Touchpad problems

Hi - I haven't been on in ages so I'm not sure if anyone I used to know is still here. But maybe someone could still help me. I have a Dell XPS M1530 laptop & the touchpad keeps working at the same time the mouse is connected. I have tried everything including system restore. The restore seems to fix it for a while & then it starts again. I can't even find the control for it any more & I know there was one. Please help. Thank you.

Customizing the Touch Pad

You can use the Mouse Properties window to disable the touch pad or adjust the touch pad settings.
1. Click Start , and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Hardware and Sound.
3. Click Keyboard.
4. In the Mouse Properties window:
*click the Device Select tab to disable the touch pad.

*Click the Touch Pad tab to adjust touch pad settings.
1. Click OK to save the settings and close the window.

Hi Zed - I remember you. Thanks for the quick response. There is no device select button. Just both listed. When I highlight mouse & click OK. Touchpad never goes off. If I highlight touchpad - there are no options to disable it. My warranty expiered so Dell is no help. When I type my hand hits the pad & everything gets messed up. Any other ideas ?

I found this in Help and Support. In the Control Panel open Accessibility Options Icon and click Mouse Tab and than Setting. To move the mouse pointer by using MouseKeys If you have not already done so, turn on MouseKeys. To turn on MouseKeys, open Accessibility Options, click the Mouse tab, and then select the Use MouseKeys check box. Use the buttons on the numeric keypad to move the mouse pointer. If MouseKeys doesn't function, press NUM LOCK, and then try MouseKeys again. To move the pointer horizontally or vertically, press the arrow keys on your numeric keypad. To move the pointer diagonally, press HOME, END, PAGE UP, or PAGE DOWN on your numeric keypad. Notes To open Accessibility Options, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Accessibility Options. To specify whether NUM LOCK must be on or off for MouseKeys to function, on the Mouse tab, click Settings, and then for Use MouseKeys when NumLock is, click On or Off. To change the pointer speed and acceleration when using MouseKeys, on the Mouse tab, click Settings, and then move the sliders to adjust the pointer speed and acceleration. To temporarily increase or decrease the pointer speed, on the Mouse tab, click Settings, and then select the Hold down Ctrl to speed up and Shift to slow down check box. cg

Jerry I bought an Acer convertible laptop/tablet and the finger control does not work well at all, it did a first but not now. I am off to buy a mouse today. I couldn't even find a way to turn it off without goggling. LOL I installed the classic shell so I could set it up and customize it . After I do that I am going to use the W 8 start screen and learn it. It is is quite a change working without a right click and I keep reaching for a mouse. I did Google a bit and found a way to right click, takes two hands. I haven't found a way to toggle between the shell and w 8 start page yet. Will work on that after I get a mouse.

It is just a way of saying it is going bad. For some reason like you and don said the key pad is not transmitting through the closed door. You can buy a new keypad or take a small gauge wire and cut and splice it into the end of the antenna on the opener and run the wire along the ceiling all the way to the front of the garage and see if it works then. Seems odd but for some reason when I install external recievers the remotes work fine and the keypad does not until this is done.

LOL Now there's Rube Goldberg at its best! Congratulations on thinking! I can't tell you how many times I've "rigged" things to make them work. Especially on junkbox computers with all their proprietary parts. Duct tape, hotmelt glue, cable ties, you have a new partner... meet nipples! Thanks for the update! I don't have an answer for you, but I find it interesting that my 6 year old HP laptop has a very simple solution, An on/off button just above the touch pad! Wonder if HP is the only one thinking again?

most laptops have a toggle on one of the top F keys that show the touchpad which if you click it you turn the touchpad off and on. That is how mine are.

Thanks all for your responses. I couldnt get on this site so sorry for late response. Problem was that the icons for touch pad seemed to have disappeared - even in the control panel. Everything had vanished which made me suspicious so I ran every scan I had. It took an Avast boot scan but it turned out there was a java trojan on my pc. After deleting all I could then system restore back to January & everything finally came back fine. Of course I am not exactly sure what I deleted but it said something about an app file so I am hoping it wasnt too impt. I see "infected" & panic & start deleting whatever it is. Thank you all again for your help. Everything seems fine now. Debbie
