Do I have enough space in kids' shower?

I am currently renovating a kids/cabana bath. I removed a bathtub and plan to put in a 30 x 54" shower w/ seamless glass enclosure.

I want to go with Kohler fixtures all mounted on the 30" wall as follows:

-Stillness multifunction shower head on 7 1/2" arm K-968

-Single Handle Deck/Mount Diverter (can be wall mounted)K-9530

-Stillness "Rite-Temp pressure balancing trim K-T9540-4

-Revival Invigorating handshower on Kohler 30" slide bar(off to the left of the fixed shower/trim K16161)

My plumber says he does not think I should do it because looking at the wall, the fixtures will be too crowded together and I'll hate it. He says wall minimum should be 36". I didn't think this was over the top in the least but I know it's also not a big shower. This is my first attempt at renovation so I am doubting myself now.

Thoughts or opinions? If anyone has a similar set up if you have pictures, I would love to see them. Thanks.

BTW - On the SH diverter - am concerned about the 1 1/4" mounting limit - between durock/porcelain tile/mud will the wall be too thick? Do I have other option?

If you have a hand shower on a bar you really dont need a shower head or diverter. Kohler has an adapter (sorry don't remember the technical name)that the hand held hose screws into (instead of the 7in pipe)that is decorative and keeps the hose close to the wall out of the way.

My question is simply "why?"

No sarcasm, it's a serious question.

The reason I ask is that you're installing two multi-function shower heads that are similar in the types of sprays that they provide.

If you want the handheld to be able to rinse the walls of the shower, then I'd just install the handheld on a vertical bar.

As to the dimensions of the shower, the 30" dimension is tight, as 30" is the minimum allowed by code.

The 1-1/4" is fine. Walls are usually 1/2" cement board. Adding 3/8th inch wall tile and 1/8th inch of thinset yields a total wall thickness of one inch.

If they're indeterminate (vining) tomatoes, do like the previous poster mentioned and put up trellises or stakes to keep your tomatoes growing upward. Prune back a lot of the side suckers on the tomatoes, leaving just 1 or 2 main stems on them, and they will stay pretty well contained. (Of course, don't pinch off the blossoms!) You will get less tomatoes per plant, but it lets you have more variety in less space (assuming they're different types). You could also transplant some of the tomatoes to separate containers if you want more room... they transplant fine. Just bury them deeper than they were in the previous spot. Also, your lettuce will mature soon enough and you'll be pulling it out by the time the other plants start taking over, so that'll give you a little more room... Lori

In my existing kitchen I have a tiny 4' island, and 2 11" cabinet walls plus the oven and fridge on another wall. I'm emptying out the wall where the oven and fridge are so I'm going down by about 5 linear feet. But I added a 5x8 pantry. As soon as the pantry was built (it was in Phase I of my remodel and the kitchen is phase II) I cleaned out all the cabinets I'm going to lose to make sure I'll be okay. it works fine for me to lose the cabs I'm losing. If you can do something similar in your existing kitchen it will give you a lot of piece of mind. If not, do an inventory of what you have now and painstakingly go cab by cab through your new kitchen plan to make sure you have space enough for everything. Good luck, Anita That pantry holds a LOT. rhome410 - Yes the wall does extend a little. There will be around 3" clearance (depending on final dimensions). The KitchenAid 36" built-in does not need to extend over 90 degress to access everything and they recommend 2.5" minimum. Appreaciate you mentioning this as these sorts of details are easy to overlook. judydel - The fridge selected is a single door. I was experimenting with a bedroom door on how you would open it and it seemed to me that you'd open it from the side, rather in front. So that would give 12" clearance between the fridge door and someone standing at the prep sink. Does that seem reasonable?

As @Lyndee Lee pointed out, these mirrors produce 300 lumens, which is the equivalent of only a 40 watt bulb. These are meant for accent lighting, not task lighting. For both baths, I recommend additional sconce lighting. Also, a Solatube is great for the daytime, but at night, the shower will be dark. I recommend additional recessed lighting in the shower. In general, for very good vanity lighting, I prefer sconces flanking a mirror instead of lighting placed above. I aim for over 2000 lumens total per mirror (dimmable) and a color temp of at least 3000k (the mirrors are 2700k).

As Mongo said, 30" is pretty tight for a shower to begin with. Having said that, I just finished putting in American Standards version of what you're looking at in my kids bath. The setup is tub/shower, so the wet wall is roughly 32". It is a little crowded, but not absurd. The biggest problem I had was fitting in the slide bar so it and the flexible metal hose wouldn't block the on off handle.

I do have pics, but right now they're all on Shutterfly. If I can switch them over to Photobucket I will attach them.

Thank you all for your comments. I am going ahead with only the hand held shower on a grab bar install and appreciate your input.

Now, I wanted to install the hose outlet just slightly higher and off to the left of the valve/trim. The grab bar would be hung to position the shower head at a standard height. I was trying to avoid the hose looping and instead having it hang down and around the bottom of the valve/trim a bit.

Hope I make sense....thoughts? Spanky, I would love to see pictures.

I do it pretty much as you describe.

I keep the supply outlet low and slightly offset to the side so that when the handheld is on the bar the hose forms a "J" and hangs nice and tight against the wall. No looping.

OK, the good news is I finally got pics onto Photobucket. Bad news is, I've got to go find Bill V's instructions he sent me on how to get them from there to here. I'll either find them in the next 10 minutes...or there in an email Bill sent me at the office which means no pics until tomorrow morning.

Just an FYI, I wanted and mounted that adjustable bar and head for a reason. We've still got fairly small kids...5 and 7...who love to take showers. Only problem is, they don't exactly excell at soap removal. As a result my wife is often helping from the edge of the tub, usually while kneeling. That height was the best compromise of reachability while kneeling and not being in the way as they get older...I have no plans of touching this bath (I've got 4 more to do!!) again anytime soon.
