Choosing a wireless router

I am buying a laptop and want to get a wireless router what,s the best modestly priced one that does a good job, any advice will be greatly appreciated. Iggie

All I can tell you is I use a "Linksys" and it works.

I use a NETGEAR WGR614, got it at Walmart. I live in a rancher. The router is on a desk in the center of the basement, and I can use my laptop in any room of the house.

"What I do not understand is why they charge a monthly fee of 7.95 for up to 4 computers." It may be that the contract you have with them now allows you to connect only a single PC and that they charge extra for multiple PCs to connect. That kind of pricing used to be more common when only propeller headed geeks had home networks, but home networks are pretty common these days, so charging extra seems unusual to me. I'd be in a bit of trouble if I were limited to 4 PCs. I think we've got 5 PCs, a Tivo, 2 game consoles, 2 handheld game systems and 2 iTouches that are all connected (or can be at various times). Fortunately, my ISP doesn't place any limit on the number of devices I connect.

Thanks all. I really appreciate your input. I'm leaning towards the Belkin N600 Wireless Dual Band router. I currently own a Belkin and have never had any trouble with it, so figure I'll stick with what I'm happy with. The downside is all of the reviews without fail mention how bad tech support is no matter what brand you get. I wonder when companies are going to wise up and realize that is one reason folks don't buy their equipment.

zep516 - Now that you mention it I have at times (but not at the same time my laptop stopped working on the porch) had modem failures and comcast told me I probably needed to have it replaced. But it works fine for about three weeks and then goes down. So i've been lazy and haven't taken it in to swap it out. Comcast isn't my fav company to deal with. pkponder - I have wracked my brain and the only other thing that I know of that has changed is my ADT system got a trouble light a few weeks ago, maybe around the same time, but ADT told me that checking their records, they haven't had a signal from my home in a year... ADT is also not my favorite company since they continued to bill me. But the security system is wired not wireless, if that makes a difference. It is connected to my Comcast phone service though. mikie - Well, I do have an older, refurbished laptop so that could be possible. There is no way to check the internal reception, is there? And windows update has messed me up on other minor settings before. I will work on the things I have control over like the modem and the ethernet cable and see what happens. You guys (and gal) are awesome.

Where do you 'hide' your printer, wireless router, etc?

We recently finished our basement and made it into both a family room/playroom and an office down there for dh, who works full time from home. We had room for a closet under the basement steps, so we wired the closet with a full out network panel, cable, phone, etc then we hardwired network jacks throughout the basement. Now the modem/router/printer/fax sit in the closet and all the PC's (hubby has several, plus the kids have them in the playroom and oh yeah, our Tivo is hooked up to the network as well) are hardwired to network jacks throughout the basement. Any pc's we need upstairs (my laptop for instance) can print or access the network via wireless. It's not a practical solution if you're working with an existing room (I LOVE allison's - that's brilliant!!!) but if you're remodeling or installing wiring, the "command center closet" is definitely the way to go.

I use Belkin N1 Wireless Router and have not had problems with it either. Their user friendly interface was a major selling point for me. While I have still called support to understand some things (WPA2, etc), I found the support people helpful but busy on weekends.

I use Linksys and Dlink am very happy with them, most name brand top of the line ones will be pretty similar and should meet your needs.

Couldn't ask for better service than provided by my Netgear $39 wireless g router. I have it on the second floor of my house and the signal reaches every room on the first floor and the outside back deck. So you don't need to spend a lot or buy top of the line for most home uses.

I use cable to connect to the internet, it is connected by wire to my computer(desktop). Daughter bought a laptop that had wireless so she bought a router to hook to the cable box. Computer(desktop) in son's room is hooked to the router and cable by a cable run through the ceiling from living room where my computer is to the bedroom just a few feet away from where my computer desk is. Computer in son's room is Hubby's computer but both he and oldest son and grandson share it. I shared my computer with Hubby until youngest son got that one for his dad at this past Christmas.My computer uses Windows XP Pro , daughter and Hubby's computers us Windows Vista. None of the computer have had a problem connecting until one of the cable end connectors broke where it plugged into the cable box. New cable fixed the problem.
