Why wont my Linksys router work?

I have a home office in my basement that has 2 computers that need internet access. I am currently using DSL from Talk America. I bought a Linksys cable/DSL router model BEFSR41 from Wallmart. I could not get the router to work. I used the set up instructions, called Linksys and still no luck. I looked on the Lynksys website and the had a program called Easy Link that was supose to help install the router. I downloaded it and I got both computers to work. Well I was having DSL problems and my DSL was on and off for a few weeks. Talk America finally somewhat fixed it. Anyway the router stopped working. I recheched all my connections and even tried the Easy Link set up and still nothing. The router and DSL modom light up properly but the computers still dont have internet access. The computers will work without the router. I returned the router to Wall Mart and got another router. I still cant get it to work. What gives? It it possible my DSL signal is weak and cant be split? Im not happy with the DSL and am thinking of switching over to cable. What should I do?

Who's make and model dsl modem ? Does it have a PPPoE connection ?

Most dsl modems are combination modem/routers and fully handle handing out lan ip#, bunches of em. Possible all you really need is a network switch. Depends.

It is a Paradyne 6211. I dont know what a PPPoE connection is. Sorry, I dont know trheat mush about computers. I was at the Linksys web site at the forum section and this model seems to have problems. There was many complaints about not being able to connect to the internet or just being disconnected for no reason. I was even at Circuit City's site of reviews and it is hit and mis about this router.

Good thing you posted again. What happens with this forum is if you post a new message and leave it alone, it will remain at the top of the forum for several days while people decide whether they want to reply. What you did was immediately post more pictures. That released your message to drift down through the milieu of new posts right away. Your post today bumped it back to the top. You overseeded with bermuda on June 1 and less than a month later you are concerned about it not filling in. Is that correct? I would say, come back in a month and see if you have the same questions. How are you watering now? How often and for how long? It is time to fertilize with organic fertilizer. I would suggest using Milorganite as the bag rate. Milorganite is an organic that will not hurt your grass and will improve your soil. Typically centipede grasses thrive in the poorest of soils, so the Milorganite will be a good first step in reviving it. In August you can probably start in with the Bermuda Bible recommendations on fertilizer. With that soil you might want to alternate monthly feedings between organic and chemical for a year. All this fertilizer and water will kill off any vestiges of centipede you might have still hanging on.

I called my friend who had it a year ago before me. Turns out the ethernet jack isn't functional ( I didn't realize this since I've only used it via wireless. Anyhow, this week it became a nice doorstop/paperweight for three reasons: 1) ethernet jack broken, as mentioned, so no internet there 2) I dropped it two days ago, which was a direct side hit on the PCI adaptor, which somehow broke the power connection to the PCI slots - so no power there, and 3) I tried to install a USB adaptor tonight, but can't open it's config utility, which was why I was trying to use the ethernet for internet to solve - nothing else works. Anyhow, thanks for the feedback.

zep et. al.: Sorry I didn't get back sooner but with my limited experience, I was a little leary of doing the uninstall of network adapter. However I finally realized that at worst it would only mess up the laptop and not the other devices that are connected and working on the secured network. So: I just uninstalled and rebooted. The adapter did reinstall but I am still not getting a proper connection although things have slightly changed. The secured network got connected, but did not even ask for the security password and simply went to 'validating identity' and simply hung. It didn't even time out. I checked firefox to see if it was expecting a password there, as was the initial case to get connected to the Guest Network (where I am again now), but it couldn't find the server. You may recall, that previously the issue was that the secured net would ask for the password, but find it unacceptable and give 'limited or no connectivity. Is there a way to force the network to ask for the password?? Any other ideas? Eventually, I will probably find a way to get a knowledgeable person out to my house where they could diagnose this. FYI, I am creating another post about security updates that may tangentially be connected to this thread. I apparently successfully installed sp3 but 'security update' keeps wanting to install it AGAIN! I was worried I might not be able to shut down to reload the adapter, but I was able to cancel the update.

that is mac address filtering, if you have set up WPA2 on your security you should not have to worry about it. What mac filtering does is you get the mac address off of each pc that will be accessing the router and in the router settings you enter the specific mac address into the area for mac addresses. When you do that the absolute only thing that can gain access is what ever pc has a mac address that matches the one in the router. But if you have someone come over and visit and they want to use your wireless while they are there instead of just giving them your access password you have to get their mac address go into your router and put it in there. I have done both ways but my new one is on WPA2. As you saw once you put the password in once it will then recognize that pc and not ask it for the password again but each new pc or laptop that accesses it for the first time will have to enter the password which is why I always suggest taping it to the bottom of the router. Mac address filtering used to be used as an added layer of protection however it has gotten much easier for the bad guys to hack mac addresses unfortunately. to find out more just go to google and look up Mac address filtering.

When we bought our new computer, we had to purchase a new Linksys and card. Have you checked their site, and looked up the list of routers to see what is compatible with what you have? Maybe that is just too basic, and I should let real experts respond.

When I called the last time the woman who worked there had very broken English, and did not want me to ask her a question. She only wanted to interrogate me.

Quick search shows the Paradyne 6211 is a single port ADSL-Modem/Gateway/Router.

Probably a network switch would do you fine. Paradyne is probably already set up to do what you need but there are many ways to configure things and some isp's may do 'thier own thing' with configurations. So the router part of that modem may need a setting changed... but probably not.

If you want you can certainly use that linksys router you bought as a network switch,,, just dont use the wan port...
Plug the Lan from the Paradyne into one of the end LAN ports on the Linksys, along with your other two network cables.
If you do use it you should enter Linksys configurations and reset it to default settings,,,maybe press the reset on the back or where-ever... and in its configuration pages disable DHCP ... but that may not be neccessary.
I'm not familar with that router and its ins and outs.

Click on start > all programs > accessories > comand prompt - type in IPCONFIG hit enter. Once it returns results, type in IPCONFIG>all hit enter again. type in exit click enter.

Reboot. If it doesn't work run the network wizard in XP, that should do it.
