URGENT! Last minute change to giant tower on vanity. Pls help!

Hi all,

We are nearing the end of our bathroom reno. and though it's been slow we are mostly happy.

Today the storage tower for our vanity came. IT'S TOO BIG! What was I thinking! They did make it too wide, so the guy said he will resize it to whatever I want. My husband hates it. Doesn't understand why we need it.

The idea was for it to look like an old piece sitting atop the vanity, but I had them make it to the ceiling so no dust would collect. From the pics, you can see the sconces will be on either side. Tiling will complete the wall as in the rest of the bath and there will be approx. 20 inch wide mirrors set in the tile below each sconce.

This is basically for cosmetics, electric toothebrushes and razor and smaller toiletries. I do have a lot of makeup but it's def. too big. What should I do???

Below you can see the tiling in the bath, through to our walk in closet, and the last pics show the too big tower on the vanity. I do want something there, but should it just be like a regular medicine cabinet, maybe 7 inches deep and NOT to the counter or ceiling? Or should I let it sit on the counter but only have it be as tall as the door frame?

It does seem too big. Will you have enough drawer and cabinet space in the vanity to put makeup, electric toothbrushes, razors, etc. if you do not use the cabinet?

What is to the right of the vanity? Can you take another picture and show us that? Were you going to put doors or open shelves on the cabinet? I could see how you want this especially if storage space is a consideration.

Wascolette, to the left of the vanity is a linen closet, and there is a bank of 4 drawers in the center of the vanity. I DO have a lot of makeup, but could probably get by making this more shallow.

To the right of the vanity is the door to the bathroom and then a private WC, with a wall in between. This wall (5 feet or so) will have a large mirror inset in the tile.

BTW I cross posted to home decor b/c that gets more traffic.

It's true the LED strip is a little bit brighter than we would like at night so we might try to find a way to diffuse it a bit. But we love the fact it goes on everytime we walk in & turns off after 5 minutes of no movements in the bathroom. That's a great thing about Angie's list. I always tell providers that I found them through Angie's list & I'm not shy about telling them that I always post reviews there. For the most part, they make sure I'm really happy ;-) canuckplayer, I know from the rendering it's hard to tell but my tower is 15" above the counter. It's really easy to access the space under. Just like it's easy to access the counter under kitchen cabinets. My DH didn't put things away before because he had no where to put things other than on the counter. Now he will have lots of storage over & under the counter. Everything will be very easily accessible. Hopefully I will get the wallpaper delivered & installed by the end of this week & the mirrors also. Once the wallpaper is up then we can installed the towel bars & magnifying mirrors next to each sinks. Pictures coming soon :-)

When the word McMansion is hurled as an epithet, it comes from those who seem to genuinely hate the idea of people having the freedom to live as they wish. They are often the same ones who decry middle class flight from urban areas, and wring their hands over the alleged harm of urban sprawl. It is an attack on middle class prosperity, and against families in search of better schools and child-friendly spaces. Those who cry McMansion are every bit as contemptuous toward a subdivision filled with 2,000 sq ft vinyl clad homes with fake shutters and small, newly planted trees on 0.15 acre lots as they are of 4,000 sq ft homes on 0.35 acre lots, and of any size houses built on 2-to-5 acre lots. They don't like when the houses look the same; they don't like when a new house doesn't match the character of the older houses in the neighborhood. They don't like infill lots being developed. They are furious when an outdated 1,200 sq ft home with a leaky basement, decaying plumbing, electrical fire hazards, and cramped rooms is torn down and replaced with a more spacious, energy-efficient home designed to accommodate life in the 21st century. Why, oh why can't the middle class be herded into high-density urban communities, where they can provide a meaningful buffer between the rich and the poor? Why can't they be forced to endure a cost of living so high that they will forsake car ownership, and feel pressured to limit their family size? Why can't they just cry "uncle" already, and confess that the lives of hipsters, bohemians, affluent empty-nesters, and fashionable singles is superior to the middle-class aspirations of suburbanites?

