I have majorly messed up!

I had made some changes like removing Adobe Reader, installing new PDF programs, changing authentication warning levels and making some changes to my internet options. The changes didn't fix the trouble I was experiencing, so I did a system restore to sometime back in October. My old problems weren't as bad as the new ones so I decided to restore. As soon as the restore took place I tried to use my Dell Bluetooth keyboard, and I couldn't type anything. This message appeared:

Error in pairing with Device Dell BT Keyboard

Reason: Authentication failed, try pairing again.

I have no idea what to do, except that I put new batteries in the keyboard. Since I couldn't enter any text on my PC I fired up my laptop, which insists that a connection is unplugged and there is no network available! That isn't true because I am now typing on my netbook, which found the network immediately. Also, my Kindle WiFi works. Can anyone tell me what is wrong? I did another system restore to another date and neither the laptop network problem or the keyboard problems are fixed. Can anyone tell me what to try next?

You appear to have more than one issue but lets start with the keyboard. With Bluetooth (which is a wireless technology, but different that WiFi) you need to "pair" devices, essentially saying that you want the to work together. On the bottom of the keyboard is a button, press it. Hopefully that will do it. Otherwise you may need a wired keyboard to use temporarily while you set up the Bluetooth connection.

before you do anything if you are not satisfied with any system restore it is just as easily reversible so go now and do the reversal.

I would not go back that far in time on a system restore you have done many many windows updates and other updates in that amount of time. If you made recent changes that you think caused issues then go back in time for those changes.

but always remember that a system restore is just as easy to reverse but always do it quickly.

Beth.......... You have my greatest sympathies. Gardening on multiple levels has felt totally impossible from the beginning. When I am working on one level, the weeds are thriving on the other levels. Argggggggh. Hauling mulch up from the street level to the gardening levels is hard labor, too. I thought it was my time management that was the problem. The problem is that it is incredibly difficult for one person to manage all of that work. Then add the heat we both experience and it just gets overwhelming. I did check with the lady who runs our local garden center and she did say that Preen will not harm the roses. I may not like using chemicals to control weeds, but I have had to give up and use some. You have so many beautiful roses, I know this must be very distressing for you. Pembroke, Mom can't ask for something she has never seen. Maybe that is simply what she is familiar with, so that is what she wants. Even planted in March, you probably will end up with multiple but small cloves in this crop. I would still harvest, store, and replant the (largest) cloves from this crop. Use the small stuff for cooking. If you do not do this you will end up with multiple small bulbs with small cloves again next year due to the competition between the expansion of the crowded cloves from this crop. Need to get back to planting single, large cloves IN FALL this year. Hope that made sense. hortster

My situation was similar to yours about nine years ago. 1/2 acre corner lot with not much green growing but buckthorn! The woody area was filled with garlic mustard, buckthorn, different tree logs/branches (previous owners cut down and left), wild blackberries, etc. I now have all of the above gone, even most of the neighbor's buckthorns. I need to speak to neighbor about the remaining one, because I'm constantly weeding out the seedlings. Can't turn your back on them for one second. I did use round up on the larger stumps after cutting down, because if you just cut, they will regrow bigger and better. Some I dug out, some pulled out easily, some I kept cutting down, etc. I tried every method. I even hired a crew to get rid of them, but that was a waste of money. It all grew back the next year. Guess they just cut it, but didn't get all the roots. I was gullible back then. LOL. Keep up with it and you will see a difference soon. No easy way, sorry. The creeping charlie can be controlled with weed b gone in the lawn if it's that bad, otherwise proper lawn practices and reseeding the grass every fall will help. I don't like to use herbicides, so I do try to be responsible, but when faced with a neglected overrun property, it helps to use some in the beginning. Soon, you will have plenty of time to enjoy all the natives you have growing like the bloodroot and trilliums. Good luck to you. Oh, I don't know what that rampant weed is in your photo. Sorry. But if it's that fast growing, I'd be scared. LOL.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried everything and just got more frustrated. I was about to call a traveling guru to come to my house and pick up the PC, but I decided to wait because today my DSL provider was sending a tech to update my modem so I can try faster DSL for 3 months, and then decide if I want to do the upgrade and pay for it. Well, the very nice young man who brought the new modem fiddled with my PC for 5 minutes and got the keyboard working again. I don't really understand what he did, but I am certain he is a genius.

As for my laptop, it often goes for 6 months without being turned on and then, when I do turn it on it needs hours to update everything available. It doesn't imediately recognize my home network, but if I wait for the prompts it makes me choose which network I want. So, I am choosing my network each time I boot up, but at least it works. My sweet little laptop is AOK and my Kindle works fine so I am quite satisfied.

It would be a very good habit to begin to simply turn on that laptop once a week at the very least to allow it to get updates and also run scans, leaving it off that way and letting it try to get all kinds of updates all at once is asking for a conflict. The programs must be able to do their work and getting updates is essential, pick a day and once a week just turn it on and leave it be, set your scans to run late that night and leave it on. Be sure you manually update all the programs that have to be updated manually, it is just something we have to learn to do.
Run the secunia tool to see what needs to be updated and do those at the same time.
