Raven, I have the free "Outlander" for Kindle on my pc.

Raven, I went to the link above onRead.com and selected a book in e-pub which I downloaded to my PC, going to load it onto my PDN, but when I looked at it in my documents section, it shows a zip icon. Will it still load?

Well, I answered my own question. I loaded it to my PDN but it won't open. I don't understand???? I read the FAQ's and help section. Sounds like I did the right thing, I selected the epub version. REally disappointed because there are 2 books I've been really wanting.

I tried to extract the files, then it said I needed to download their suggested program for ump...Media Manager. When I tried to install it my AVG kicked in and said it was a Malware and sent it to quarantine!!!! Help me! Thanks

well darn that was frustrating wasn't it! I actually never tried downloading any of them, I did register there since I saw it said you had to register to download but then got called away and never went back. So unfortunately I am of no help at this point. I will try to see what I can figure out.
I know I was able to read the books there on the site just fine and I like their format reader.
Usually if it is a zip file you have to extract it on your pc first then move only the actual extracted book file to the pdn, however this may be totally different.

Thanks Raven. Yes, I opened a book on their site and was able to read it. Today, I registered even though yesterday I downloaded the files without even registering. It didn't make any difference. When I extract the files it goes into this media manager. I didn't try to run that again. Let me know if you have any luck. I did the "contact" thing and explained my problem but I haven't heard back. Their forum looks like there are a few unhappy customers but looks like most got remedies. I may just try downloading a PDF file to my laptop and read it there....but I sure would like to get some on my PDN. (I'm reading a "real" book currently, the 3rd in the Outlander series. I found with reading those Outlanders that I keep wanting to check back and it is easier to find using a real book. I did find on this Outlander Forum I discovered that there is a thread posted which has the timelines and genealogy which helps me to keep the characters straight!)

I also tried last evening and got the same results casi did, so I just deleted the book I had downloaded.

I downloaded one and see it did come as a zip file.
Well it may be that we can only read them on line then. I have not given up!
There are so many there that I really want to read and it is so much easier to read on the PDN than on my netbook.

ok this is what I have determined so far, there are a lot of us trying to figure out how to get and use these books on our readers LOL
It may not be possible because this site is changing them to a .umf file format not epub, therefore it would take a .umf converter to change them to epub or a umf reader which is what that media manager thing is. I tried searching for a .umf converter and nothing is coming up that looks trustworthy. I had hoped that it was one of the formats that calibre would use but it is not.

so at this point I think we may have to just stick to reading them online free which is better than nothing.

I do not like the media manager program since it did trigger a response from your AV and I know nothing about that program so I think it best not to be messing with it.
Also when I was doing a google search for umf converter, of course I was doing this with linux, I did end up on one of those sites that tries to install one of the nasty rogue programs so if you try doing that kind of search be really careful. It did nothing to me on linux but had I been on windows that may have been dangerous.

Don't forget that anytime you download anything file or program before you open it right click on it and scan it with your AV and malwarebytes just to be sure they are clean.

I did run into several other PDN owners asking this same question on some of the android forums and no one had an answer there either.

Well, thanks for trying. That site does offer a lot of really good books. I didn't have any luck with that other site either, but maybe it was just for online reading, the Read books online free.

well you know what you can do because I just did it is use your PDN web browser go to the onread.com website and find the book you want to read and read it online through your pdn browser, it is not near as easy but it can be done.

The website whois is a "private" registration. What legitimate business wants to hide who they are? And it's trying to install an .exe on your system. Another huge red flag. Finally, it's offering books that are NOT available as free ebooks from legitimate sources. This does not impress me as anything I'd touch with a barge pole.

what exe? neither site tried to install anything at all when I was there reading the online books. The download for the books was a zip with no exe included.

There are 2 different websites mentioned which one are you talking about?

Certainly not urging anyone to go there to read books if they do not want to or are worried about it. I personally have not seen anything untoward just reading the online books, I have been doing it for a few days now. I of course did check it's WOT page and there are no negatives.

If just going to the site is triggering an exe install please post, I have not seen that happen, has anyone else?
If so we definitely do want to stay clear.
