You All Are Such a Bad Influence! Great HL Find ( pics)

I need more holiday decorations like I need another hole in my head, but how can I help myself after joining this forum ;^P ? You all are such a bad influence on me (LOL)!

Sooooo, there I was yesterday, all over town in search of things for my Thanksgiving table. While at HL, I found ths darling little lighted Christmas dec. It was marked $19.99 but practically every holiday item was on sale for 50% off. I couldn't resist it, as I knew my 14 y/o DD would love it. She did!

I did create quite a stir getting it, though!

They were on the shelf just barely above my head, so I reached up with both hands to lift one down. Well, all the cords were unknowingly wrapped around one another behind them and . . . one pulled another one down, which fell onto the next shelf . . . which happened to be full of very fragile painted wine glasses and . . . there was a crash of glass that brought half the store running to me! It was totally not my fault as no one could see the tangle behind them and the HL people were only concerned that I wasn't cut or injured, but I was so embarrassed! What a mess.

I thought you might like to see these cute little jars. They have a small hole drilled through the backs, where the cord runs through. The light itself is one of those small volt ones that has the soft silicone flame top. It's fixed to a base that looks like a metal jar lid and glued in place. The small trees screen the base from the sides and behind. The penguins hide it from the front. The "snow" is just scooped into it. The lid has four (heat) vents in it. I thought someone might want to try making one, so I'm including a (slightly blurry) pic that included the top.

Is this cute, or what?!?

I wouldn't dismiss houzz so fast. There is plenty to take away from the bathrooms there, even if you're not working on that budget level. The use of bamboo matting as wallpaper behind a mirror, the use of multiple sizes of round mirrors instead of a big expanse of plate glass, lining open shelves with backpainted glass--there are hundreds of ideas there that don't have to cost a fortune. And a lot of what's there isn't expensive, either. The zen sinks, for example, you can get for a couple hundred bucks at overstock, from time to time if you follow them. Just in general, most people look at expensive baths to figure out their design boards, then look around the places they can afford to shop to find stuff in the same styles. DD same age, almost 10. Neighbor's daughter was bad influence. Sweet kid, but she lies and steals. She would often just pop up. I had no problem sending her home telling her that unless I had arranged with her mom, for her to be there, I could not let her stay. It was mainly the stealing and lying. just lied to get attention (dysfunctional family at home where she was daughter of mom and ex, and lil sis was daughter of mom and stepdad) and she lied just to get in trouble. BOY she killed me too. Grinning with those dimples, "What?" when caught in a lie. She is going to be way worse as she gets older. I have had long talks with my daughter about the subject, bringing up the old boy who cries wolf again. I told her that this girl lies so much that one day, when she really is in trouble, no one is going to believe her. Popi, unfortunately in my experience, trying to influence these kids is not something that succeeds, except in after school specials on TV. In real life, you open the door to a lot of real trouble. I hate to be that way but I have seen it enough. In this girl's case for example, I have no right to punish if I catch her stealing or lying. So all I'm doing is opening my home, purse, belongings, to being pilfered. In another child's case a couple of years ago, allowing them in once, led to having to feed the kid every day of the week. I know they are despareate, and in the case 2 years ago, parent left kids to watch themselves, so no parent to send them home to. I'm not sure what else to do, but I certainly can't fix the issues of all these kids in my area who have parents who should be fixing them. Once, had a kid, six years old, showed up on my doorstep. He lives in another neighborhood down the street. Significant distance for a six year old to just go off on their own. I talked to his dad later that week at school. His dad said, "Sure, I told him we live in a safe area, and that after he gets home from school, he can feel free to go to anyone's house." And then he just smiled and walked away. Saw nothing wrong with a child this small just wandering. (later that year, child who does not have a pool membership and was turned away from swimming in the pool, got mad, went out at night, snuck in, stopped up the sink in the pool bathroom, and turned the water on, and flooded the pool house. At six, he was thinking this way. So obviously he had befriended older kids with even worse influence).

I don't think I have ever been influenced by color names. Other than the most used media for my art, but they never change names other than adding new colors. Am very visual and the color itself wins, never the name. How much are we paying these marketeers to come up with names? Admission I bought a ton of upholstery fabric with the name sorghum, which looked and sounded like a long ago syrup loved. But it turned out to be a deep majestic purple rather than an amber hue. Thankfully my daughter loves purple. Not much creativity or marketing pull with the name, other than pulling me in.

Holly-Kay, I was pretty sure I remembered a pretty tight limitation on pets/animals. I couldn't find the covenants or restrictions online, but someone posted a quote limiting animals to "customary household pets." There seems to be a presumption that dogs and cats fit the description but fish, snakes, lizards -- doesn't say where the line is drawn. And ten there is a clause "except as allowed by [the regulating authority]." Well there's a loophole they could run a chicken coup through - at least a small one. Maybe I'll make some inquiries and see if I can get them to allow a small number of chickens -- though I'm pretty sure roosters wont be allowed on what are mostly 1/4 acre lots. Not sure I'd want them either. But to stay on topic -- will definitely be another reason to wear my pinafore! :)

That is very cute. And the adventure of getting it will leave a lasting memory for many Xmases to come. LOL.
But if that's all you bought, then we weren't THAT bad of an influence. When you walk away with a loaded cart, then we will have done a good job of being 'bad'.

Lynne, I love that cute little jar. Are the penquins painted on an ornament or a clay type figurine? I'm not eager to try drilling glass, but maybe the cord could just come out the top somehow. Any of you creative gals have any ideas? I felt really bad for you while reading your story--you must have just felt awful at the sound of breaking glass! So very glad you weren't hurt and that the store employees were considerate and kind. We've all had similar moments I'm sure. ;o) Luvs

It's very cute! And I had a similar experience in the CTS trying to get the white pumpkin bowls. the shelf collapsed..not my fault. DH didn't want to be near! The saleslady was nice, and only one bowl broke....

I have one someone gave me last year....and I know I have seen them on line , people made them.

Purplemoon, actually, I did come away with quite a few things. DD is decorating the hutch in the foyer with some of them right now. She's fourteen y/o, though, so it'll definitely be more cute than I would do ;^P
Luvs, the penguin figures are like a flat plastic ornament and glued to the base. You could actually use a number of different things in there. As for the cord, you could possible hot glue it up the inside back of the jar and down the outside. Putting in taller trees would hide it from the front, I'd think.
Kathleen, I know what you mean! I actually called the store manager when I got home. I told her that it was a miracle that I wasn't injured, but that it could have been a much more tragic ending if I'd had a toddler or baby in a cart right there with me. I wasn't angry at all, but just thought that she should quickly rethink how and where they displayed those. This was the first she'd heard of the incident, but she agreed and was going to have them moved immediately.

Lynn, It is a wonder you or someone else wasn't hurt when all of the glass broke. I can't imagine why they had their merchandise stacked like that. Your new Christmas jar is really cute and I bet your DD had so much fun decorating the foyer hutch. My youngest is 18 and away at college this year, but even if he was here he wouldn't be very interested in doing any decorating. He has always been very good at carrying the boxes back and forth from storage to house to storage.

Sandi, I know what you mean! My own DS is in grad school now and could care less about decorating for the holidays . . . although he loves coming home and seeing it all done! When we talked yesterday, I told him we were saving the outside lights for him and my DH to do when he gets home for Thansgiving. Gotta love that free labor ;^P
