Bought my first laptop ..

Yep .... I'm finally in the 21 st century !

(embarrassed smile )

It's set up as wireless ... battery length is 3 hours.My question is about the battery . I don't know how often to charge it . Should I wait for the battery warning to come on -- or should I plug it in after every use ?

*AND* on the average - how long can the battery keep being recharged ? This is Gateway laptop ... ($500)...one of the cheaper ones. Where can I get a new battery ?

I apologize for the stupid beginner question .... I'm an Old Dog that's TRYING to learn new tricks ! LOL

since this is a new laptop I have to ask what have you set up for your security programs? Even new laptops are sometimes behind on updates so be sure you check for those windows and other updates.

please ask any questions you have that is how we all learn! There are no stupid questions, I assure you someone else has wanted the answer to that same question at one time.

this site is a big help when setting up a new pc or laptop, one easy place to get all those needed programs and they make sure you don't get any of those extra pesky toolbars etc.

I definitely would not get the celeron processor. Go for a better rated processor. I am an AMD fan prefer them over Intel but everyone has their own preferences. on the router make sure you change the default user name and password to the router itself and give your wireless network a very strong number/letter mix passphrase or use one generated by the router if it will do that (write it on a card and tape it to the bottom of the router not blocking any vents). Be sure also that you have enabled WPA2 encryption in the router setup so that your wireless is safe from those passing by or near you that could other wise jump onto your network. My router is a linksys G router and I have a 4000sqft house, I can use my laptops anywhere and get an excellent rated signal, I can go out in my yard and get the same, my neighbor can see my network from his house and he shows it as a strong signal, of course mine is locked down so he can not get on it as is his, I see his from my house which has 2 bars.

The portability features are exactly why these days I am using my tablet almost exclusively. I don't remember the last time I used my netbook or laptop. My husband does use his laptop every morning but in the afternoon or evening he has his tablet at his recliner and I have mine at my recliner. We read so much more now and it's so easy to carry along. That's why I decided to jump on the bigger version. And no worries about it getting hot or blocking the vents none of that to worry about. Enjoy your new birthday toy!

"For the vast, vast majority of laptops, all you need is an adapter. If you want to be extra sure, look at the little box which is attached to the power cord of your laptop. Somewhere on the little box, you should find a line which says something similar to "Input: 110-220v" - this means that the laptop can accommodate current coming from the wall from 110v (the North American standard) all the way up to 220v (the UK/Ireland standard). Thus, all you need is an adapter to modify your two-prong plug to match the three-prong outlet."

If you have elec. available leave it plugged in, use same as desktop PC, use battery when no elec. near..and it's still a good idea to use a chill pad under it.
