better to replace bad kitchen cabinets, or offer credit?
Comments (25)I would look into Ikea cabinets. Here's why: Buyers who really want a drop-dead gorgeous, chef's perfect kitchen probably know they'll need to renovate to get exactly what they want. But in the meantime they need to live with what is there. Your current kitchen doesn't sound liveable. When someone has a poorly maintained kitchen it casts doubt on everything else in the house. The logic is, "If they let the kitchen go to hell, imagine what the furnace & foundation & everything else looks like! This place is probably a money pit." There is only 1 kitchen in a house. This makes it tougher for buyers to remodel because unlike bathrooms, where there is often a bathroom to use while the other one gets torn apart, there is no "other kitchen" to use during a reno. This was my logic when we chose a house with an updated kitchen and 2 outdated baths. I really think a decent Ikea kitchen would be a smart investment for you in the current situation. And it can be done reasonably cheaply if you can invest a lot of time. The Kitchens forum here has good examples of people who've used Ikea boxes and doors from another manufacturer if you don't like the look of Ikea doors....See MoreAnyone incorporate vintage cabinets with new?
Comments (14)We have a 1916 house, and it had the absolute cheapest Menard's-type cabinets that you could imagine (put any weight on the cabinet shelves, and they sagged an inch or two). Awful! Twenty years ago when it came time to remodel the kitchen we found an entire kitchen of 1920s cabinets that were being pulled out of a local mansion. Paid $500 for the lot of them. When we saw them they had been pulled out and were siting in the dining room. The house was dim because the electricity was off, and I thought they were natural finish. Turned out they had a glazed, painted finish. So, I stripped, stained, and finished them. We worked with the layout of our kitchen and the cabinets we had bought to come up with a workable configuration. Then, we hired a carpenter to custom build additional cabinets. These I also stained and finished. We salvaged the hinges and knobs from the old cabinets that we weren't using and put them on the new cabinets so they would really match. Twenty years later, I still love the cabinets and they look great. I'm on this forum now because we've been doing some updates to the kitchen--new countertops and some new appliances. The other big plus to using something that is original to the era of the house is that on down the road a few years your kitchen will not look dated. Now that we have new soapstone and marble counters and have half of the appliances replaced, my kitchen could be one that someone put in a remodel just recently rather than one that is definitely considered out of date after twenty years. My sister has a 1920s house and she did EXACTLY what you are talking about. Her kitchen is quite a bit smaller than mine, so she really had to squeeze things in, but it works. The most difficult thing for her was to find antique matching hinges and cabinet pulls. Do it!...See MoreVintage custom cabinets-keep or replace?
Comments (17)Agree with pal, either embrace them or move on. The cabs look to be home built in someones garage, those are just applied plant on moldings on veneer slab doors/drawers, nothing fancy or special about the construction, although well executed. While perhaps nice at the time to someone, I don't see any heirloom value in them. And yes, those hinges date them as mid '60s - mid '70s, as does the tile....See MoreConcealed and exposed cabinet hinges
Comments (3)Our 50s cabinets have exposed hinges, some of which attach to two doors - the gap between the doors on the face frame would not allow two hinges to fit side by side. I don't know if such hinges are still made....See MoreRelated Professionals
