Hi,

Not sure if this is proper to ask at this forum. Apologies if not. In my genealogy research I think I may have come across a 6th cousin twice removed. Anyway the ending of this persons email is @maine.rr.com

How can I determine where in Maine this is? Thanks.

If you have a name you can try a different way. It's been
a long time but I receieved names and location I needed at Ancestry.com

If you type in the web address - www.maine.rr.com - it takes you to an internet provider in Portland, Maine, that is associated with the national internet company RoadRunner . However, that means little as far as where that person is actually located. The person could be in Portland, or elsewhere in Maine, or even in another state using an email address that was originally set up with the maine.rr company.

I do a lot more reading these day! Books are my friends LOL I have found in doing some investigating that in all of the big hotmail changes (whether we want them or not unfortunately) they are also making some very sneaky changes and putting some peoples info out there with out them knowing it. I have zero info about me on my hotmail info so nothing to share there but here are some interesting things pointed out in windows secrets article. Hotmail's social networking busts your privacy I never look at the new today page I have mine set to go directly to my inbox so I had no idea about all the stuff that is now shown on that page. I just looked at mine and I can see lists of several people that I know and in the lists it tells who they are new friends with! I am sure these people have no idea this info is being broadcast all over the place. for those that use hotmail, windows live, messenger etc any of those you should definitely read the article and check out these settings. check in tools under accounts,select your account,Click on the Properties button. This will bring up Properties box with the General tab selected,In the white box under "Mail Account," you can change the name of the account, if you like. You can give the account whatever name you want. (Note: filling out the "Name" field and the "Organization" field is optional..) where it says display name field see if it has your name there if so you need to change that to what ever it is you want it to say like your email address. I think that is the right place, I have not used OE in years so maybe someone that is more familiar and uses it can jump in too. this may be helpful Email Settings in Outlook Express

My big peeve is when they ask for your phone or email & you decline; they give you dirty looks because they're usually younger & don't feel that it's a big deal handing your info out. Comcast automatically gives a name account like that from what I remember. Years ago; when I 1st came to GW I used SBA; then Spike made us all "join" & we rushed to figure out a unique user name. There have been times I couldn't get Roselvr- Ebay it was already taken; but managed to with both Comcast & Gmail. We lost the Capital letters a few years ago; pretty sure it was after iVillage bought it. It's the one thing that ticks me off. I wish they would have been able to fix it.

How about emailing them? Might not get a response unless you offer to share the final product.

Anyhow, I have a friend with a website that sells military gear all over the world. He tracks web viewers somehow with their IP address, so he can tell at least the locale someone is viewing from....and that's without being registered on his site or anything - just clicking and viewing.)

He apparently standard stuff that sites use to manage/track their effectiveness, etc. Once he shocked me by calling to ask about the boots I was checking out - live! While he can't track to the individual (just see the general locale), he simply guessed that it was me when my city/state popped up as a web viewer.

Homebound your friend probably had a hit counter on his web site. We leave a wealth of information behind when we leave any given site. Nothing in the privacy area but more to do with ISP and area along with time spent and on which pages and the number of times visiting (as long as we do not remove our cookies).

My webserver log files can be configured to show locations from and does show what page someone visits. You can make it generate links to the page where they came from.

Years ago if they came from a link from an email at a popular email service.. you could even end up in their email accounts if they were currently logged in ... you would be inside their email account just as if it was your own. (it was dangerious to be clicking links on emails back then, some still might be dangerious)
