Electrical walk-thru Not needed
Comments (14)I wonder if it would help to find someone with experience in lighting design. A friend of mine is a designer with a certificate in lighting. When we speak about lighting (ambient, task, etc.) I start to realize how much I don't know. And good lighting can make a big difference. A few hundred dollars for someone to review your electrical plan and do the walk through with you could be money well spent. (OK I'm guessing on what the cost would be, but I think it would just take a few hours of their time.) In addition to lighting, you'll want to pay attention to where light switches are. Are they handy when entering and leaving a room? How about when the room has multiple entrances? Do you have 3 way switches? Dimmers where you want them? Outlets where you need them, e.g. for TVs hung on the wall or on built ins? Under cabinet lighting in the kitchen? Outlets on backsplash or plugmold under cabinets? Does your kitchen have an island and if so, outlets on it? Outlets in pantry? Charging station somewhere? Probably many more considerations I haven't thought of. There may be threads on this forum with good questions to ask. Maybe you have planned for all this, but even so, being at the walk through would make sure that everything you want is in place....See MoreJust did electrical walk-through
Comments (6)Mskitchen, I have a spreadsheet, too. I used the spreadsheet to make the maps of lighting on my floor plans (plus assistance from a lighting designer). I can't imagine having to go back a 2nd day to do more! Lzerarc, we're working with allowances for the fixtures. But the electrician went through the house before we got there and marked what was included in our contract for the wiring. And he was showing us where standard/code outlets were going in case we needed to add more. It was much easier to see it in real life than on paper. So we did have everything included in the bid as per code, basically. We did consider furniture placement (had that mapped out when we did the house plans!) and decorating. Kymike1, that's a good idea to have a switch for the overhead lights! However, in our bedrooms we'll have ceiling fans (with or without light kits) that have remote controls. We can then mount the remote in a cradle near the bed for both fan and light control! Chisue, we completely forgot pendants and electrical outlet discussions on our island. I think that was one of the last areas we were looking at and we were so hot and tired we were rushing. I've gone back to the builder and asked about both of those things. And yes, we have security lights and the electrician did suggest putting a light switch in our MBR, which we thought was a brilliant idea!! Thanks for the support, everyone. :)...See Morewhat do I need to know/do for cable/fios/wireless network?
Comments (2)CAT5 is simply a designation for a kind of wire typically used for computer networks. I don't know about FIOS but AT&T's Uverse can also use it to transmit a signal for television. COAX is a type of wire used for television transmission exclusively. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have COAX run to every room you're likely to have a television in and CAT5 to every room you are likely to have a television and/or a computer. Wireless networking (for computers) is just that - no wires. It's often called WiFi (pronounced Y-fi). The obvious advantage is that you don't have to run wires anywhere. The disadvantage is that it's often not quite as fast as a wired network. WiFi is less secure than a hard wired network and susceptible to interference....See MoreI know what I need to do, I just can't bring myself to say goodbye.
Comments (37)I'm so sorry. I was in your shoes this time last year. I knew our almost 13 year old German Shorthair Pointer was at the end of his life, and I was thinking I'd wait until after Christmas, but I realized that I needed to do it the right thing for him even though it was hard for me. We put him down on Dec. 17. :( I probably waited a bit too long, and I didn't realize how much stress I'd been under thinking about whether or not it was the right time until he was gone. There was almost a sense of relief. Missing him wasn't as difficult as wondering and worrying about whether or not I was doing the right thing. We all still miss him terribly, though. When the time comes, I highly recommend getting a vet to come to your house. It was so peaceful and less stressful than taking him to the office....See Morehoosierbred
