John I use the terrific free program "1st page 2000". The link to the download site is below. You can set the level of expertise to suit yourself from easy, normal or expert. I have used this for 4 years now, they did withdraw it from circulation once they issued "1st page 2006" but for some reason have made it available again.

I had seriously considered buying the 2006 version but so far have read a modest few adverse comments that lead me to wait for a while as I am very happy with the 2000 version.

Give it a whirl, you will not be disappointed. There are 2 very minor flaws I have found. One is that you cannot right click on a blank page to paste, you need to use Edit/paste. The second is the table maker which I rarely use anyway but it sets the width you specify as the height. Two very minor irritations. It comes zipped at 5 megs.

I thought I would give this a try. The web site says 1st page 2000, but when I try to download it I always end up on a page to download Front Page 2006. It turns out to be a free version of 2006 with a nag page. You have to purchase the paid version to get rid of the nag page.

Pardon my ignorance...but what is a 'nag page'? I think I'll give it a go unless it's something really awful.

Bob and John, I am sorry about that. I did wonder why they brought 2000 back, now I understand, they are trying to promote the purchase of 2006 of course. If either of you would like it and care to send your email address to earoles at canada.com - removing the spaces and replacing the at with @ of course I will gladly email you the zipped file. It is almost 5 megs just so you know the size.

John a nag screen is where reminders are constantly popping up reminding of the greatness of the program in question. 2000 has no such limitations

Thought as much...found a free 'nagless' version elsewhere and am looking through it now. Does it let you make the 'webpage' then does it convert it to HTML automatically? I like that sort 'o thing.

Yes this program creates your html web pages John.

You might consider listing the site where you found 1st page 2000 in case others would like to download it too.

Open the program and double click in the open area and you will have the most basic of web pages. It shows the 'Head' and 'Body' sections and you simply move on from there.

When I was in my early days of html I found it useful to find simple web page and 'borrow' the code by right clicking on an open area of the page and then clicking to view the source code. This I copied and pasted into 1st Page 2000 and moved sections apart to see how they were created. Start with finding the opening tag of a table, place the cursor in front of it and tap your 'Enter' button 3 or 4 times to separate it. Same at the end of the table ending tag to move the other things down away from the table or. Then you can study the structure of the table - or which ever section you are digesting to see how you might work with your own page.

You need not type in any coding if you use the tables at the left side of the screen. If you want a headline for example be sure the cursor is where you need it and double click on the H1 to H6 in the left margin. Look near the bottom left corner for tabs to show various offerings in the left column. Same thing across the top, you have numerous options to use.

I'm with owbist on this one.....
My son, who doesn't do WYSIWYG has 6 or 7 websites he coded using HTML/XHTML and says he "borrows" non encumbered code from everywhere possible. According to him, it's one of the best ways to learn to code better as you can see get and use and compare the borrowed code and learn how what and why the (his words) "elegantly coded" and poorly done pages too are all put together and work.
The daughter on the other hand seems to think code has something to do with some fellow she read about in school named "Morse", but she does have a lot of really nice shoes to choose from!

Do these tools you're recommending ("1st Page 2000" and "NVU") write web pages that are accessible on all browsers? Though it is not often mentioned, a very important part of web site design is accessibility by all. When you go to a site and it says "Best viewed in Netscape n.n", you know it was not written with that in mind.

I wrote my site with straight HTML and Notepad (no WYSIWYG tool) and I'd like to find a tool that would let me use either one. Both of the above sound great and I bookmarked them to explore later.

I've made myself a page now using 1st Page (looks OK too) but now I have another question. When I save it to a file...all I have in the file is a 3kb html file. How do I get it to take all the pictures across to the website as well?

I tried to answer here last night but my reponse had stuff too close to html so the site after 3 tries shut me out. Hopefully we can do better today.

John if you created your index page in the usual way and it is a small page you would only have 3kb. I assume you created sub directory inside your web folder called 'images'? If so those will show separately and not impact the size of your index.

Have you uploaded this to your web space? - if you have that created yet

Jen you could always install 1st page 2000 and then open your web page in it to see the effect. Another thing you might consider is to install Firefox and Opera, both are free. That way you can view your site on different platforms checking to see if it looks correct

Thanks owbist for presevering with me. On the web folder there is an image file but normally I just use index. I tried putting the jpegs in the image folder but they still show up as broken links.

Did you mean an image file on the server (this is the one I said I had) but there's nothing in my computer folder except the 3kb file I mentioned. Should there be jpegs in that folder? There used to be when I used Office.

Oh, OK. On a smaller web site it is alright to have your images on the index page but as your stature grows on the web and the site gets bigger you may find it harder to keep track.

If you create a sub folder inside the folder where your index is you can then place all images in it. This way if an image becomes a standard on all pages (like your personal logo) it is easy for each page to be directed to the image folder rather than have to upload to each page. Then when you do the img src bit you would put 'images/' in front of johnny.jpg

Try to also get into the habit of using the 'alt' feature on the end of each image, then if it is not visible the text you placed as the 'alt' will show so you know which image is missing. Plus others who elect to turn off images have a text message telling them what they have missed.

Looking good Johnny. To force your external links to open on a separate page do this. I need to be careful not to look like html or they will throw me off again like they did at the start of this thread.

At the end of you a href statement add target="_blank" fo each external link and you will be set.

One note if I may be so bold. You have set up the page so that your active links are underlined, great. No problem there but you also have the second line down and the phone number near the bottom underlined and they are not links. Minor point but it might confuse one or two folks.
