Kerdi Shower Pan

Clueless here...thought I was ahead of the game in purchasing a Kerdi shower pan, but I got one with an offset drain and now my tile guy is wondering what to do about slope? It's all pops and buzzes to me, but I thought that the point of the pan was so that you wouldn't have to do the slope/mud thing??? Any quickie answer will be greatly appreciated--thanks ahead!

Why did you get one with an offset drain? Is it because you are replacing a tub with a shower? You are right that the slope is built into the Kerdi shower tray, so I also don't understand your tile guy's question.

I don't either, unless your drain isn't located where the foam pan "WANTS" it to be located. If that's the case, return the foam tray, and have your installer just use the drain, and mud to it, instead. I've done more Kerdi showers than I can count, and I've yet to ever use a foam tray or curb once.

Concrete is still fluid after it has been placed. Even if you screed/trowel it to a perfect slope from perimeter to drain, it can creep a bit during the initial cure. For showers on slabs, I recommend having them box out the shower area, place a secondary box around the drain stub out, and pouring a dropped slab in that area, with the secondary box keeping concrete away from the drain stub. Then come back a few days later and do a drypack preslope on top of the dropped slab. I'd never count on a concrete crew to build my preslope. And do not Kerdi the walls until after the concrete crew is long gone. Do it before hand and you'll have concrete splatter all over the Kerdi and maybe a couple of dings in the Kerdi too. "...allowing 3/4" for Kerdi, thinset and tile..." Kerdi with bedding thinset is about 1/8", thinset to set the tile is about 1/8", and typical tile is maybe 1/4" +/- thick. Mongo

phylhl, your bathroom is beautiful! I am in the final planning stages of a master bath renovation myself, and I have some questions about your bathroom. In a previous bathroom update, we used the same Rohl showerhead as your handheld, but as a fixed showerhead. I find that it is almost impossible to change the functions. It definitely takes both hands to do so, but even then, it is extremely difficult. I called Rohl about it and they said it is supposed to be tight. Are you finding yours difficult to change? I see something in your shower that looks like a hook--? Just below the decorative panel and in front of the bench. Is that what it is? And is that a towel bar inside the shower on the half wall next to the shower door? If so, what is the material and make of the towel bar? My husband and I both use washcloths and I am struggling with what to hang them on in our shower. I want everything to be pretty, but it also must be very functional. I am having a hard time meeting both requirements here. :) Last question: is that a Rohl country bath toilet paper holder? Have you had any problems with the TP hook falling off the wall trim piece? The one I used in my other bath kept falling off. Rohl replaced it twice, and I finally gave up and had a handyman glue the hook onto the trim piece to keep it from falling off all the time. You got it, toyota! :-) I do not have any concrete trowels, floats, etc....any recommendations for the shower pan on what size and type of tools work best When I do a shower pan, These are the hand tools I go in with: >12" (give or take) flat trowel (or wood float) for packing the drypack >18" finishing trowel >a series of small straightedges for screading and pitching the mud. In your case, I'd want a 4', a 3', a 2 1/2', and a 2', as well as one about 12-14". Sounds like a lot, and you may not use all of them, but for a shower the size you're doing, I usually do (use all of them), even if it's minimal use. Now, you don't have to spend the money for actual straightedges. If you go down to Home Depot, and get a 1x4 and cut it down into the sizes I listed, that's all you need. >2' and 4' (preferrably) wood levels (could take the palce of those straightedges) That should do ya. As for mixing, a deep wheelbarrow and square nosed masons shovel should be all you need. Oh-- don't forget atleast 4-5 5 gallon pails!!

There's 2 of us, and we do like to shower at the same time. So we think the length will be good. I'm glad to know 36" depth could be fine. I'd like to put a tiny wooden teak bench at the far end as well, which might help the space look "filled" when it's not in use, and be useful for shaving with.

I have a quesiton ot your point along similar lines
i am planning on doing a renovation of an older "custom" shower
the floor measures about 37x58 with a diagonally centered drain.
the quesiton is how does one go about doing a kerdi shower wihtout the pan- do you just use the membrane and drain?

Exactly. Install the membrane on the walls, install the drain, mud the pan, Kerdi the pan from the walls to the drain, and WAA LAA-- you're ready to tile.

My son researched the Kerdi pan, bought it and wants to install it himself. My brother is a self-employed professional tile man for 30 years and he doesn't recommend it.

On one hand my son is willing to try something new and on the other hand, a pro doesn't want the liability of a failed shower pan and prefers the tried and true.

So, does the Kerdi have the 100% track record to last 50 years; half of its claimed lifespan?
