Let's Talk Turkey

I've packed away all the Halloween and brought out the turkeys for Thanksgiving. The buffet features DH's turkey tail mount, a print from Ideal's mag., 2 little vintage turkeys from the TS, a pair of antique field glasses and the buffet is covered in an antique velvet mantel scarf, folded in half. Yesterday on my lunch I picked up the acorns at the park, I had to glue the tops on everyone, then put them in my copper GS tray. The red and gold cabinet has Victorian velvet scarf, turkeys I've collected, antique Thanksgiving postcards,and GS vase. I've got 7 of the red plates,I bought at estate auction and the gold goblets are part of a set of eight, with 2 each gold, red, green, and blue. DH bought me the turkey platter at a GS for $2.00. I painted the little scarecrow in the wooden bowl about 12 years ago. The vintage paper turkey, squirrel and glass dome all TS finds, 25 cents to a dollar. The green turkey plate was mother's, it's marked Governor's Mansion on the back, ???. It is a weird color, so I just mix it in with my green and blue in my family room. I think I am ready for Thanksgiving.

So many lovely things and arranged wonderfully! The velvet scarves add such a richness and warmth - perfect for the season. I'm not usually a fan of animal body parts (altho have a steer hide from our ranching days) but that turkey tail mount is a fantastic accessory. The 4 colors of goblets are just amazing for vignettes, those colors will suit almost anything you want to do. I love everything in the last pic - that teal color is great. I immediately thot if you replace the turkey plate the vignette could go right into Christmas. Lovely color.

The vignette of them, with the Velvet Scarf and the Amber Glasswear is just beautiful. Where did you find that Turkey Fan? Also, I agree the last vignette with the Teal Green is just lovely and arranged so nicely.

I recently (this week) saw a news segment about them.Of course I can’t remember exactly what news outlet. I did find the following which is what the report said. “ The American Academy of Ophthalmology says you don’t need them and has gone on record as not recommending any kind of special eyewear for computer users. The organization says blue light from digital devices does not lead to eye disease and doesn’t even cause eyestrain. I am very careful with mascaras and eyeliners/eye pencils-- I have always been but became vigilant after I had 2 eye surgeries and learned how vulnerable our eyes are to bacteria. I have never worn mascara regularly (leaky and sensitive eyes) but I do use eye pencils and liquid liners. I have blush that is probably 10 yr old.. with the exception of one where the color turned, all seem to be fine. Liquid foundation is well protected and since I wear the same stuff almost all the time, they never last more than a year once opened. Same with lip gloss/lipsticks. They just don't last long enough for me to be concerned. Where I have issues is with skincare products-- I noticed my neutrogena rainbath body oil turned-- the scent makes it obvious. I also noticed a color change in one of my moisturizers. I don't track how long I've had them but I toss them at the first sign that something is "off". It helps that I basically stay with the same products through the years-- I will try new stuff but as the thread detailing in excruciating detail my hunt for my holy grail foundation shows, I am loyal (resistant to change?) to my favorite brands and products!

That has been happening across the board in groceries since the 60's. Bred for size and weight and as quickly as possible. Produce like tomatoes, strawberries, apples. Many shop by price having large families and on a tight budget. I can add pastured chickens to my local farm share that average 3-3.5 pounds. In rotation i have been stocking CooksVenture, usually 3 pounds pastured, and have a Mary's in the freezer. It is just under 4 pounds. Pre covid we would stop at a local farm but he freaked during lock-down. Locked his gate and took down his sign. He has city restaurant accounts so locals were just some bread and butter. Roasted chicken dinners became popular for take-out and delivery so i'm sure he did fine. A few weeks into lock down we ordered 40 pounds of chicken cages for 25$ loaded with meat. A box of meaty beef bones and i think 10 pounds of boneless skinless chicken thighs. Lots of veg. All from a high end restaurant supply. I had to dust off the big lobster/clam pot and simmer outside on a portable burner. Took all day but we had the time, 🙄. Doubt i will ever do that again but it was one of the best master stocks i've ever made. I roasted the chicken cages and bones in batches in the oven and braised the chicken thighs on the stovetop. --Chilled then added chopped later to my soups for the freezer. Fortunately i had a thin freezer at the time. Most of the stocks were pure frozen in pints and 1/2 pints. None of our local farm shares have raised prices at all. They went from 5,000 subscribers to 20,000 in 2020. The farmers are happy. Supporting local keeps us happy with quality grass fed proteins. We just eat smaller portions. That said, and back to the original point of the post, it can be done using grocery chickens with more aromatics and some roasting. My parents have always purchased via price. The cheapest turkey, The grocery roma tomatoes--tasteless. The cheapest ground round for burgers full of water that steam---no sear. Tough chewy steaks on sale. Bacon that is so full of fat it shrinks to nothing once cooked. Higher quality protien/organic veg can be an eqal price point with some research.

