Crunch time for kitchen range - is Blue Star door really a prob?

30' American Range or 30' Blue Star Ranges
Comments (10)Both of these ranges are All Gas, and don't have many bells and whistles. I have a Bluestar and use a cheap CDN digital thermometer with a probe and timer ($20). Seems to work fine for me, and I'm glad it's not built in. I don't think there are any better gas ranges than these. You can add Wolf and Capital and that's about it. Capital has the most features (no digital timers etc, but is available with self clean option and rotisserie). My neighbor has an American Residential range, and I have a Bluestar. I think they're both very well made. The Bluestar has big,8-pointed, Star shaped, open burners- and these are the best there are. The American has a couple extra indicator lights, a broiler that shuts off if you open the door, and 2 fans for convection. The biggest difference is that the top is sealed and stainless with iron grates. (The entire top of a Bluestar is removable Cast Iron.) If I had to do it again, I'd get the Bluestar (again). For no other reason than the top burners. BTW, both of these have large, powerful gas ovens with commercial quality infra-red broilers. They take a while to pre-heat, but it's no fault of the oven burner (30,000 BTU's) What I can't tell you is if one is better insulated than another. Comments (26)Sorry, just took a look at this thread again and noticed your question...by the time I got to Miele, I had decided on induction, so I didn't give the Miele an actual test drive. I did give it a pretty thorough inspection at the Miele place, though, and thought it was a very sexy range -- and the performance seemed very similar to the Wolf dual fuel. I say that b/c the Miele also has the stacked burners, which I really liked, but the BTUs are higher than Wolf (which top out at around 16k, I believe -- Miele was closer to 20k or so -- I can't quite remember). The Miele ovens on the 48" range were very nice -- the smaller one is a speed oven, and the bigger one is a regular convection. The speed oven wasn't a big plus for me personally, since I really wanted a steam oven as a second oven, but there are people on this forum who love their speed ovens. One thing I really liked about the Miele oven, which Wolf doesn't have, is the burst of steam option, which is great for baking (you can program up to 3 bursts of steam for up to 6 min. each during cooking). I didn't care that much about the MasterChef options on Miele, but again, others love these. At any rate, the Miele seemed very similar to the Wolf, I liked the steam option on the oven better and liked the Miele burners better (also, if you're interested in a grill, theirs was excellent and seemed very similar to the Wolf, which I think is the best in the business). Comments (8)If you do a search you'll find people on here who say the BS door is so hot if you touch it you'll burn yourself, and others who say the opposite. Barry makes a good point about the other things in a kitchen that can cause a burn. I've posted this before, but I'll do it again. I've had a BS RCS for over 2 months now. The sides of the door where the vents are get very hot. Touching those for a few seconds could potentially cause a burn, if you held your hand or other body part against it for at least a few seconds, and probably it would take longer than that. Not a likely scenario. A brief touch will not burn someone. And not much of the sides are exposed though, so unlikely to be an issue. But the door itself, nope. My door doesn't get that hot. Mine gets warm. The glass part gets warmer than the door but I've held my hand against it for several seconds before it's uncomfortable. I had a Viking range before this one and the door, the oven sides and the struts that attached the oven handle to the door got really really hot, painfully so if you touched them more than briefly. I raised two kids with that range, and no burns whatsoever. Kids learn quickly not to touch things. I wouldn't worry about the BS door at all. Comments (7)I don't believe Bluestar makes a dishwasher--it's not on their website anyway. Mine is Meile and is great except it's a bit too small. I am going with Sub-Zero for fridge (not installed yet) rather than Bluestar. While I like the all stainless steel interior of the Bluestar, for about the same price the Sub-Zero has an ethlyne filter. There are some bad comments about the lower priced Bluestar (if that was the one you were considering). I really like my Bluestar electric wall oven and Wolf induction cooktop combo. No bending over, no gas fumes, both cook great. For a hood, I'm using a Vent-a-Hood. (All these from 2017 remodel. In the process of 2021 remodel but the only kitchen item is the fridge.)...See Moretsaintb
