New daylight saving time change

I just assumed (maybe wrongly) that I could change my clock and everything would be ok (Win 98SE). Suddenly I'm hearing about potential computer problems on the nightly news.

Does something have to be done other than just setting forward the computer clock?

Well with XP Pro there was an update that handles that, not sure if there was one issued for 98 SE... The only problem I can see is that you'll have to change it a second time when the old Daylight Savings Time date comes around and do the same thing come fall...

Just double click on your clock on the taskbar, click the second tab and remove the tick to update automatically. Windows 98 has no more updates so you can just do a manual change in a few days from now.

Thank you all for your insight...These are all good reasons, and I inconveniences that I wouldn't have thought of. I'm glad to finally get the other side of the story. I personally wish that they would just pick one time year-round and stick with it! In answer to Hoptown's questions: Most city dwellers would be considered late sleepers...I get up at 5:00am, and I would expect that most people around here and in Washington get up about an hour after me. Technically explained, the Government's Daylight Savings Plan is based on shifting the "wasted" light in the morning (while they're sleeping) to the evening, when they can clearly use the daylight more productively, spending that valuable time riding around in golf carts, drinking martinis and brainstorming about important new laws to pass. And the savings doesn't stop there. By not having to turn the headlights on, the golf carts obviously do not have to be re-charged nearly as often, resulting in a $1.2 billion* dollar savings in electricity annually! (*Adjusted for price-gouging.) So you can see it's a simple, yet brilliant plan. And, if the Government says it saves us money, we should believe them...They've never lied to us before, right? ;) Take care, all.

Oh no! I had no idea either! And though I like DST later in the year, and I LOVE SPRING and am soooo ready for it, it's just now getting to the point where it's light at a reasonable time in the morning here! Now it's going to be dark an hour later. On the bright side, for me anyway, is that I start work at 5 a.m. and it's dark then anyway, and would be until later on in the season even if we didn't start DST.

Changing the clocks doesn't bother me at all. But I intensely dislike Daylight Saving Time. Seems like the day never ends when it doesn't get dark until almost 10 o'clock at night. I do understand why working people like it, though. For reasons I can no longer remember, (if I knew them at the time), Texas stayed on DST all winter. It was awful for the kids, going to school in pitch dark! And I think of that whenever year 'round DST is discussed. I would think adults could deal with less daylight in the evenings if it meant greater safety for the kids. One friend of mine said she likes DST because she doesn't like driving home from work in the dark. How is that worse than driving to work in the dark? Plus, my body operates on Standard time all year, regardless of what the clocks say. Rusty

When does it start again?

I'm a Hoosier who just first got to start enjoying DST last year for the first time ever.

Second Sunday of March. I listen to too much news. According to the newscasters this change will cause countless software glitches.

I believe that there is a setting in XP, not sure about prior Windows releases, where you check a box and the computer will not adjust automatically to daylight savings time. I think I would check this box and manually adjust the time setting when the day comes around. I would think they would have a patch out that would address this issue soon.

Ross, in the February MS updates (second Tuesday of the month) there was a patch issued for all versions XP. Don't know about the other MS operating systems.