My mother had purchased her interment site decades ago - in her hometown, where she hadn't lived for the decades since. She had also picked out a dress to be buried in, and had shown it to me several times in the years before her final illness. She was in a nursing home in my town, 115 miles away, with hospice. The nursing home (or hospice, I don't recall which) arranged for her remains to be picked up by a local mortuary after death was declared. I arranged the funeral with the funeral home in her hometown, that had been used by my family many times. They arranged to have the body transported to them, handled all of the paperwork (including obtaining the death certificate from my county), and placed the obit that I wrote in the local paper. 3 of my 4 siblings, my aunt and her best friend, and 2 of 5 my nieces came to the small service that we had in a parlor of the funeral home. There was no one else who knew or were friends with her (and I had no friends that I had remained in contact with) left in town. My niece's husband (they lived locally) arranged for the chaplain from his work to give a little homily and lead prayer; I found a musician to play 3-4 of her favorite hymns on guitar. Then all we went to the interment at the cemetery. One of my SILs arranged with someone she knew to prepare and serve a casual lunch in a facility at the cemetery for us. BTW, that was the only family member who did anything - the others never even offered - to arrange or help pay for it all. Mom didn't have any insurance benefit or funds left to help pay. ETA: I did all this really out of respect for my elderly aunt - that it pleased my sister and 2 of her daughters was nice but really not a consideration. My brothers wouldn't have minded either way, but I was glad that the oldest drove up from Tennessee - I hadn't seen him in many years, and probably never will again - I was 7 when he left home at the age of 18 and we were never close as adults. At the time it was rather a stretch for my finances. So, I did negotiate with the funeral home about the charges; in fact, I declined their caskets and found a company that sold and delivered lovely caskets in Cincinnati at a much lower cost.

Your displays are all so different, all so wonderful. The teal is very unique and especially lovely. I love the little turkey figurine in the first photo, to the left of the framed print. Its got such soft pretty colors, but all your turkeys are appealing. Till this year, I'd never bought any turkey stuff. Go figure, LOL. I just used autumn colors in all kinds of other things. Then suddenly I went turkey hunting. But no actual figurines, yet. Unless you count several little S&P shakers.

These are so pretty. I really like how you have things arranged. Are the red plates glass? They really caught my eye. Your velvet scarf is very similar to one I have that was my maternal Grandmother's. The fabric and fringe look about the same, except hers is oblong, not square.

Love that you have so many turkey things! The platter was a good find, very pretty and what a great price! Love the teal one too, and how you have it arranged. I never collected any turkey things either until I bought one for our Thanksgiving centerpiece last year. I'm loving everyone's pretty platters--but really have no room for anything that large--so it makes it extra nice to be able to see everyone else's! ;o) Luvs

I'm just loving all of it. I've seen alot of mounts but never a turkey tail and adding antique field glasses.wow Your Victorian velvet scarf is stunning. You have it all figured out. I could go on forever but I'm getting tired and have a few more posts to read. TFS

Thanks girls. Jane, that is a trophy mounted turkey tail, that my DH harvested. You can see the turkey beard sticking out from the ceramic turkey on the left. I hope the turkey mount doesn't offend anyone, DH is the original outdoorsman. I have 5 turkey tails mounted in my garage. Lee, the red plates are indeed glass, the centers have sort of a gold color that is hard to see. I think they may be Fostoria. And I have the long velvet scarf too, that matchs the square one. Thanks for all the sweet comments.

I love all your Thanksgiving details, BUT I really LOVE your wooden dough bowl & that basket it's sitting on! Beautiful! Those are wonderful pieces that could be used in so many different ways!

Every single pic is wonderful, Syble! I love, love, love your antique velvet mantel scarf in that first pic. It seems t have been made especially for Thanksgiving. That turkey tail mount is unusual. I've never seen anything like it, and think it's perfect there on your buffet. The antique field glasses are also an unusual but wonderful touch! I love out-of-the-box ideas like that!
Oh, gosh, I love it all! Your turkey platter is just lovely and so is your turkey plate in that last pic.
You've arranged everything so beautifully, Syble, that I need to go back and tweak my own decs (a LOT!!) before I take any pics of them. I'm so glad you've shared all your pretties with us. They're very inspiring.

I really like the leaves you added to the lampshade. I must remember that idea.

Say, I have that turkey platter. What I'm interested in, is the shelf on which it sits. Very neat display place.

Your lovely displays have me wanting plates/platters with turkeys on them! I never thought of what nice decorations they make for the season. I REALLY LOVE that teal coloured display! Wonderful job!
