editiong photos after being burned to a cd-rw or dvd-rw

Am I correct in recalling that CDs, and DVDs are strictly for 'storage'. and once a photo has been burned on either, it cannot be edited?

Also, I tried to delete a photo from a DVD-RW and it would not delete because it said it was a 'read-only' file. How did it become a 'read-only' file in the first place? When it says that a CD-RW/DVD-RW can be erased, must all data be erased, or can you select?

I am sorry if these concerns are really basic, but none of my friends can answer my questions so I came to you.

CDs are used for storage but executable files can be ran from them - all you programs are loaded via the CD/DVD. Yes, all files burned to CD become read only and if you copy any back to your hard drive you will need to change the name if you intend to modify the file.

I know nothing about re-writable CDs but I would suggest you erase everything when wiping it.

I haven't done it in a long time, but the rw disk has to be formatted in a special way to act like a floopy.
I use to use a program called INCD to do this.

A couple days ago I put info on a cdrw, but when adding new data, it wanted to erase the current.

With special formatting, you'll be able to add/remove or edit any data on the disk.

Search for something like Using CD-RW like floppy drive.

ok you are trying to burn to cd and or dvd and using roxio but what exactly is happening? you need to let us know what is going on what symptoms what is it doing or not doing. Have you tried another burning program other than nero? there are some very good free ones available that may work for you better than nero. This is the place to look for a great best of list here is the one for cd/dvd burning programs. Best Free CD / DVD Burning Software I know a lot of people that use the cd burnerxp and love it. I would try using another program and maybe you can get the hang of it better than nero or at least know if it is just nero that is not working on your pc, if other programs won't work also then you would have to look to your actual burner itself. Personally when I want to burn my pics to cd I just open my pictures folder hilight the ones I want to transfer right click on those hilighted ones and select my cd burner from the list to send them to. Have you tried doing that or even just dragging them and dropping them from where they are on to your cd drive letter? What exactly have you tried and not tried.

Pam do you in fact have a DVD burner installed or only a CD burner? Look at the front of the tower and it will be visible on the CD or DVD player. If you have a DVD then there should be software. However I will caution that using a DVD for photos is daunting when you need to find a photo - unless you are far more tidy minded than I am, and that would not be difficult when it comes to sorting my photos. Taking a 1 meg photo as an example you would get close to 800 on a CD. Using a 10 megapixel camera at it's highest setting creates an image around the 3 megapixel mark so you can still expect to save close to 260 photos per CD. I have no knowledge of Picassa or anyone space oriented photo saving site, I like my photos in my possession and under my control.

I have no problem with the software, have actually found one, free but limited, only 36 pics. allowed, and it re-codes,formats,etc, and plays in our 2 DVD players, however would like one that allows more pics. and also don't know how long, I can use this one before they bug me to pay for full version.. so figured someone here knew of a total free one? this one also erases or formats and writes over a DVD-RW, has very kewl transitions too, seems ashame to burn 15 mins. on a 2 hr. DVD..wish they made shorter length DVD's??

Sounds like maybe the darker color thing mentioned above may also play into it. My 2001 Grand Cherokee ( factory am/fm/cd/casette player) will not recognize burned CDs. i am currently using my laptop with XP and have tried windows player, I-tunes and BurnerXP but haven't noticed any different results from any of that different software. After going thru about 30 cds burning at different speeds and formats, I finally got it to occasionally recognize one I burnt at around 4X using PCM .wav (uncompressed) format but to recognize and play I usually have to fast forward it thru a couple of songs while it is doing the initial read. Once it recognizes and starts playing then will usually play the whole CD but doesn't always work for whatever reason. I may try the label thing or try to find some of the "dark" cds to see if that matters. We have a 98 KIA witn an aftermarket cd player and it will play just about anything burnt to cd no matter format or speed.

Thanks for your replies.

I will stay away from trying to use CD-RWs like a floppy. I did a search on the subject and it sounds like a good possibility of more trouble than it is worth. I will edit my photos and then burn them to a CD. I was trying to save some time before burning them by not editing them to a smaller size, and then later resizing them when I needed a smaller file to e-mail, etc.

JaneÂ When files are saved to a CD, they are written in read-only format. If you want to edit the file and save it under a different name, simply right click on the file, select Properties from the list, and uncheck read-only. I have no experience with CD-RWs and canÂt help you with that...
