My PC cuts off after a minutes of Picasa - it also cuts off after 4 minutes of Word, but I can stay on-line and email all day and it's fine.

I do have a bunch of photos in Picasa - sometimes 4 or 5 copies of the same photo and don't know why. Could that be the problem? and how can I get rid of the dups?

When you say "It cuts off in Picassa and Word" do you mean it shuts down entirely? If so I suggest you have a heat problem, how old is the computer and how long since you have had the left side off and cleaned out the dust bunnies?

Shut the computer down and remove the left side panel. Now take a look inside and there should be a fan facing you on the motherboard. Are the fins underneath the fan covered in dust and crud? Leave the side off for now and restart the computer, is the fan spinning at an acceptable speed? If not shut down and replace the fan sudden like. If the fan is working now run your Picassa and see how long you can go before it quits again.

Let us know what you find so further help can be provided.

Computer is 3 years old and it does have an overheating problem - I tried using a Targus Chill Mat, but that didn't help a bit.

Computer shuts off entirely when I use Picasa or Word. It's a laptop and I tried to get the tiny little screws off, but only got half of them off - used the compressed air and blew out as much dust as I could - they weren't just bunnies, they were Harveys. Picasa is running longer now, but still shuts down after maybe 5 minutes.

I'm giving up on Picasa - don't know why I have 4 or 5 copies of almost every photo - I'll try to find another photo program.

Hi Kat. I've had picassa for a few years now. I really got confused with the software it installed on my PC, partly on how I chose the folders for it to use (which was way too many) and couldn't figure out how to change it. But did manage to get it to work to upload pics once in awhile. But I much prefer just going to the website and choosing to upload from there. Have you tried that? I bookmarked the main page: https://picasaweb.google.com/home. Try going here and logging in, and see if you find that easier to browse to your albums and upload things. I did join up with google+ finally (they kept prompting me to, and I kept ignoring it. But my sister joined and then added me to her google+ circles, so finally took the plunge! It does change things a bit, so some getting used to). Anyway, what you'll find if you are a google+ member is that the above url will change to 'https://plus.google.com/photos/114258480802796606590/albums?banner=pwa'. But other than that, seems pretty much the same. Hope you get it figured out! Marj

"...how the heck could 3 mb be too large? Do you have any ideas?" I see two galleries, I've used neither. Trying them just now, they don't seem to get along with Firefox? I'm assuming this is the upload form you're using? http://photos.gardenweb.com/garden/galleries/upload.html If so, it does say "Make sure the image doesn't exceed 500 KB". That being the case, your images are around six time too large. I'm betting that if, as suggested by DA, you use Irfanview to downsize them first, they'll upload fine. BTW, the uploader that's available here in these forums(not the gallery) allows a full "5000 k". It resizes the images to make them more bandwidth friendly. Although it's been a very long time since I've been on dial-up, I remember it being excruciatingly slow. Loading a page containing even a single 3 MiB image would have probably given me time to go brew a pot of coffee, come back and drink a cup. Am I remembering it being worse than it really was? At about 3 KiB/s download speed(I lived way out in the sticks) it would have taken how long? Maybe 1024 secs? 17 minutes? Maybe my math is not precise but the point is that although 3 MiB is small for those with high-speed Internet, for those on dial-up it's really huge.
