Not compatible!

Can anyone explain to me in simple terms what it means for a program to not be compatible with Vista? I think that is ridiculous and I cannot understand it.

My school has a terrible grade program, and has spent ions of money for a new one next year. A grade program is used in almost all schools anymore, and it is its own program. How can it not be compatible with Vista or anything else. I don't understand.

As far as I can tell, I can go to almost any shoe store, clothing store, or anywhere else online. What does it mean that it is not compatible? I should be able to type in the name of the program, go to its web site, put in my name and password, and access. Microsoft is huge and so is Prentice Hall or Pearson. How can a huge publishing company not be compatible with Microsoft? or Windows or whatever? It is downright silly.

What does it take for giant companies to allow entry?

Does anyone understand this?
