Questions about Avast

I have Avast (free version) on my new computer (windows 7, Firefox) and am very happy with it. My daughter just got a new computer yesterday (Windows 7) and she is getting ready to install it too. The latest reviews on the updated version of Avast are not good! Is there a way she can download the older version? Or should she just go with a different antivirus?

I suggest she go with Microsoft Security Essentials. It is both anti-virus and anti-malware and has worked perfectly for me. All I do is look down in the notification area to make sure the MS SE icon is green. It updates itself and if there is a problem it turns red. Usually that means it missed an update so you update it manually.

Hi jannaz, Two helpers have asked you about Service Pack 3 and for good reason. Without Service Pack 3 installed on Windows XP you will not be getting automatic updates installed as they are issued. Using a computer without these updates is quite a security risk. Lets verify you have Service Pack 3 installed. Please find the My Computer icon on the desktop, can't find it there, click Start and in the start menu look for My Computer once found, right click on it when it opens choose properties. It should say windows XP SERVICE PACK 3 under System. What does yours say?

yes you will need a cd for sure. The exe is the actual executable for the program that is what you will need, you will put it on your old pc and double click it to start the install process. I agree I would definitely get the free version of superantispyware and use it as your number one scanner for antispyware it is the best free one out there right now. I use an old version of zone alarm pro it does not update either but it works like a charm and is much less bloated. Several of the tech folks I know use some of the older versions just because they are lighter and still work fine. I know some day I will have to get a newer version but till then I love my old one. I do have a cd stored with all of my programs on them just in case I ever need to do a reinstall, I have them readily available. here you go this tells you about the i (VRDB "Virus Recovery Database" icon) Avast I think you can drag the i into the A icon to combine them, I am not using it right now so I don't remember but I bet someone here does. That merges the 2 icons which is what they generally suggest. ok found this on the avast forum "Since the ' i ' icon would be infrequently used it makes sense to merge the two avast icons. Right click the ' i ' icon and there should be an option to merge the icons. When the VRDB is running (depending on your settings) the icon will break out and rotate whilst working, when complete it will merge again, so no real lose there."

I read the complete review, and I fail to see just what you mean. In fact, the new UI is mentioned as being easier to use than the old, and I have to agree with that. The final sentence goes on to say that Avast is the best free AV program available.

Now, I do use Microsoft Security Essentials on my Windows 7 laptop, but I have Avast version 5 on my desktop, and I find both to be top-notch.

I think Lydia is talking about the user reviews. None of the recent ones have been very good. Of course, there were 900,000 or so downloads of Avast in the past week. If you can call a couple of dozen negative reviews a fair sample.

Yes, I was talking about the user reviews. Overall they were good, just a lot of the newer ones were negative.. that's what scared me.

I went ahead and told her to download the Microsoft Security Essentials since I've had 2 people here and one on another forum recommend it.

I answered you on the other forum. Some people with windows 7 64 bit are having problems. I put AVAST on my husbands 7 64bit and it works great even the latest version. But MSE is fine too.
