Purchased a refurbed Dell, I need to transfer everything!

I have a little HP Mini 1000 but just ordered a Dell with more RAM and better goodies including a CDRW. Now, while this little HP1000 works okay, it is on its last legs and I wanted to get a bigger laptop anyway.

My problem is getting the info from the little one to the bigger one. What cords do I need, and can someone walk me through it with baby steps?

If it is just pictures and files etc, why not get a flash drive that fits in the USB ports...just transfer the files etc from your mini harddrive right to the flash drive, safely unplug the flash drive and put it in the new computer..Suggest getting at least a 8GB flash drive..something that you can alway use later..cords, not so much

I agree I use flash drives a lot for moving files from one pc to another or as a back up. Especially with a mini since they do not have cd or dvd drives to make copies.

If you have them networked you can do the transfer through the network.

On ebay you can find a device I like called a disk drive 'rack' or carrier. You put it in like a floppy drive, on the other 1/2 you put in any disk drive. Then you can plug in the disk like a floppy and run it anytime you want to look at the drive. This could be something for $14 that would help you to move files from old , hard drive, to a new one $60 for 750gb on amazon. JDMADERA has the disk racks for serial (SATA or parallel) or you can use an external hard drive, or any drive with an external adapter $14. I personally like the reasoning of buying a new drive to put all my files on it. I get a new drive, I copy my old files and test the new drive for a while before I commit to it , and have the chance to sell my old drive while having a backup. Another idea: If many files are text based then zip or RAR them and mail them to yourself. Many mail sites accept 2mb up to 20mb mail attachments. That might handle most of your documents and that way you have them backed up. It's a secondary backup.. you should still have them somewhere else but one site I use has been good to me for 5 years, for free, holding 40mb of stuff. Linda, be cool and things will be just fine. You will not get a shock, the computer is at risk from you and static electricity. Everything inside the case except the fans and hard drive are less than 3.5 volts. Fans and hard drives are 12 volt. Remove the power cord from the back of the case before attempting anything inside. Then always rest your bare hand or arm on the metal frame of the computer case to dissipate any static electricity that may be present. The advice to remove both old sticks and insert both new ones is absolutely correct. Just make sure the small slot in the bottom of each stick of RAM is centred over the proper spot on the motherboard and listen for the click as each end clamp pops up to hold the RAM in place as you push down to seat them. You should not have to push the clamps in, they will pop in once the Ram is fully seated.

Anything is possible at BB. The first one I took back had a corrupt hard drive the second developed so many problems that a very qualified award winning certified Microsoft volunteer who has followed that old computer suspects this is what happened. As for the new one I had to replace. Costco concierge service did diagnostics on the phone with me and came to the conclusion that it needed to be returned because the operating system was not responding at all and perhaps the hard drive wasn't installed. It was plugged in and had a friend go through all of the plugs as was asked of us by the service. I took out all of the sockets in my place and had them replaced to meet the country wide code and also bought new surge protectors for my computer. I also have not put in any Microsoft software. The more I read the more I am not qualified to put it in and take care of the problems that most likely will ensue. I called a Microsoft store. There is a central phone bank in Texas that answers for all the calls that come in to the stores around the country. They could not get the store near me to answer the phone and suspected they were all busy. They tried three times as I stayed on the phone. I am not allowed to have the direct number to the store. There are many menus and the idea is you can help yourself by listening to these menus. I want to know if I can bring my PC and buy some software and have them install it.. This can all cost about the same price as my computer. I would like to talk with Bill Gates. The stores have also got bad reviews around the country. There are some excellent ones too but din't reign. I appreciate the idea of not wanting to go through a learning curve for both an operating system that people complained about so vehemently that they made one revision that will help me but then you have software that is either a rental package or a package deal that has difficulty with Outlook That's okay if I have step-by-step instructions or near an IT person which I always had at work. I should have given more detail. The Win7 is probably not legitimate. I bought the old desk top several years ago on craigslist. It appeared to have been used in a business environment. It had/has Win7 Ultimate, but it was originally an ME machine. It also had MS Office. After ~1 year, I got messages that the MS Office needed renewing. Eventually, I went to my computer guy, who I guess has purchased bulk copies of various office sweets etc and also upgrades and retires old computers, presumably/perhaps moving their liscenses. He got Office reset. Last year, I had a problem needing his help and he told me that there were now indications that the Win7 ultimate was potentially not legal, but that he didn't have any copies of Ultimate. I'm not sure why he didn't set up a normal Win7 that I assume he has. A month or two after this, I began getting the Windows not real messages with the black screen.

If you are not sure how to "transfer files with a flash drive", just do a google search for it...probably will have pics and everything

OOh no.. unless it has software for transfering files that specifically came with that cable .. dont use that. You might burn up your usb ports, or worse.

You could get a free DropBox
which is a online file/folder share system, Holds 2gb free... share a foler from one or from both pc's ???
or simply upload your files to it & download from it to the new pc.

If you can put both online at same time.. www.TeamViewer.com is a fairly simple program which would allow you to transfer files.

Another option is to buy a external caddy for the netbook harddrive and plug the usb cable from the external drive into your new lappy and just transfer the files ..You can get these on EBay for about $5..make sure you get the right kind either IDE or SATA depending upon what type of HD is in the netbook

I really like the Dropbox idea, and it seems easy enough. I downloaded it, we will see how it works when the new laptop gets here. Thanks!

I use Dropbox everyday.. had it about a year. 7gb free so far..I only use about 7%.. a few referals & little contests & promotions they have earn more free space.

I use dropbox mostly to give download program links to people or when I'm fixing things to transfer & install programs with team viewer.

Much easier than sending someone to say SuperAntiSpyware & having them ask tons of questions. Just give a link and say install this works.

Right now their forum build is new to mobile devices.. upload via a mobile device pictures or video and get instant 500mb additional storage. Then it seems for every 500mb additional you upload, you get more space in 500mb chucks up to 5gb I read in some forum post.

They are due for a Q&A/hide & seek type contest. Last year I got 2 or 3 gb additional storage in one of those.

I really enjoy DropBox.. would hate to not have it.

another option on that line is Adrive which allows you 50GB of storage free you copy your files to Adrive to your private storage locker, then you can leave them there as a second backup and also copy them from there to your new laptop when you need to. I keep a second back up on Adrive of my important stuff. Have been using it for years with no problem.

very easy to use, 50GB is a LOT but you can purchase more space should you need it.
