Terry Love and the other plumbers over there really don't like the Class Five...maybe this is better but the class five itself is problematic. Are you considering Toto at all?

Class 6 or not, I wouldn't buy another Kohler toilet again. Last year, I made a mistake of not going to Terry Love's website (I was too overwhelmed) but relying on the "formal" reviews instead. Folks on this site voted for Toto but I did not listen because I really liked the looks of Kohler and bought two - Santa Rosa and Cimarron. Big mistake!!! They both clog - not as bad as the old ones but nevertheless... Everything the reviewers say about Cimarron on Terry's site is true.

It is not hard to guess that for the master bathroom it is going to be only a Toto!

I have indeed been considering Toto and, in fact, have been planning to get the Toto Ultramax for the master bath, and Toto Drakes in some other bathrooms. (Unfortunately, I have way too many toilets to buy pretty much all at once; if I screw this decicion up, I will have screwed it up eight-fold!) My decorator keeps pushing Kohler, so I thought I'd go with that(Cimarron and Santa Rosa -- yikes, eleena!) in a few other bathrooms. I have been so confused. Actually, I was planning to get one of each of those first to see how we liked them for a couple of weeks (Cimarron is Class 5, and Santa Rosa is Ingenium). I have indeed looked at Terry Love's site (that's why we're getting Toto in places), but not sure whether I should use those everywhere, considering I have not ever seen one in person before. Back to the point... this is why I thought these Class 6 ones would be the perfect combination. Help!

well, starfish, I'd say to stick to your guns and don't let yourself be pushed into inferior toilets unless your decorator is saying she'll come over and unclog them for you. It's your house, you get to make the choices.

Totos are sold at the highest end plumbing houses around here. I can't believe a decorator would not know about Totos. That's her problem and hey, maybe you're giving her a free bit of education? :)

So, while I have you, flyleft, what would be your recommendation for a one-piece, relatively quiet, non-clogging Toto with plenty of water surface area and good bowl-cleaning action? Thanks!

We have 2 Totos (Sanagloss Drake and an Ultimate). But I'd be more open to looking at others if we had to replace again now. See below for the ongoing CA Urban Water Conservation Council testing results (tables sorted by mfr or rating are the smallest files to look at).

It's interesting- I'd probably agree with them that the Drake seems to do a better job than the Ultimate (maybe due to the flush mechanism, maybe b/c of the tank height on the Drake).

And I'd look at a Toto Aquia today (dual flush). FWIW, our Drake came from Homeclick on a weekend sale w/o any problems. YMMV.

FWIW, we have Class 5 toilets from Kohler and so far so good. The problem I've seen with them is true--they don't fully wash the bowl. Some spots don't get much or any water, and that can mean more frequent cleaning. But we have not had one clog yet (except when my wife dropped something in there and it got lodged incorrectly). They also needed some adjustment after a couple of weeks. But they are far better than our older Kohlers.

I'm probably going for the Drake, just because I'm cheap, but the Ultramax looks great too, and cleaning (and installing) the one-piece is surely worth the cost. What are you concerns about Toto? Might you want to get one in your house and give it a "test drive" before you order all of them? It would only be a few weeks difference, and you'd have the comfort of personal experience backing your choice...

Yes, I should get a Toto and try it out -- better order today, since it seems to take a while (Kohlers, other than the new ones, appear to be in stock, even at Home Depot). heimert, these new Class 6 toilets are like the Class 5s but with an allegedly much better bowl rinse, so perhaps that would address the issue you raised. I guess it's too early for anyone to have info on these yet.

While Toto and Kohler do have decent products, the very best performing toilets in the industry are American Standard.

The Cadet 3 out performs both Kohler and Toto hands down and has a fantastic bowl wash, and a 5 year warranty! Then, there is their Champion 4 which has a 2-3/8" trapway and a 4" flush valve which are the largest in the industry and is "virtually clog free"! The Champion 4 has nearly twice the performance of the Kohler Cimaron or Toto Drake, has a 10 year warranty in a commercial application, a 20 year warranty in a residential application, and is better priced than Kohler or Toto.
