Tile repair help...missing underlayment

Mr. Weedy was asked to replace a couple broken tiles in a friend's kitchen. Here's a photo of the floor with the tiles removed.

The one in the lower right was well-adhered to the Ditra (it's not the waffle Ditra, assuming this style is an earlier version?). It was cracked along the seam in the Ditra. Ideas for how to ensure the replacement tile won't crack again? He hasn't yet gone down in the crawl space to look at the floor structure from underneath.

The one in the top left had obviously been replaced before, and the first time they pulled it out, they cut out the Ditra. Here's a closeup of the opening, and of the piece of unknown underlayment. It's kind of rubberish and bendable.

The question on this one is what to do about underlayment when putting the replacement tile in. Would a 12"x12" cut-to-size piece of Ditra work, or not, because little pieces don't cut it? If not, what would work?
