Physical Switch to turn off touchpad, who knew?

Yesterday my 6 month old Gateway W8 17" Laptop suddenly stopped responding to the touch pad (called ELAN in the Device Manager Dialog box of Mouse). I used the keyboard to shut down, reboot gave no change, the ELAN did not move, or even show, a pointer.

I hooked up my wireless mouse and it worked fine. I entered the Mouse dialog and "unclicked" the disable ELAN when mouse is plugged in.. still no ability to use the ELAN.

I contacted Gateway Chat, got a fast response, within a minute and after a few minutes of explanation followed by a few minutes (under 5) of off-line research the tech came back and told me to "toggle" the ELAN. I replied: "What is a toggle".. well that took another couple of minutes of research by the tech (at least I must not be guilty of not reading instructions) and he said "operate F6".. I did and the ELAN returned to normal operation. Who knew??? Even the tech had to do a couple of minutes research... SO I SHARE IT HERE.

This may be unique to Gateway but I suspect it is at the OS level, that is at the W8 level and the Device Manager application...but, WHO KNOWS, I don't.

Hope my learning is of some value to others.

While we all prefer trouble free operation, Great Technical Support is the next best thing. That is why I usually come here, but this time I went to Gateway as the computer is still under warranty.

That's good to know. I just got a Gateway NE56R with Windows 8 and I'm learning :-)

What are you using for antivirus? I just uninstalled Norton and installed Avast Free.

Pam by default Windows Defender is installed, I have nothing else on mine.

If you bring up the Start page and just start to type Windows Defender then click on the Defender box that will show top left you will bring up a window similar to the MSE window.

I bought my first home FSBO, a long time ago, and it was a very good experience and we became good friends of the seller. When we sold that house, we sold it FSBO. The buyers were out looking with their realtor and saw our sign. That house was on the market about 30 days. Our next house (one we built) was on the market, off and on, for 5 years, due to the very high interest rates. We tried to sell it ourselves and had interested buyers who would have bought if we had an assumable lower-rate mortgage. Our next house we bought through our realtor who sold the second house. When we sold it (the third house), we had to fire our realtor (a different one from the one who represented us in buying it, who was fixated on a buyer we had no interest in selling to - he lowballed us, was "going by the book" and we just knew he would walk for some reason as he showed no real "love" of the house) and advertised it ourselves and sold it four days later (to a couple who "loved" it). Our first realtor represented the buyers as a buyer's agent. Our next house we bought, out of state, through a realtor. But we sold it ourselves, in 45 minutes to the first couple that looked at it. If it's a good house, in a desireable neighborhood and priced right, and you feel comfortable doing all the work (but be sure to get a real estate attorney to look over all your paperwork before signing), go ahead. We are going to sell our present home, which we love, to build a smaller home and be mortgage free. One huge difference from before - the internet. But, we are going to go with a flat-rate site and pay a buyer's agent commission, if necessary. We have talked to realtors and have one picked out if our house doesn't sell in 30 days. A very similar house a few blocks away just sold a couple of months ago so we have a real good comparable. I've had negative experiences with realtors. One that we bought a vacation home through was almost a crook. We made an offer (we didn't have a buyer's agent - he wouldn't deal with them), told him it was our top offer, and he called us and said, "wouldn't you know, someone else who looked at the place earlier has offered more than you." We said, "fine, guess your seller will be selling to them." Twenty minutes later he called and said we had the condo. We sold that condo a few years later to friends of some neighbors without a realtor. That sleazy realtor owned one of the vacation condos and had most of the owners snookered into thinking he was the best realtor to list it as it was near a wilderness area and not near any urban areas. He would just put a sign on the highway and never marketed it to people in Seattle (about 100 miles away) and, when the Canadian dollar feel (most buyers were Canadians), the prices of the condos tanked because it became more expensive for Canadians to buy. In all of the cases (4 out of 5 sales) when we sold FSBO, we were able to save realtors' fees and were able to price the house accordingly so it would sell quickly.

I don't mean to hyjack this thread any further but I'd like to quickly share something that I found fascinating since we're talking about leg braces. The leg braces that were made decades ago were mostly made of strong steel/metal and leather for durability. They were quite heavy to wear. Although, growing up wearing one, I got used to its weight. Currently, the leg braces are constructed with light and strong materials such as titanium alloys, plastic, etc.. It all began when this material was used for aerospace. Basically as I was told, it started when titanium alloys was used for the space shuttles. Being light and strong, titanium alloys began to be used for medical products such as wheelchairs, arm and leg braces. What a break through. When I first wore the new model leg brace, I had to learn how to walk all over again. Being so light, I didn't need to kick or use as much effort to walk with the new leg brace. LOL, I had to keep having to adjust my balance. It was certainly a heavenly moment for me. Plllog, you've heard about the connection between women and shoes? Well, when I learned that I could use any shoes I'd like (well... not all types), it opened up a whole new world on me. It was like a heavenly door opened up and an endless shoe styles shining from one end to the other. I went nuts about shoes for awhile and learned which shoe style worked and which didn't with the leg brace. Then, it was the colors, and which outfit should they be worn with, and etc., etc.. It was fun and frustrating at the same time... but mostly fun. Seriously, being disabled isn't all bad. I can write a whole new books of fun & learning experiences that happen to people with disabilities, or with a challenge, and wouldn't normally happen to people without. More than enough to keep me out of feeling pity about it.

