Suggestions for a fancy light over tub?
Comments (4)Huh. Interesting. I thought lights in showers needed to be approved for damp areas, but I didn't know that about a tub. And, I just picked out the chandelier I'm going to hang over mine. =) I never use a tub so if the fear is it will fall in while I'm in the tub I have no worries about that. Vanity lights aren't rated for damp areas, are they? So why would a light over the tub have to be I wonder? And yet I think the light in my laundry room is damp rated. Hope someone else addresses this. Ohh... just found this: The National Elecric Code states: 410.4(D) Bathtub and Shower Areas. No parts of cord-connected luminaires (fixtures), hanging luminaires (fixtures), lighting track, pendants, or ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans shall be located within a zone measured 900 mm (3 ft) horizontally and 2.5 m (8 ft) vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold. This zone is all encompassing and includes the zone directly over the tub or shower stall. So much for my pendant idea... :(...See MoreLight over the bathtub
Comments (3)In our master shower we used a 6" recessed light with a flush, frosted glass trim. It is flat, flush with the ceiling, and very unobtrusive. (From Progress Lighting) In our second bath, which I am about to re-do, I am probably going to go with a combination fan/light that I just discovered... it LOOKS like a regular 6" recessed but also has a fan built in. I really didn't want an ugly fan unit on the ceiling, so I am super excited about this. Maybe it could work for you too? Comments (5)You can find no shortage of photos of it, and so it must be acceptable in some areas. Codes vary from state to state. It would be quite disconcerting during an earthquake, but probably not any more dangerous, although the water could splash out of the tub. Certain light fixtures are designated as being for wet areas, and so you would have to find a chandelier that meets that standard of safety. People have hanging fixtures above sinks. I think the chandelier should be out of reach when you are in the tub, and then it will be more difficult to clean and change light bulbs. Make sure you get one with LED, if possible, and then you shouldn't have the change the light bulbs as often. Lars...See MoreHeads up: Fixtures over tubs and building codes
Comments (21)The idea is to prevent someone who is standing in the tub from slipping and in a panic movement, grabbing a light fixture that is suspended over the tub and perhaps pulling it off the ceiling. ZzzZZZZzzzzZZZZZZAAAPPP! Okay, that scenario never occurred to me because the kind of fixture that I would like to do wouldn't provide much of a handhold for me. I love the bling of this one from Pottery Barn but at 11" tall with 8' ceilings, it wouldn't pass the 8' clearance between top of tub and ceiling requirement. But for me to reach it while standing in my tub, I'd have to stretch tall, which would be difficult to do while falling. I also like this one and it's a better compliment to the bathroom sconces (and also much more likely to get DH's thumbs up, he's not a fancy chandy kinda guy) plus it's wet room rated. But it also wouldn't pass the 8' requirement even though it's only 8" tall. Beautiful bathroom, dhygarden!...See MoreRelated Professionals
