Veterans Day Table

I created this table for Veterans Day.

Everything on the table is thrift store treasures except the red/white/blue foil star spray and the helicopter.

My husband was a helicopter mechanic in VietNam and this is a model of the ones he worked on when he was stationed there.

Thank you to all of our military heroes, past and present!! Our freedom rests on their shoulders and I am very grateful for their service.

That is wonderful, Candy! I love you added the helicopter and the story with it. Tell your DH I am proud of him, and all our vets. What you said is so perfect...our freedom DOES rest on their shoulders!

I confess to being a bit distracted and not thinking about tomorrow like I usually do. My Dad has to go in hospital to get his pacemaker replaced and will be in surgery about 2 hrs. But he should be released tomorrow evening if all goes well. He's a veteran of WWII, Korean War, and was in Vietnam during the first year (before things got really bad). And my 25 yr old grandson was in Iraq. So I darn well better get my head on right and be thinking of all the wonderful men and women who are the backbone of this country!

Lynne, I'm so happy that my table is inspiring you. Sounds like you have a wonderful start for it. With all your talent I'm sure your tables would be beautiful. Karen, I'm so tickled you got to get out of the house and go shopping. Will be looking forward to your photos. It snowed here yesterday and today it rained!haha I just bought my dishes this year and love them too. Janet, please show us pictures of your trees. They sound cute and would be great with seed beads on them. I made some trees along time ago and just dotted gold for the garland, cut out of hearts for ornaments and cut out stars on the branch tips and top, and they were pretty cute. Dream, can hardly wait to see your Thanksgiving table with these dishes. Jane, I think DD bought me the pheasant and deer plate last year when everyone was into pheasants. I whined and you know the rest of that story. I used the pheasant on my table because Karen had ask me to display it and show a picture awhile back. A Happy Wife...Is A Happy Life. I work at a college. Today, as we do every year, we participate in the National Roll Call. We have a ceremony at noon with college officials and student organization presidents. The National Roll Call organization supplies us with a list of servicepersons who died in action in the last year from our state. Our student organization presidents, about 10 of them, divide the list of deceased servicepersons and reads the names slowly aloud, giving a moment of silence for each one. Today, we had a very touching moment. One of our student leaders was the widow (a pretty little blond, about 20 years old) of one of the deceased serviceman, and she read her husband's name aloud. Not a dry eye.

I think of my dad, who, right after high school graduation with peach fuzz on his chin and the war in the Pacific still on, reported for induction. As did his classmates. The war ended just before he got there to be part of the occupying forces. Imagine, there was no talk in the school halls of "what schools are you applying to?" Everyone knew they were going into the armed forces. And I think of my FIL, who escaped from a German POW camp and ultimately fought with the liberation forces, but in the end he couldn't go home to his own country. and I think of the young men and women now, who join, aren't drafted. "Our people, whether enlisted or drafted, most of them tried to do what they felt was the right thing to do." About half of the men I served with during my initial active duty period in the Army were draftees. All were bitter in varying degrees about having been unwillingly uprooted from their civilian lives and forced to go into the military and potentially into mortal jeopardy. Other draftees I knew, classmates, work colleagues, brothers of friends, all felt the same way. Some while unhappy about having been drafted tried to make the best of their active duty experiences to protect their own backsides. Some didn't. I have extensive personal experiences to share on this particular topic and I doubt that you do. I was in a medical reserve unit for the majority of my enlistment term. There was a large contingent of physicians who had been drafted but assigned to inactive rather than active duty. I got to know many and among them, a large percentage had been "encouraged" by the Selective Service system to go to a graduate or professional school to continue their draft deferments as students and so wound up in medical school. Many were similarly bitter about having been ultimately drafted as doctors, it wasn't what they had envisioned the outcome of their medical school draft dodging to be. A doctor treating a patient will always be a doctor treating a patient, no matter what the circumstances, but none of those I met were happy about having a military obligation. As you didn't directly answer my question about whether your husband had been drafted, I will assume that was his pathway into the military. "But, I truly believe that without them, we would already be a minion of China." Is Germany a minion of China? How about Sweden, the Netherlands, the UK, Italy, Switzerland, France, on and on. None of these countries has been as irresponsible with their military as the US has and as previously stated, all of them have prosperity and freedom similar to what's in the US. I think the upshot of all of this is that there are veterans whose military service defined their lives and who are ready to don their old uniforms and march in Veterans Day parades. Some who had bad experiences that perhaps didn't trigger a lifetime of hyperpatriotism but did leave them with bad memories. There are others, myself included, who look back on their military service as being the result of bad luck without too series consequences (certainly true during the draft years) or a youthful mistake and who have moved on. A vet is a vet but don't assume all are happy to get a handshake or pat on the back, many I know really couldn't care less.

Candy, so glad you set this table for Veterans Day. I enjoyed reading about your DH and seeing the helicopter too. Pretty table and that runner is wonderful. I like the way you folded your napkins and added the silverware on this table.

Wonderful table, candy, that you are thinking of Veteran's Day tomorrow. RW&B & Stars & Stripes certainly fit the bill! I'm thinking those flag plates might be Kimball ...whatever they are, they look lovely on your table. And TFS your DH's helicopter & vet history...& yes, we must keep good thoughts & prayers going to all those serving our country. We are blessed. Jeanne S.

Candy, your table is such a lovely Tribute to All our War Veterans.
I like how you incorperated the helicopter and it's meaning.
I think you did an excellent job with the banner,your napkins, flatware and your RW&B plates.
I see you were hanging from the chandelier again!
Geat overhead shot.
My cousin was a Helicopter Pilot in Viet Nam and my Father served in WW11.
I'm so grateful for all who served for our Country...
It's nice to see you took the time to put this table together in their honor.

Candy and everyone,

Seems like we all have veterans in our families (my brother and nephew) but even if we didn't it is so important to stop to remember and honor the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform. Your table has done so in a lovely way. Like everyone else I love the symbolism of the helicopter, and the proud rendition of the red, white, and blue reminds us of why they serve.

Candy, Your table is a wonderful tribute to our veterans. My Dad was a WWII vet and wounded in Germany, DH served the Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis.and DD was in the Military during Desert Storm.

What a grand tribute to all our special heros. I love both the plates and the napkin fold is very smart looking. My FIL is a WWII vet and we are so proud of him.

Very nice table, Candy, you sure find just the perfect things on your "treasure shopping" trips. I enjoyed hearing about your DH being a helicopter mechanic in Vietnam. Mine was an airplane mechanic stationed in Thailand, and also served on the USS Myles C Fox aircraft carrier. We are truly blessed to have so many men and women willing and dedicated to serve/protect our freedom and the lives of so many people. How great that you created this special table to honor your DH and Veteran's Day.

Karen, T & P's for your Dad. I hope all went well.
Punk, I got that runner at ARC for .35c !! I'm always looking for different ways to fold the napkins and this seemed to need the silverware to "nestle" in.
Jeanne, yes the flag plates are Kimble.
Jane & Magpie, since my DH is a vet, it seemed necessary to include the helicopter to honor him.
Nana, Frou, Lynne, Luvs, & everybody else,
We should all be very proud of our veterans and what they hve done for our nation!! Thank you doesn't seem like enough for their service, but it will have to do for now.
