Gateway Laptop

Just bought one and printed material is very sketchy. Is

there a source for me to read that will explain how to use

it. I am basically a novice. Sometimes I don't even know

the questions to ask. When I called 'customer support', they

said the machine is 'too new' to have that information on line. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

What model are we talking about. Do you mean a new machine was shipped to you and did not have a User Manual. I have never seen a laptop of any brand shipped with no user manual.

Okay. You guys are great. Clearly the collective wisdom is not to throw money at the problem - but figure the problem out. Owbist - in my thread on not connecting my husband's vista laptop to our network, I tried quietly, methodically to troubleshoot the issues - to no avail. I found lots of similar frustrations on google - but no solutions that worked - and I think I tried them all - at least to the best of my ability. thanks for those great, easy-to-follow instructions to transfer to an external hard drive. He'll want to do that anyway - even if he keeps this computer. This computer guy is pricey - but where I am in DC they seem to fall in the $125-140/hour range - and they can usually fix a problem. Others that charge $40-75 - that the uninformed think are good - but their know-how is less than what I find here. I tried a few of those locally recommended guys - and they accomplished the simple tasks but also made mistakes I had to hire the more expensive guy to fix. My main complaint with him is that he's wedded to his biases - he hates Vista - so his recommendation is usually to avoid or ditch it. Our struggles with Vista seem to often be how often we're blocked from things or performing simple tasks have all sort of obstacles - for "safety's" sake. Thanks to everyone for pointing out that Windows 7 is just a revamped Vista. I got my first issue of Smart Computing and they were tauting it and described some features I thought I'd love. DA - if W8 is in process, is there any indication of what it will be like? Probably worth waiting for - or at least waiting to hear more about how Windows 7 is panning out. So I'll keep plugging away on my other thread to get him connected. If I don't succeed by Tuesday, the computer guy will come and fix it. I guess we'll stop there. Thanks. Lynn.

Is tosh short for toshiba? (smiles) I have been wanting a laptop for YEARS but $$ problems keep popping up and I don't want to buy a cheap one just to get one. I want one that I will use more than my desktop. Right now I am tossing around the Gateway and Toshiba wondering which to buy? I have had wonderful luck with Gateway desktops but think laptops are a whole new ballgame as they are crunched together in such a small case. "Have air, will breathe". Right now I was bouncing back & forth with the Gateway P series or NV (17") and am leaning towards the Toshiba A500-ST6647 Core I7. So much to have to know before you take the leap! So hard to buy site unseen as I will have to order it.

Very disappointing isn't it. I did a random search at the Gateway support pages and it resulted in a 106 page .pdf. But of course, to have one in your hands, it means printing the 106 pages. But you can download/save the file to your computer and open the file at any time to read and use it. I have done this many times and it works okay.

ohhhhhhhhhh wow I thought you meant things you printed from it were not printing good.

yes we need to know the model of the laptop and what version of windows is it running?

Be sure if it is brand new to get the windows updates as soon as possible like immediately because there are some that are extremely important recently.

What are you using for antivirus on it and is is updating daily and are you running scans regularly? What about firewall if it is Vista do you have the firewall enabled as it should be?
You will also need good malware programs to keep the bad stuff away.

Gateway has a download for the user manual... mostly Vista how too's

And a Reference Guide... tells about the notebook hardware. Jacks and slots etc.

you probably would prefer to make some changes to your Vista to make it more like xp was so it will be more familiar to you, you can google " vista look like xp" and find several tips and tricks. or search on this forum I have posted many links in various threads.
