It is a bit hard to see, but this doesn't look like a ton of cabinetry to me, though your pantry looks very nice. I think you should take stock of what you have and plan where things will go and see if you have enough space. Like I said, that pantry may be able to hold quite a bit and if that is the case, you may be in good shape.

In my existing kitchen I have a tiny 4' island, and 2 11" cabinet walls plus the oven and fridge on another wall. I'm emptying out the wall where the oven and fridge are so I'm going down by about 5 linear feet. But I added a 5x8 pantry.

As soon as the pantry was built (it was in Phase I of my remodel and the kitchen is phase II) I cleaned out all the cabinets I'm going to lose to make sure I'll be okay. it works fine for me to lose the cabs I'm losing. If you can do something similar in your existing kitchen it will give you a lot of piece of mind. If not, do an inventory of what you have now and painstakingly go cab by cab through your new kitchen plan to make sure you have space enough for everything.

I did exactly what nomorebluekitchen did: We were going to dispense with our peninsula, so I emptied all its cabinets and drawers, found different permanent storage for those items OR kept them in place but knew exactly where they would go in the new kitchen. Also got rid of a hanging pot rack and found storage for all those pots and pans closer in location to the drawers they would inhabit in the new kitchen. We lived for six months with some empty cabinets and drawers in order to get used to not "having" them, and we got used to the new locations for many of our kitchen items. It worked out fine.

Thanks for your thoughts. It is not alot different than the kitchen I am living in right now so I think I will be able to manage -- and my current kitchen has only a small cabinet pantry, so I think it will be ok. It just seems like it is going to LOOK small in our new house. A 9 foot wall of back cabinets seems pretty short to me. I hope it looks ok.

Where you're light would be in the traditional wall storage space for dishes. But there are lots of other options:

- People who have them seem to LOVE dish drawers. I mean, LOVE them!

- Lots of other stuff that normally ends up in uppers can go in your island in drawers, in your fridge wall, or in that fabulous huge pantry.

- You can always cull your dishes, keeping only the stuff that is functional, used frequently and attractive. That gets rid of a lot! If your 'special occasion' china is stored in the kitchen, pack it up and store it in a less-easy-to-get-to spot.

- Spices and cooking oils can go into drawers or pullouts below counter-top height. Bakeware also works well in drawers.

Bottom line - If you've got a similar space now, you'll be fine.
