Steam vacuum recommendations?

I rent the rug doctor periodically and am always amazed at how dirty the water gets during cleaning. I use it on my hallways and car rugs mostly. Works great.

Cost is about $35 per day including the upholstery tool.

Looking around the web, I find a couple of home models that aren't as expensive as I thought. A Hoover SteamVac goes about $160 and the Bissell ProHeat about $250. Don't see any reports here though.

Amazon reviews say these work well. anyone used them? Do they wear your carpet significantly? And anyone used them on hard floors, like tile?

pet peeve--why do all the vendors call these steam cleaners? there is no steam involved!