I have no experience whatsoever with detached retinas, so I will happily get the thread back on track with an update! I don't think I participated in the original honesty thread, so I was about to do that now, but I JUST cleaned up the kitchen before sitting down to browse GW. Our house usually a giant mess (although, admittedly, the kitchen is the cleanest part usually), so this seems a very dishonest honest picture: The empty space above the sink will eventually house some dramatic and colorful art, and we will at some point get a backsplash and glass in our cabinets (hard to see, but all the uppers on the far left wall next to the fridge are waiting for glass). HOWEVER, that is a currently fully-functional kitchen right there, and that is true as of two months ago for the first time in FIVE YEARS. (I laughed ruefully at the comment about who expects a remodel to take a year. Five years and counting here due to some major life and remodeling surprises making for some seriously non-linear progress!) Needless to say, achieving function in the kitchen was the big accomplishment this year. By next year, we hope to be truly done with all remodeling, which still includes: painting/staining all the doors finally finding door knobs I can live with staining and installing the baseboards and door trim everywhere figuring out a backsplash I can live with and installing it designing the glass inserts for the kitchen cabs and getting them made/installed installing floating shelf in the kitchen finishing some touch-ups and trim pieces in the kitchen figuring out a fireplace surround design I can live with and getting that installed finishing the bathroom vanity drawers installing vent covers everywhere figuring out why the fire alarms keep going off, fixing that, and reinstalling them figuring out why the outlet behind the TV is not working going through what remains of our storage/remodeling items, paring then down severely, and finding permanent homes for the rest of the items hanging curtains and pictures! And though I'm not sure non-kitchens are relevant, honesty is, so here is what happens if you pan slightly right from the first picture: And even farther right: :D We are finally painting all our closet doors, and as you can see, everything in the living room has been shoved aside to make room for our saw horse painting set up. Also as the eagle-eyed among you may have noticed, the cat is a fan of our giant pile of remodeling stuff: My husband's and my original plan was to finish remodeling and then have only normal furniture and no piles of remodeling stuff in our living room, but now I am not sure either of us is cold-hearted enough to take the cat's tower of stuff away from her.

I forgot to add that we went with a smaller undermount sink so that counter space wouldn't have been eaten up with a larger sink cut out, otherwise I am sure that it would seem as if the tower was too large for the space.

Jujybean, I got just about the smallest sinks I could.

My sink bases are 20 inches and my sinks are 15x12. Looks like you did round sinks. Offhand do you know how wide/deep your tower is? It doesn't seem too big or deep. (MY vanity is about 60inches wide total)

can you recess it any? that would give you more storage but not be overly obtrusive.

i have a 6 inch deep med cabinet & it's really nice, but wouldn't take the place of something like that.

Toadangel, can't recess it due to electrical and plumbing lines. DO you find the 6 inch deep enough? We do have a full linen closet and the 60 inch vanity (with 4 drawers) below so it's not crucial we store so much in there.

Lax, my sinks are actually oval, but they are 17 x 14. The vanity is 72" with each sink area being 27" and the tower is 18"

Ahh, that's why you have more space. Your vanity is a foot wider than mine.

I think you can keep the vanity to ceiling storage. I think it just needs to be much shallower, say only 5 inches deep. More like a very tall medicine cabinet. This way the areas around the sink don't feel like they are in a cave. The shallow depth does limit storage but with the height you can have lots of small shelves. You can never have enough storage! I learned that the hard way.

Thanks. I had to make the decision so I went with it 18.5 wide and 6 inches deep. The width will make it in line with the inset drawers below (not shown). Fingers crossed!

i don't do a lot with make-up, but i do find it much roomier than a traditional med cab. it is nicer for wide things... like i keep a whole q-tip container in there & it fits fine, whereas before i had to transfer some into a smaller container every so often & keep the larger pack in a closet. i also can keep more meds/vitamins in there, since they fit more to a shelf now. other things, like deodorant & lotion & brushes still take up the same amount of space as they used to, since they are used daily & can't be "layered" very well with other things, at least for my use. i like to be able to grab without thinking in the morning :) and if i have something behind my lotion, etc., it will be in my way when i go to grab it & make me mad :)