Surely, there is a way to shut off your water. You need to shut off the water to change washer hoses, work on sinks and toilets, etc. Locate your water meter. There should be two shutoff valves, one in the feedline to the meter and another in the water line leaving the meter that supplies the house. These two valves are needed to change out the meter. In my town, meters are changed out every 10 years for calibration and/or updates. In my state, there is a 3rd shutoff not accessible to the homeowner and it does require a special tool. This valve is buried at the lot line where your supply line connects to the city or association supply. Its at the lot line were city/utility employees may turn off the water without entering your property and do not have to get a court order. About your washer hoses. Trace your washer hose from the back of the washer to its source. Normally, these hoses (hot and cold water) are connected to a faucet or valve and may be behind the washer. A nice installation places these valves above the washer so they can be reached without moving the washer.

My son-in-law is a pharmacist and he's well trained in the Medicare supplements-so you might suggest your friend speak with a pharmacist as well. Might be the easiest route given the craziness of things in the world these days. I'm not familiar with Utah, so I can't recommend other areas, but is it possible for him to find a PCP outside of his community? Especially since he's healthy and knows his own health, a drive might not be a bad idea if it makes it easier for him to find LGBTQ friendly providers. I'm sure there are providers in the state! As to not being allowed to wear PPE-I think that's been the case in a lot of places that have been slow on the uptick in dealing with the social distancing. The west coast primarily is on the forefront, I know in Oregon we're about a week behind California in the stay-at-home orders and school closures, etc. I noticed that many of the retailers that are open here are limiting the number of people who can enter the store, as well as installing sneeze guards at registers. Stores won't bag your groceries if you bring your own bags either. We even went from having gas station attendants to temporarily pumping our own gas, in order to limit exposure for those employees.

I use and have used for years Avira Free.

Following owbist advice I find on my system W8 Gateway Windows Defender is ""off" because I have another anti virus running. I believe on my W7 and XP machines WD and Avira both run.. but "who knows", he says again : )

WD and AVG have been configured for real time on this Vista system since the day I opened the box. Installed Windows updates will occasionally disable WD, but a couple of clicks and it is right back on.

The Control Panel has an access to WD.

Thanks, I need more "tips"... looking in Control Panel I can not find any access to WD. I figured it would be under the Security tab, couldn't find it there.

DA, are you saying you believe W8 should also be able to run both Avira and WD?

My W8 machine is set to automatically install updates.

Jerry I bought an Acer convertible laptop/tablet and the finger control does not work well at all, it did a first but not now. I am off to buy a mouse today. I couldn't even find a way to turn it off without goggling. LOL I installed the classic shell so I could set it up and customize it . After I do that I am going to use the W 8 start screen and learn it. It is is quite a change working without a right click and I keep reaching for a mouse. I did Google a bit and found a way to right click, takes two hands. I haven't found a way to toggle between the shell and w 8 start page yet. Will work on that after I get a mouse.

I just got a new mouse,, think it was 12.99 at bestbuy with free delivery. Logietech m325 wireless laptop mouse. Cool little mouse with a tiny little usb wireless device .Once got it adjusted and me adjusted to it.. love it. 18 month battery supposedly, single aa alkaline.

I bought a mouse at BB because office max was not open and I was anxious to get back to W 8. I told them about the finger pad and they said to return it and they would replace it. The clerk told me how to turn it off and that is what I will do. On this acer I use the f7 key with the FN. The touch part will still work. When they release the upgrade for W 8 I will uninstall the classic shell before I install it. I hope it is better than shell. The laptop/tablet is really neat and very fast, especially at start up.

My Lenovo laptop .. I installed the generic Synaptics driver from the Synaptics website. It allows you to disable the win8 features .. the funny acting new win8 touch stuff. Fn+F6 enables/disables touchpad or you can permanently disable from the user profile in control panels mouse settings.

Since it is the same platform I think it would be a strong maybe. I can't see why a trial would hurt anything. The worst a user would have to do is start in Safe Mode to disable WD

I can't find any sign of WD. It doesn't show in the Control Panel list of programs nor in the CP's dialog box to turn processes on/off. Looks like I have to download from MS.

Emma/Mikie, the multi-function touch pad in W8 is one thing I like. I have most of the features off, but I use the two finger scroll like a wheel mouse's wheel. I purchased from Amazon a wireless mouse for some very low cost (don't remember but I think less than $10 shipped to my home) it is a nice mouse but when using a laptop am usually not in a good position to use a mouse.

Jerry my touch paid is above the keyboard so I have a problem of not being able to rest hand on anything. Doesn't work to well to rest it on the keyboard. That is the only fault I found with this PC. For people who rely on the touch pad it will be uncomfortable.
