It downloaded for me but will not install. "Install failed."

is this update showing as a CRITICAL update for those of you seeing it?
I have not seen it come up as a critical update on any of my systems.
If it is what windows version?

It is showing as high priority, not critical. I thought it strange that a non-critical update would be issued out of regular order. I checked and found the error number and some instructions on the MS Help site for that error. For now, I will just leave it alone as it is a HUGE download, and their instructions will require downloading it again. It is KB951847.

thank you grandms, ok good I was hoping it was not showing up as a critical update. Yes it is huge 248.3mb! has caused a few problems for some and likely due to the size. There is a stand alone downloader/insaller for it.

It is not rated as a critical update.

Geez, I let it in after reading grandms post. Figured it was safe. Had no problem and computer is working well today. Haven't put it on my other machines though.

Jane, if your computer is working well after it installed (did it actually install? check installation history), then you are probably okay. You might want to hold off on the other machines.

I was unable to download it myself but on the left of the page I noticed that there were 3 software updates and it had it for XP. So I went to where XP was and downloaded all three of them and one of them was the MS.Net Framework Service Pack 1 & .Net Family Update 3.5
(KB951847) x 86

I have had no problems with it now that I downloaded the software.

It did come with Windows Search Indexing, Is this really worth having or should I shut it off. Hope someone can explain to me why we even need the Windows Search Indexing. Plus if there is a way to shut it off how would I do that? I have Windows XPSP2.

Mine updated and installed in timely fashion...my computer shows that no other updates are available....do I need to do anything more? I see where ravencajun says there is an update available for this...I didn't do that...is it necessary since this updated and installed just fine for me and my computer is working well.....?

I would suggest going back to the windows update site have it scan and see if it is saying you need the second patch for your .net update. But from what I am understanding if you got that update originally then you will need the second patch update to fix a problem with the original .net download. It was causing conflicts and compatibility issues with certain programs which is why they had to quickly issue the second patch update KB959209. If you click on the link provided there it will tell you exactly what it fixes.

So if you got the .net update you also need to get the patch for it.

In answer to the indexing question, keep a watch on your cpu usage, the indexing service has been known to cause 100% cpu usage, if you notice that happening you can disable it.

Note: another item that is being brought up that some may see with this update, it also installs the .Net Runtime Optimization Service or CLR Optimization service. Unfortunately this can also cause an abnormal 100% cpu usage issue. If you find this happening you may find this article helpful.

so in other words to see it using 100% cpu usage occasionally is normal and it would normally do this at a time when the cpu is idle or when the screen saver is on, however the problem arises when you start to see the 100% cpu usage quite frequently or constantly. So if it is mscorsvw.exe showing the behavior it is the CLR Optimization service.

IF you see no problem happening leave it as it is!

Hmmm, interesting. I just checked my update history and it doesn't show at all. No fail, and no listing. The only thing it shows is XP3 which I have hidden.

So I don't know what happened to it, but it has disappeared. I shut off indexing a while ago. Don't remember how, I think in msconfig. I also disabled the desktop search. Haven't had either for quite a while. I found 'indexing' used a lot of resources and slowed the computer down.

I went in and disabled the indexing service and when I did I found out that I was no longer on the internet. I tried unplugging my modem and then replugged it back in and it still wouldn't work. I remembered that I had disabled the indexing service and so I went back in and set it on Manual and when I did that I was able to get online again. Would you happen to know why this kept me from going online? I am on Broadband and my OS is Windows XPSP2.

I finally hit dl and it disappeared. No signs of action on PC, nothing in installation history after 1/15/09 and nothing on bottom bar indicating DL going on. What's up with that? XP-2, IE6.

thirdfrt I have no idea why it would have any bearing on your internet connection. You are positive it was the correct item you set to disable in services?
I have known of many who have done that with no ill effects other than it may slow down your searches on your pc a little.
Maybe someone else has an idea why but I don't, sorry.

I just went to the Microsoft site following the link given by RC and downloaded the full setup file. When I tried to install, it got so far and then stopped with a notice "File is Corrupt". So much for Microsoft and their updates. I had trouble with the SP3 and the rebooting loop, but was able to download the full setup and install that and have had no trouble at all with it. Since this is not rated a Critical update, I've abandoned all attempts to get it.

I went back in and disabled it again to see if it would happen again and I was able to get on the internet without any problems. I am now wondering if it was my ISP and I didn't know it at the time. I have no idea when they are having problems or when they decide to do something because they don't post it on their site.

I did notice that it changed the looks of my search. I use to only have the search companion and I liked the looks of it and this here is just plain. Is there anyway that I can just have the search companion like I use to have and get rid of the new window? The new window is stuck and it says if I get out of it that it will cause problems. What in the world is going on with this. I never had this problem before with doing any type of searches. I disabled it but the new window won't go away. I can get the companion because it shows the dog at the bottom but I would rather it be like it was before I downloaded this thing. If you have any ideas how I can change the window back to the companion like it was before I downloaded this thing I would appreciate it very much.

unfortunately thirdfrt I do not have any tips for you, Perhaps some googling will help us find some answers but right now I don't know. I will try to do a little research and maybe someone else might give us some ideas if they happen to know.

If you were not seeing the problems with the high cpu usage maybe you want to go ahead and let it be on as it was originally? If however you were seeing the cpu staying at high usage due to this item then you are better off with it as you have it now.

I am happy to hear you figured out the connection problem was not related however because that one really had me stumped LOL.

Go to your "remove programs" option in control panel and look for Windows Search, it may be 4.0. You can remove this and see what happens, but generate a system restore point before you remove it. This is important in cause it screws something up and you need to revert back to a good setting.

For those with firefox who got this update you might notice it has added an add-on to your firefox, and apparently the uninstall option is grayed out. There are already many complaints about this and some fixes out on how to remove it should it bother you. This is the one being posted around, use extreme caution!

I am simply providing this info to let you know why you suddenly have a new firefox extension, not to urge you to do anything to it. It is unfortunate that MS chose to not provide the uninstall button.

I disabled the indexing service in Net.frame (not sure that is the cause of 100% cpu usage) should I set indexing back to manual if I decide to install Net.3.5 - Then disable it afterward. Not sure having that disabled will effect the install.
