I have seen information that moth crystals (PDB) not naphthalene, can be used as a fumigant to help control infestations of peach tree borers, but not for voles. What do you mean keeping them off? Voles eat the roots of trees and shrubs, and the bark of young trees if snow piles up around the trunk. A hardware cloth cage will keep them off the trunk of young trees. Keep the mulch and grass away from the trunk in the fall and winter. There is rodenticides that can be used, but probably are restricted use pesticides.

I have gardened all my life with pets - dogs, cats and even bunnies. And many other gardeners I know have done the same. Except for the bunnies, my pets have always had free range in the garden after outgrowng their puppy or kitten stage. And aside from the cats sometimes chewing grass, they have never bothered any plants. Pets are just not interested in eating plants or plant parts.....unless they are bacon or tuna flavored!! The point of my comments is I doubt you have anything to worry about. The vast majority of plants we grow in out gardens are toxic to some degree if ingested in quantity, not just bulbs or bulb foliage. And yet, there are very few instances of pets being poisoned by consuming any of them (small kids, yes, especially with berry plants). This is more a concern with pets being kept indoors and munching on houseplants out of boredom or dietary issues.

It depends on what kind of backing it has. If you haven’t heard of the knuckle test, try this. Pull the rug back to expose the reverse, with a bit of pressure, rub your knuckle across the underside. If it feels as if it’s going to tear your skin then it needs a pad. Otherwise it should be safe. I always but wool rugs that are hand tufted. Every one I’ve bought has the same type of reverse (consist across different manufacturers). I do not use padding with them currently. However, a more important question would be do you remove your shoes at the door? As with regular carpeting, sand and debris can make its way through the weave and if left unchecked I would be surprised if it didn’t cause scratches. I pull mine back and sweep underneath regularly. You’d be surprised how quickly stuff ends up there. Anyway, please see my pics attached.
