E-mail SPAM question

I don't know if this is quite the forum for this question, but I do need some help. I a sure we have all received warnings about a 'new' virus, being transmitted by e-mail and we are told not to open the e-mail to just log off. I now am faced with something suspicous - a message in my In-box without any information in the 'sender' field; an indication of 'Probable SPAM' by my security program; a garbled subject field; but I am now faced with the question: How do I get rid of this e-mail without opening it? To my knowledge, I have to 'click on it' to delete it. It seems to me that by doing so I am 'opening' it. I have never really thought about this, and now I am faced with it I don't know what to do. Any advice/direction will be appreciated. Thank you.

Northerner.
