show by right clicking an empty to the right of a tab and checking the appropiate item and text/no-text is the customize item.

try this for the black toolbar
Black toolbar in IE8

on the top of your toolbar right click and select to show menu bar and any other of the missing bars you are not currently showing.

The menu bar and the toolbar are missing in Internet Explorer on Windows Vista or Windows XP or in Windows Explorer on Windows XP

Maybe right click a blank spot on the menu bar and unclick the lock toolbar... then hopefully you;ll see the little verticle bars that you grab and move the menu bar stuff around,, hopefully the address item is there collapsed and you;ll just need to stretch it out.

Way to go, RC. I had tried right clicking the blue area but nothing. At your suggestion I began right clicking as I dropped the curser downward. I think it was the second gray section below the blue where a block came up that had "menu" listed. I clicked and there it was. Sure do thank you. just do the little work around it is super easy just some dragging and dropping involved just right click the taskbar and unlock it before you start, choosing toolbars then NEW toolbar is very simple and then dragging and dropping the new one on to the desktop is just one move. When you right click on that new one on the desktop you will be able to see the address bar option to select. Once you have that then just grab onto that new toolbar and drag it back to the taskbar next to the start button. Thats it now you have your new address bar toolbar on the taskbar. You can leave the other one on your desktop if you want or just delete it or drag it to the recycle bin. But you do want to remember to right click on the taskbar and check to lock it so it all stays in place.
